3 August 2026 – Only one election-related incident was reported at Ditshukutshwaneng in Ganyesa village, near Vryburg on Saturday morning, where members of the Public Order Police (POP) were required to use rubber bullets to disperse a crowd attempting to shut down the voter registration station. The crowd allegedly pelted police officers with stones, resulting in damage to one state vehicle.
The North West police spokesperson, Colonel Adele Myburgh said high-visibility policing, intelligence-led operations, Public Order Policing deployments and rapid response capabilities remained in place and continued to address any incidents that may arisen. Myburgh said the Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS) assured community members that all role players were actively involved in ensuring the successful and safe implementation of the second voter registration weekend across the North West.
“The South African Police Service (SAPS), working closely with other government departments represented within PROVJOINTS, remained fully mobilised and continued to support the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in creating a safe and secure environment.
“This enabled community members to exercise their democratic right to register to vote freely and without fear or intimidation. Community members who have applied for identity documents at the Department of Home Affairs were urged to collect their documents, as a valid identity document was required to register and to cast a vote,” she said.
Myburgh further said there were 34 703 identity documents available for collection across the province.
Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Arthur Adams said the police will remain committed to safeguarding the democratic process and ensuring that every eligible voter is able to register in a safe, secure and peaceful environment. Adams commended the cooperation shown by the majority of the communities and urged everyone to respect the rule of law, exercise restraint and resolve any concerns through lawful and peaceful means.
“The South African Police Service (SAPS), together with all PROVJOINTS stakeholders, continued to maintain a visible presence and responded decisively to any acts of intimidation, violence or criminality that threaten the integrity of the voter registration process.

3 August 2026- The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape has officially launched Operation Basadi in the Namakwa District on 1 August 2026, marking the commencement of National Women’s Month under the 2026 theme: “Building Resilient Women for a Resilient South Africa.” The police said the launch commenced with a multi-agency parade in Springbok, attended by the Namakwa District Commissioner, Brigadier Schalk Andrews, the Provincial Head of Proactive Policing, Brigadier Irene Kopeledi and the Provincial Head of Corporate Communication and Liaison, Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien.
The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Colonel Cherelle Ehlers said Operation Basadi recognises the invaluable role of women in law enforcement, while reinforcing SAPS’ commitment to combating crime, protecting vulnerable groups and fostering safer communities through integrated policing. Ehlers said the first phase of the operation consisted of a women-led Vehicle Check Point (VCP) on the N7 between Springbok and Steinkopf.
“Female members from various SAPS provincial components, the Office of the District Commissioner, police stations and specialised units across the Namakwa District joined forces in this high-impact crime prevention initiative.
“The operation was further strengthened through the participation of female officials from the Provincial Traffic Department and Immigration officials from the Department of Home Affairs, demonstrating the effectiveness of a coordinated, multi-disciplinary approach to law enforcement,” she said.
Ehlers further said during the operation, the police stopped and searched 442 vehicles and 1 092 persons. She added that a total of 11 traffic infringement notices amounting to R4700, were issued for various traffic offences, while one suspect was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
“The second phase of the operation focused on high-visibility patrols at shopping centres and within the Springbok Central Business District to enhance public safety, reassure communities and increase police visibility.
“The launch forms part of the build-up to the Women in Law Enforcement Parade, which will be held at McLeod Stadium in Nababeep on 4 August 2026, where women serving across the criminal justice system will be recognised for their dedication, professionalism and service to the people of the Northern Cape,” said Ehlers.
She said throughout August, Operation Basadi will be rolled out across all five districts of the Northern Cape. Ehlers said the initiative highlights the critical role women play in policing, while advancing the Women’s Month theme by celebrating resilient women whose courage, leadership and commitment continue to contribute towards building a safer and more resilient South Africa.
2 August 2026 – Two men aged 40 and 41 were arrested for dealing in drugs. This comes after the police received a tip-off regarding suspected drug trafficking.
The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Colonel Cherelle Ehlers said during the execution of Operation Shanela 2 on 1 August 2026, members from Philipstown SAPS immediately operationalised a tip-off they received regarding suspected drug trafficking. Ehlers said at approximately 5:25pm, the identified silver Opel Corsa was stopped and searched.
“Dagga weighing over 7kg with an estimated value of R72 000 was found and confiscated. Furthermore, the vehicle believed to have been used in the commission of the crime was confiscated. The pair will appear in court in due course for dealing in drugs,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Pixley Ka Seme District Police Commissioner, Major General Nomana Mtukushe, commended the police for their swift response and halting the trade of drugs in the area.

2 August 2026 – As part of the commemoration of Women’s Month, the Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, together with Provincial and District SAPS Management, will lead a Women in Law Enforcement Parade in the Namakwa District. The Northern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Limakatso Koloi, will also grace the occasion including other dignitaries.
The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien said the parade forms part of SAPS’ ongoing efforts to enhance police visibility, strengthen law enforcement readiness, and also showcased the capabilities of the different law enforcement agencies throughout Women’s Month. Gamieldien said these initiatives reaffirm SAPS’ commitment to creating safer communities and ensuring the protection of women, children and other vulnerable groups.
“The parade will be followed by integrated crime prevention operations led by women in law enforcement, with the participation of key government departments and stakeholders. There will be a Women in Law Enforcement Parade during phase 1 at McLeod Stadium, Nababeep on Tuesday at 10am.

2 August 2026 – The police in the Northern Cape continue to intensify the fight against crime through the weekly Operation Shanela II conducted across the province from 27 July to 2 August 2026. The police said the multi-disciplinary high-density operations focused on crime prevention, law enforcement, the tracing of wanted suspects, compliance inspections, road safety and strengthening partnerships with communities.
The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien said the police also maintained a heightened operational presence throughout the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Voter Registration Weekend, ensuring that registration activities at voting stations were conducted in a safe, secure and peaceful environment. Gamieldien said during the week-long operation, the police, supported by various law enforcement agencies and government stakeholders, executed numerous crime prevention actions that yielded significant operational successes.
“A total of 7246 persons, 3526 vehicles and 91 premises were searched, while 403 stop-and-search operations were conducted. The police also executed tracking operations targeting wanted suspects and detective tracing operations.
“Vehicle Check Points (VCPs) and static roadblocks were conducted across the province. Furthermore, 30 unlicensed liquor premises were closed for non-compliance. Compliance inspections formed an integral part of the operation,” she said.
Gamieldien further said the police inspected licensed liquor premises, second-hand dealers, scrapyards and recyclers, formal and informal businesses. She added that the coordinated operations resulted in the arrest of 270 suspects for various offences.
“In addition to law enforcement operations, SAPS members continued to strengthen relationships with communities through crime prevention awareness campaigns, school safety initiatives, victim support programmes, engagements with Community Police Forums (CPFs), neighbourhood watches, youth structures and other community stakeholders.
“These engagements focused on encouraging community participation in the fight against crime and promoting safer communities throughout the province,” said Gamieldien.
Meanwhile, the Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, commended all members and partner departments for their unwavering commitment and professionalism and cited that Operation Shanela II remains a key crime-fighting initiative that demonstrates their determination to reduce crime, remove criminals from their communities and improve the safety of all residents. Otola also extended her appreciation to the communities of the Northern Cape for their continued support and cooperation, particularly during the peaceful voter registration weekend.
“The SAPS remains committed to protecting all communities, enforcing the law without fear or favour and ensuring that every resident enjoys a safe and secure environment,” she said.

2 August 2026 – The Democratic Alliance (DA) said on 4 August 2026, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie and his department, will account to Parliament on its FIFA World Cup 2026 delegation and related expenses. The DA alleges that, as McKeinzie and his department failed to provide proper, accountable responses to questions about the spending extravaganza, they have requested that Minister and his department come prepared for tough questions and avoid the lack of transparency.
DA Member of Parliament (MP) and spokesperson on Sport, Arts and Culture, Leah Potgieter said the DA has pre-emptively written to the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture, demanding that the Minister and the Department prepare and present the full names, relevant qualifications and experience of each of the 151 delegation members that warranted their inclusion. Potgieter said this includes the specific role and responsibilities of each of the 151 delegation members.
She further said McKenzie should provide a clear account of what each of the 151 delegation members did during the World Cup. Potgieter added that they also need a detailed account of the meetings and engagements held by the Minister and each of the 151 delegation members.
“A detailed breakdown of the estimated R31 million expenditures, including the cost attributable to each of the 151 delegation members. A detailed breakdown of all sponsorships received and a detailed account of the return on investment achieved from the estimated R31 million expenditures, including the measurable benefits secured for South African sport, arts, culture, tourism, or related industries.
“The DA will hold McKenzie to account for each rand spent at the World Cup,” she said.
However, McKenzie said over the past week, questions have been raised in Parliament and in the media about spending connected to South Africa’s engagement with the FIFA World Cup 2026, most of it centred on a figure of approximately R31 million, which is an amount that was openly disclosed in a parliamentary reply, where there was nothing to hide.
“Official trips and travel-related expenditure of the Minister and two support staff, Director-General, and Project Team (14 members) amount to R7 865 134.97, South Africa 2010 Legends Exhibition Match (involving 27 people in total) equal to R6 706 925.00.
“The suites expenditure equal to R3 361 845.18, spectator match tickets amount to R3 011 465.00 and programme activities linked to fan engagement, Aldea Global participation, Atlanta partnership activations, monterrey and legacy activities (including the costs of 30 artists and cultural participants, and the project delivery
team from a service provider) equals to R10 000 000.00. The total is R30 945 370.15,” he said.
McKenzie said spending a budget is not a scandal. He said spending a departmental budget on the department’s mandate is not, in itself, a wrongdoing.
“The FIFA World Cup was the single largest global sport, arts and culture platform of the year and it comes only every four years. Spending public money to position South Africa on such a platform is not a deviation from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) mandate – it is exactly the DSAC mandate.
“If any person believes money was improperly allocated, appropriated, or spent, or that I personally benefited in a corrupt manner, I invite them to bring that evidence forward to Parliament, the Auditor-General, or to any law enforcement body with the power to investigate it,” said McKenzie.
1 August 2026- Two men from Kakamas were sentenced to five years imprisonment by the Upington Regional Court for rape. The duo raped a woman (32) in Keimoes.
The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Litabe said on 5 April 2025, Howard Mentoor (31) and Edwin Oortman (29), unlawfully entered the residence of the victim’s uncle at approximately 6am, while the occupants were asleep. Litabe said the accused threatened the victim’s uncle with a knife, searched him and demanded money.
“During the incident, the victim attempted to leave the house, but was prevented from doing so. The two men then sexually assaulted her before fleeing the scene.
“The matter was immediately reported to the police and a rape case was registered for investigation. Detective Constable Claudine Esau of the Kakamas Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit conducted a thorough investigation that resulted in the swift arrest of both accused” he said.
Litabe further said Mentoor and Oortman were remanded in custody throughout the court proceedings until their conviction and sentencing. He added that, they were also sentenced to the additional five-year imprisonment each.
“The court declared both offenders unfit to possess firearms,” he said.
Meanwhile, the ZF Mgcawu District Police Commissioner, Major General Monica Sebili, commended Detective Constable Claudine Esau for her professionalism, commitment and diligent investigation, which culminated in the successful prosecution of the perpetrators. Sebolai said the SAPS remains steadfast in its commitment to investigating crimes of gender-based violence (GBV) and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice, while providing continued support to victims of these heinous offences.
