A woman raped after hitchhiking

5 August 2026 – The Hopetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit is appealing to the community for assistance in tracing three unidentified men who may be able to assist with an investigation into the alleged rape of a woman (19). The police said the incident reportedly occurred on 30 June 2026, at approximately 3pm on the R385 gravel road between Hopetown and Belmont.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Litabe said it is believed that the victim was travelling from Hopetown to Douglas when she accepted a lift from three unknown men. Litabe said during the journey, the driver allegedly stopped the vehicle and informed the victim that they had experienced mechanical problems.

“The three men exited the vehicle, leaving the victim inside. One of the men subsequently returned to the vehicle and allegedly raped the victim. Thereafter, a second man also entered the vehicle and allegedly raped her, while the remaining man stood outside.

“Following the incident, the suspects allegedly abandoned the victim at the scene before driving away. She reported the matter to Belmont SAPS, where a rape case was registered,” he said.

Litabe further said anyone who may be able to identify the three men depicted in the attached identikits is urged to contact Detective Constable Lutsha Sweli on 065 806 8100, Hopetown FCS Commander Captain Aretha Classen on 082 328 9467 or Hopetown SAPS on 053 203 7200. He added that, alternatively, information can be reported to the nearest police station, the SAPS Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or anonymously via the MySAPS App.

Police in Northern Cape welcomes convictions in GBVF related cases

7 August 2025 – The Hopetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit said it has successfully secured convictions in cases related to Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). The unit said in the first case which occurred on 24 February 2025, Lorenzo Kani (27) assaulted and attempted to stab his girlfriend (25) in the presence of his sister (47) in Hopetown.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock said the sister immediately reported the matter to the police. Kock said the accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years imprisonment for contravening a protection order and assault common.

“He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. In a separate incident on 13 May 2025, Beronique Olyn (23) displayed riotous and aggressive behaviour towards her parents and child in Hopetown.

“She was arrested for contravening a protection order and appeared in the Hopetown Magistrate’s Court. Olyn was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years. She was declared unfit to possess a firearm,” he said.

Kock further said the SAPS Management has commended Detective Warrant Officer Paul Schoeman and Sergeant Frans Louw, for their commitment and thorough investigation, which, together with the collaboration of state prosecutor advocate Nicola van Niekerk, led to the successful prosecution and sentencing of the accused. He added that their efforts underscore SAPS’ unwavering dedication to combating GBVF and ensuring justice for victims.
