9 September 2026 – A man (26) sentenced to five years imprisonment by the Pofadder Regional Court for sexual assault. The accused sexually assaulted a girl (17) in Pella on 23 March 2025.
The Namakwa District Police spokesperson, Captain Ivan Magerman said the incident occurred approximately at 5pm. Magerman said the matter was reported to Pella SAPS and subsequently transferred to the Pofadder Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for further investigation.
“The investigation was conducted by Constable Julie-Ann Jaars, who diligently followed up on all available leads, resulting in the suspect being traced and arrested. On 7 September 2026, the Pofadder Regional Court found the accused guilty of Sexual Assault in terms of Section 5(1) of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, 2007 (Act 32 of 2007).
“The court sentenced the accused to five years imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during the period of suspension. The court further declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm, ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders, and declared him unfit to work with children,” he said.
Meanwhile, the acting Namakwa District Police Commissioner, Colonel Moses Lekgwati, congratulated Constable Jaars for her meticulous investigation and dedication in ensuring that the matter was successfully brought before court. Lekgwati said this conviction is testament to the dedication and commitment of the detectives, particularly young investigators, who work tirelessly to ensure that victims of sexual offences receive justice.
