More than 400 suspects were arrested for various crimes during a concerted effort of the multi-disciplinary forces executed from 18-25 February 2024. The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Col Sergio Kock said, actions were executed in all five districts in the province. Kock said the aim of Operation Shanela, was to address priority crimes in hotspot areas. He further said these disruptive actions and activities included Vehicle Control Points (VCPs), stop and searches.

“This includes conducting roadblocks, tracing of wanted suspects, foot and vehicle patrols, foot patrols in malls and shopping complexes, compliance inspections, and visits to farms and mines. During these operations, 265 suspects were arrested for an array of crimes, including illegal possession of explosives.

“This includes the illegal possession of a firearm, possession of a suspected stolen vehicle, illicit mining, murder, rape, illegal dealing in liquor, dealing in drugs, undocumented persons, assaults, malicious damage to property, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” said Kock.

He added that, during tracing operations, detectives arrested 159 daily wanted suspects for business robberies, murder, rape, and assault with the intent to cause Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) and illegal firearms and ammunition. Kock said a total of 123 Vehicle Control Points (VCPs) and 29 roadblocks were conducted across the province.

“More than 360 premises were searched, 9986 vehicles and 17 071 persons were stopped and searched. Compliance inspections were also executed at second-hand dealers and liquor premises.

“During the operations, the police confiscated firearms, cell phones, dangerous weapons, thousands of litres of alcoholic beverages, drugs including mandrax, tik, dagga, explosives, and cash believed to be the proceeds of crime,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General, Koliswa Otola, assured the public that operations will continue unabatedly and with no fear or favour. Otola said a zero-tolerance approach will be adopted towards the abuse of alcohol and drugs and crimes committed against women and children.

“We would like to make a special call to communities to rate the police efforts by participating in the RATE OUR SERVICE, which is an online survey to assist the police in improving service delivery.

A man nabbed for illegal possession of drugs

A man (30) has been arrested for allegedly being in illegal possession of drugs. He was arrested by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, assisted by the Kuruman K9 unit on 27 February 2024. The Hawks spokesperson in Northern Cape, Warrant Officer Nomthandazo Mnisi said the police received a tip-off regarding drugs being sold at Haakbos Draai, Postmasburg. Mnisi further said the police conducted a search and seizure operation at the said address.

“During the search, a black plastic bag containing crystal methamphetamine with an estimated street value of R38 090, was confiscated.

“Other items seized include a silver scale, a Samsung mobile phone, and a blue style phone. He is expected to briefly appear before the Postmasburg District’s Court on 28 February 2024,” she added.

The police have confiscated illicit cigarettes to the value of R882 124 000 during a joint operation conducted by the ZF Mgcawu District Task Team, Upington Border Police, Public Order Police, and K9 Unit in collaboration with the South African Revenue Service Customs in Upington on 27 February 2024.

The ZF Mgcawu District Police spokesperson, Sgt Omphile Masegela said the police visited three premises, searching for illegal imported products. Masegela said the police would continue with disruptive actions to reduce the space for illegal activities in the district.

Three police officers nabbed for corruption

Three police officers aged 39, 44 and 48 were arrested for corruption in Hebron on 26 February 2024. This comes after they have allegedly demanded R6000 from a complainant in order not to arrest him.

The Hawks spokesperson in North West, Lieutenant Colonel Tinyiko Mathebula said the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation members, arrested three police detectives for alleged corruption. Mathebula said the suspects were arrested at a mall in Hebron.

“The reports indicate that, the trio solicited gratification from the complainant in order not to arrest him. They allegedly demanded R6000 and the complainant was able to pay them R2000.

“The suspects reportedly contacted the complainant, demanding the outstanding amount. After the matter was brought to the Hawks’ attention, an entrapment was set and the three police officers were caught soon after receiving R4000 from the complainant,” he said.

Mathebula further said the suspects were with corruption and will appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on 27 February 2024.

Banyana Banyana are eyeing a satisfying conclusion to their Third Round CAF Women’s Olympic qualifier against Tanzania when the two sides meet at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday, 27 February 2024. 

The Sasol-sponsored South African senior women’s team won the first leg of this tie 3-0 in Tanzania a few days ago and will come into the return match high in confidence after the comfortable away victory in the East African country. The match will also serve as a special tribute to Jermaine Seoposenwe, who will become the 10th Banyana Banyana player to get 100 international caps.

Coach Desiree Ellis spoke highly of a player who has always delivered her absolute best and has an incredible work ethic.

“I am really excited for Jermaine, she has been a true servant for South African football. She has been giving her all, always. She is the 10th player in Banyana Banyana to get 100 caps and it is well deserved,” said Ellis. 

Should Banyana Banyana make it to the Fourth Round of the Olympic qualifiers, they will face Nigeria, who won against Cameroon in their Third Round match. Only two African nations will qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. 

Speaking about the possibilities in the next round, Ellis emphasised that the focus was on winning their two-legged game against Tanzania first and then preparing for their next opponent. 

“Look, it is always about us first. We have to finish the job back home. We don’t want to become complacent. People would say 3-0 is already a score that wins you the tie but the next goal in the match could change things. We have to score that next goal and once that is over we will have to face whoever is in front of us.” 

Banyana Banyana had their final training session on Monday afternoon.

The second leg game will kick off at 19:30 at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga and will be LIVE on SuperSport Variety 4.

Maloyi: “North West has expressed unprecedented levels of development”

The acting North West Premier, Nono Maloyi said the province has experienced unprecedented levels of development in the last 30 years, with the number of households increasing from 591 145 in 1996 to over 1.14 million in 2022. When delivering the State of the Province Address (SOPA), Maloyi revealed that, this depicts an upward trend of 88% of formal housing in the province.

He further said since 2019, the provincial government has built over 19 000 houses. Maloyi added that, in 2023 alone, over 2700 were handed over to beneficiaries.

“The focus will now be centered on eradicating mud houses. R198 million has been allocated to eradicate 1 356 mud houses in the province, with 579 of these units already delivered.

“Furthermore, efforts to eradicate mud houses have been strengthened by the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the provincial government and the Chinese National Import and Export Corporation to build gas to electricity power stations in the province,” he said.

Maloyi said as part of their project investment, the Chinese have made a commitment to invest further resources to assist eradicate mud houses in the province by building 500 houses every year, for the duration of the project. He said the project is expected to create a minimum of over 10 000 jobs.

“Providing an update on the Deelpan Floods intervention programme, The provincial government has cleared all the hurdles that delayed the project and that 104 houses will be completed by end of March 2024.

“A further 317 houses will be built following the donation of land by Kgosi Kogodi Molete of Bakolobeng and his Traditional Council. In addition, the provincial government will be launching the R2.6 billion N14 mixed development project in Ventersdorp,” he said.

He said the development will see installation of bulk services for 4000 sites and create over 600 jobs for local people through the construction of Breaking New Ground, Social Housing and bonded stock. Maloyi said this is part of ongoing efforts by the provincial government to change the lives of the residents of North West and restore their dignity.

“The provincial government will continue to ramp up the title deeds restoration programme by handing over title deeds to rightful owners. To date 6 283 title deeds have been handed over to beneficiaries across the province,” he said.
