13 October 2026 – An accused, Sivuyile Mntuyedwa (23), has been sentenced to a combined 25 years imprisonment for murder and attempted murder following a stabbing incident in Kuyasa village in September 2025.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Nomthandazo Mnisi said the Colesberg Regional Court sentenced Mntuyedwa on 7 October 2026 to 15 years imprisonment for murder and 10 years for attempted murder. Mnisi said he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

According to Mnisi, the incident occurred on 6 September 2025, when Mntuyedwa became involved in an altercation with the son of Sarah Tina (49). She said during the confrontation, Mntuyedwa allegedly drew a knife and approached the son.

“Tina intervened in an attempt to defuse the situation, but was stabbed in the upper body. Mntuyedwa later followed Patrick Vuyo Louw (27), who had stopped to assist the injured woman and stabbed him in the chest.

“Louw died at the scene and Mntuyedwa was subsequently arrested. The successful prosecution followed an investigation by Detective Sergeant ZG Phololo of the Kuyasa Detectives,” said Mnisi.

The acting Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga welcomed the sentence and commended the investigating officer and prosecution team for their dedication and professionalism. Ngubelanga said the South African Police Service (SAPS) remained committed to ensuring that perpetrators of violent crime were held accountable for their actions.
