16 March 2025 – A collective group consisting of members of Frances Baard District Illicit Mining Task Team followed up on intelligence information regarding the alleged sale of drugs at a premises in John Daka Phase One, Galeshewe Township, near Kimberley on 14 March 2026. The police operationalised the information and the identified location was raided.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Molefi Shemane said during the search and seizure actions, a significant amount of dagga with an estimated value of R136 491 was seized. Shemane said the suspect (37) was arrested for possession of dagga and is expected to appear in court soon.

Suspected stolen compressor seized, two suspects at large

15 February 2026- The vigilance and swift action of an off-duty police officer led to the recovery of a suspected stolen compressor at a local mechanic in Galeshewe Township, near Kimberley. On Saturday at approximately 4:40pm, the off-duty police officer was at a mechanic workshop in John Daka, Galeshewe Township, where he had taken his vehicle for repairs.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Colonel Cherelle Ehlers said during his visit, he observed four suspects entering the premises and attempting to sell a suspected stolen compressor to the mechanic. Ehlers said the police officer tactically approached the suspects by feigning interest in purchasing the item, enabling him to safely seize the compressor.

“Upon becoming suspicious, the suspects fled the scene. The police have since opened a case of possession of suspected stolen property for further investigation.

“Anyone with information that could assist in the identification and arrest of the suspects is urged to contact the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or provide information via the MySAPS App,” she said.

Ehlers further said information received will be treated with strict confidentiality.

‘A body of a woman discovered in a pool of blood’

13 October 2025 – A body of a woman (44) was found in a pool of blood by the police in Galeshewe Township, near Kimberley. The police said the body of Mmasabata Anastacia Monareng was found lying in a pool of blood at Patosi Street, Galeshewe Township, near Kimberley on 8 November 2022.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Timothy Sam said Monareng was found with extensive injuries on her body that resulted in her being transported to the Robert Mangaliso Hospital for medical attention, where she succumbed to her injuries. Sam said the police request the assistance of the public in solving this case and request anyone with information to contact the Galeshewe SAPS or contact Detective Sergeant Chrisna von Wielliegh at 082 469 0547 or the SAPS Crime Stop line 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS App.

A man sentenced to six years for stabbing a minor

4 August 2025- A man (26) was sentenced to six years imprisonment by the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court for assault with intent to cause Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH). On 26 March 2023, at approximately 7am, the accused, Ronald Steenkamp was seen urinating against the fence of a residence on Kgatlane Street in Chris Hani Park, Galeshewe Township, near Kimberley.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Molefi Shemane said a victim (15), who was at home at the time, reprimanded Steenkamp for his behaviour. Shemane said later that evening at approximately 8pm, the accused encountered the victim in the street and stabbed him behind the ear with an okapi knife.

“The victim, accompanied by his parents, reported the incident to the police and the accused was subsequently arrested. The case docket was transferred to the Galeshewe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for further investigation. The Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court finalised the matter and sentenced Steenkamp to six years imprisonment for assault with intent to cause Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH).

“The police in Northern Cape remain steadfast in their commitment to combating crimes against women and children. The SAPS Management commends Detective Warrant Officer Lesego Oliphant of the Galeshewe FCS Unit for his thorough investigation and for helping bring closure to the victim and his family,” he said.
