N12 Potchefstroom accident leaves one dead – five injured


Potchefstroom- One man tragically died while fife others were injured in a roll – over accident on the N12 about twelve kilometers out of Potchefstroom this morning at around 10h30.

Although the cause of the accident is still speculative, reports from the scene indicate that the vehicle veered off the road and overturned several times.

“Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and after triaging found that one man had tragically died due to the extensive injuries that he sustained, five others were in a serious condition” Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

After medics treated the injured at the scene, they transported them to a local hospital for the care that they required.

Western area accident leaves two dead one injured

A farther and child tragically died while the mother was in a serious condition after their vehicle overturned along Lombard Road in Western Area this morning . A report from the scene indicates that the vehicle overturned at around 03h00 but was only spotted in the veld by a passing security vehicle just before 07h0 0n this morning.

“Netcare 911 paramedics and the Western Area fire services arrived at the scene and found that the  crumpled remains of the vehicle had come to rest in the veldt about 100 meters from the roadway” Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

The three occupants Mother , Farther and a girl about seven  had been ejected from the wreckage as it tumbled through the veldt.

After triaging, the medics found that the patient must have been lying in the grass for some time as their clothes were covered in frost. Tragically, the farther and his daughter died before our arrival due to the extensive injuries that they sustained. The mother was in a serious condition and was transported to hospital under the constant care of an  provincial services paramedic for the critical intervention that she required.

Magaliesburg accident leaves six injured

Six people were injured after two vehicles collided along the R24 in Magaliesburg  this morning. Reports from the scene indicate that the security vehicle was rear ended by another vehicle.

Exact detail to the cause however will remain a subject for police comment.

“Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and found the patients at the side of the roadway, two sustained serious injuries while four escaped with minor injuries. After medics stabilised the injured at the scene they transported them to a nearby hospital for the care that they required” Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

High-profile attorney to represent new suspect in slain teacher’s case

Port Elizabeth – Prominent defence attorney Alwyn Griebenow has confirmed that he will be representing the second suspect accused of being involved in the murder of Jayde Panayiotou.

Earlier on Thursday, provincial police spokesperson Marinda Mills announced that two men had been arrested and that detectives had ruled out robbery as the motive.

Assisted suicide ruling could result in law change

Johannesburg – If the State’s appeal against the High Court in Pretoria’s ruling allowing a terminally ill cancer patient to commit suicide with a doctor’s help fails, Parliament will have to change legislation to accommodate this, an advocate said on Thursday.

If the Supreme Court of Appeal says the ruling by Judge Hans Fabricius can stand, it could go to the Constitutional Court, said Advocate Elton Hart, of the University of Johannesburg’s Law Clinic.

Gunmen pounce on phone shop

Kimberley – The staff and a customer at the Cell C store at the New Park Shopping Centre in Kimberley were held up at gunpoint by three men, who ransacked the safe after locking them inside it, on Tuesday morning at about 9.45am.

While the store management is still calculating the losses incurred, it is believed that cellphone handsets to the value of about R350 000 were stolen. These included cellphones that had been brought in for repairs.

No jail for man in child sex assault case

Kimberley – A 28-year-old Herlear man, who was found guilty of sexually assaulting his stepbrother’s seven-year-old daughter, escaped a prison sentence on Wednesday when he was given a three-year jail term, suspended for five years.

The incident happened in February 2013 at the home of the child’s grandparents, where the accused had an outside room.

Magistrate Jesse Clarke said on Wednesday that when considering an appropriate sentence, he needed to take into account the personal circumstances of the accused, the offence committed and the interests of society.

Kimberley pastors survive Nepal quake

Kimberley – Two Kimberley pastors narrowly escaped the devastating effects of Saturday’s earthquake in Nepal, which caused extensive damage and triggered huge avalanches on Mount Everest.

Pastors André Venter, 56, and Harry Hurndall, 55, of the City of Hope Church in Kimberley, were on a climb to Mount Everest’s base camp as part of a fundraising effort for a local children’s home, Christina Kiddie Children’s Home.

Prosecutor in dock for corruption

Johannesburg – A prosecutor in Galeshewe in the Northern Cape appeared in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of corruption.

“It is alleged that the prosecutor Anele Kohlani asked for R1 500 in order to withdraw a case of assault against a complainant. The complainant reported this to Hawks,” said spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

Kohlani, 32, was arrested earlier on Wednesday. He was granted a R1 000 bail, Mulaudzi said.

He is expected back in court on May 22.

82-year-old man and his dog killed

Kimberley – An 82-year-old man was hacked to death at his home in Longlands, while his dog was found lying dead next to his body during the early hours of on Wednesday morning.

It is believed that the eight-week-old puppy was kicked and stomped to death, while eyewitnesses stated that the deceased’s throat was slit.

The deceased, Leonard Sibiya, had been living alone in a lorry bin behind some unused mining dumps for a number of years, following the death of his wife.

No one has been arrested for the murder yet.
