30 October 2026 – The embattled Konka Tavern operating in Taung CBD has been shut down due to non-compliance. This comes after a multi-stakeholder inspection by municipal officials, environmental health practitioners and South African Police Service (SAPS), for allegedly trading without a valid liquor licence or permit.

It is alleged that the North West Liquor Board (NWLB), conducted a compliance monitoring operation in Taung as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure liquor establishments comply with the law and their licence conditions.

According to allegations, inspectors uncovered several cases of non-compliance.

The Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Tryphosa van Rooyen said: “Yes, it is true that we have shut down the Konka Tavern in Taung. This comes after we conducted a compliance inspection on 28 October 2026. It was found that the business was not in compliance with the North West Liquor Act.

“We are heading towards the festive season. So, intensified compliance operations will be conducted and thorough scrutinization of operating licences by designated liquor officers in collaboration with liquor board inspectors will take place.”
