The swearing-in of new mayor and councillors took place at various municipalities across North West province on Tuesday. 

Mamusa local municipality held its council inauguration today. 

Aaron Motswana was introduced as a new mayor alongside new councillors from different political parties. 

The new council was formed to enable the first council meeting to take place. 

Other council meetings of local municipalities in Dr Ruth Semogotsi Mompati District were ongoing. 

District councils will be formed on Friday.

A 27-YEAR-Old man was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by Fraseburg Magistrate Court for murder of his girlfriend on Wednesday.

Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Col Dimakatso Mooi said the atrocity took place back in September, 2015. Mooi further said the body of a 20 year-old woman; Jerinica Jacobs was found lying in the veld just outside Fraseburg.

“The suspect was arrested a day after the body was discovered. According to the information received, the victim was murdered on September 5, 2015. The suspect; Adam Lukas, 27 beat the victim to death and left her to in the veld.

“It was through a meticulous investigation conducted by warrant officer Fiks of Fraseburg Detectives and proper gathering of forensic evidence that led to a successful conviction,” Mooi said.

Lukas was convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by Fraseburg Regional Court.

Modiba is a 2015 graduate of the Ke Yona Team Search that produced the likes of Luthando Sixhaso who is with former Nedbank Cup champions, Kaizer Chiefs.

The 22-year-old youngster has grown tremendously since graduating from South Africa’s leading talent search initiative headed by Shakes Mashaba, Owen Da Gama, Khabo Zondo and Mike Mangena. Even though the U23 National Team was knocked out of the Olympics, Modiba believes the experience gained from such a tournament will take him even further and alludes the success he is enjoying to the Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search.

“I am enjoying a successful football career because I have been through the hands of the best coaches in this country. Through the Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search, I had the unique opportunity of being trained by Owen Da Gama and Shakes Mashaba. From then on, I worked with one of the best tacticians, Muhsin Ertugral who has molded me to be the player that I am today. All of this would not have happened had I not partnered with Nedbank to make my football dreams happen,” said Modiba.

RUSTENBURG local municipality will address high level of noise. The municipality spokesperson, Thapelo Matebesi said they have received numerous noise pollution complaints from some of residents.

“We have received complaints from some of residents about the high levels of noise, particularly over weekends. The Municipality’s Public Safety Directorate in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Bojanala Platinum District Municipality will address that matter.

“We will deal with that nuisance. We embarked on specific site visits last week to measure noise levels. The outcome of the site visits are that the noise levels were found to be below 85 decibels ironically. We used the scientific terminology to describe that,” Matebesi said.

He said a specific scientific instrument was used by Environmental Health Practitioners to measure the noise levels in specific identified places. Matebesi said places identified were taverns and night clubs in particular.

“The noise levels were found to be satisfactory below 85 decibels in terms of the prescribed Municipal By-Law. This is an ongoing project by the municipality and its partners to deal with this nuisance. Our next target will be the Olympia Park stadium during any event hosted there.

“We also appeal to our entertainment businesspersons to adhere to the Municipal By-Law by lowering their music levels. We are henceforth going to affix a specific clause on permits when we issue them reminding music concerts hosts and other functions to lower their noise levels. Failure to comply with the prescript of this specific By-Law will result in heavy spot penalties or fines not less than R500,” he said.

MEC for education and sport department lauded Are-Fadimeheng Secondary School from Jouberton Township in Klerksdorp after winning COPA Coca-Cola® champions in North West.

The school won the provincial finals tournament hosted by Coca-Cola, in conjunction with the South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) held at Montshiwa Stadium on Saturday.

Are-Fadimeng Secondary School has beaten Rustenburg Educational College in the final.

“Sport continues to be remarkable tool to unite our people. We want to applaud the school for winning the provincial Coca Cola cup. Tournament like these augurs well for our sport development. The province has produced many soccer stars. North West province is where stars are born,” Lehari said.

A teacher from the school, Veronica Maseko said COPA Coca-Cola® is a global football development initiative that gives millions of young football fans the opportunity to come together and celebrate their passion for football.

“As part and parcel of this initiative, the Which Part Will You Play search is once again on. The organisation is looking out for exceptional young players to join the Which Part Will You Play all-star team. Players embodying and representing the dynamic and unique roles needed to make up a successful team will be selected for the side and act as personifications of the values COPA Coca-Cola® aims to instill in its young participants,” Maseko said.

Maseko was also named as the mentor in North West. She was selected in recognition of being an individual who has been through thick and thin with the school where she teaches.

“It feels good to be given recognition, especially during women’s month. I will continue to take care of my pupils and the community at large,” she said.

The player from Tshwaraganelo Primary School, Oarabile Moshweu was selected to join the Which Part Will You Play all-stars team. He was identified after producing great performance at one of the games.

A hard-tackling defender said: “Thank you to Coca-Cola for this tournament. We are given a platform to reach our dreams. I am happy that I will be able to represent my school at the National Finals.”

In addition to the Which Part Will You Play all-stars, COPA Coca-Cola® will be picking one individual in each province that has shown the part they are playing in the development of young footballers. Each of these individuals will be recognized with the title of ‘the Mentor’ and rewarded by Coca-Cola for the contribution they are making to the development of South Africa’s youth.

THE labour department has vowed to deal harshly with companies that continue to contravene labour laws and regulations across North West. The department has added more contravention notices on the list of a Zeerust chicken-farm employer.

Labour department provincial spokesperson, Orpa Mathabe said the employer was previously given 14 working days to comply with labour laws.

“The owner did not register his employees with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). They were also working without being issued with a pay slips. The employer also hit with more contravention notices because he failed to observe health and safety rules as stipulated by the Act,” Mathabe said.

Labour department inspector, Seswai Nchabeleng said: “Another visit had to be done to ascertain that the employer adheres to Occupational Health and Safety Act so that the workplace does not pose danger to the health and safety of workers.

“We indicated that the employer failed to keep the incident and personal protective equipment registers as required by the law and that there was no risk assessment conducted. The General Safety Regulation 2 (1) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1993 requires that an employer indicates the risks associated with the type of business he does.”

Nchabeleng added that the risk register must show the severity of the risks as well as the measures that the employer was taking to control the situation.

“The employer is given 60 days to comply as per the contravention notices given to him. What employers need to know is that the Labour department inspectors are available to give them guidelines and advices so as to assist them to be compliant as their failure to comply after 60 days may be deemed to be disregarding the labour laws,” he said.

A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD pupil was killed near Ferncrest Hospital in Tlhabane on Monday morning. North West police spokesperson, Sgt Kelebogile Moleko said the pupil was walking to school with her guardian when she was allegedly knocked down by a vehicle.

“We can confirm the incident and we have opened a culpable homicide case. The pupil was allegedly trying to cross the road on her way to school. She was knocked down by a car and succumbed to her injuries,” Moleko.

She said the deceased was certified dead by the emergency medical services (EMS).

FRONTLINE staff were taken through their pace in a two-day workshop on customer services. Receptionists, customer and guest relations officers from various tourism enterprises in North West province embarked on a mentorship programme.

MEC for tourism, Desbo Mohono said a workshop on customer service is a way of improving service excellence within the tourism industry. The event was held at Bakgatla Lodge near Moruleng village.

“Tourism product owners should give tourists a world class treatment. The treat must ensure that the clients come back for more to experience the wonders provided by the entire province.

“We must also practice and offer excellent services to our guests. In that way, we will be making sure that we contribute positively to the growth of tourism in the province,” Mohono said.

Golden Leopard Resorts owns several tourism establishments across North West. The entity also sent their delegates to attend the workshop.

One of 42 delegates, Thoriso Morake, 26, works as a receptionist at Bakgatlha Gate Resorts in Pilanesburg. Morake said she was passionate about her work. “I have been working as a receptionist for three years. I learnt a lot about good customer services. The workshop will be handy in sharpening my skills and furthermore improve my acumen in dealing with customers in daily basis.

“We are living in an ever-changing world. One meets different characters on daily basis. I have even matured with time and I am now able to conduct myself so well,” Morake said.

MORE than 200 women law enforcement officers held a joint operation along R565 road between Rustenburg and Sun City recently. North West community safety and transport management department spokesperson, Thabo Sematle said the operation was part of Women’s Month celebration.

“More than 236 cars were stopped and eight illegal immigrants were arrested. They failed to produce proper and legal documentation. Seventeen traffic offenses were also issued to non-compliant motorists.

“Defaulting motorists have no choice, but to adhere to road rules throughout this month and beyond. We will continue to hold law enforcement special operations from time to time,” Sematle said.

He added that defaulting motorists will be punished by women law enforcement officers throughout this month. Sematle further said they will not allow any un-roadworthy vehicle to use the roads.

“They will not allow any drunken driver nor overloading and usage of cell phone while driving. We also urge our road users to cooperate and share the road without any rage.

“Our road users must not undermine these women, they must cooperate with them. They are doing their job which is to ensure compliance on our roads. Law enforcement officers are also committed to stamp their authority on our provincial roads without fear or favour,” Sematle said.

He added that female traffic officers will treat motorists with respect, humility and smile at you. Sematle said they will also show motherly love, but still summon or warn motorists sternly.

NORTH West premier Supra Mahumapelo’s wife visited Zambia to interact with women. Kule Mahumapelo said her visit at impoverished village of Sebitwane in
Sesheke district, Zambia was encouraging.

“I interacted with women those who make a living out of small-scale farming. The primary aim of the visit was a fact-finding mission on how small-scale farming has assisted the rural women of Lozi clan. They managed to pull themselves out of abject poverty through farming.

“We are in a process of getting South African women – particularly of Bokone Bophirima to work with their fellow women in Sebitwane to empower each other. Through this initiative, Sebitwane women will share their model of making agriculture work to create jobs and fight poverty,” Mahumapelo said.

She added that Bokone Bophirima women will exchange life and business skills including women empowerment in general.

“Their agricultural model is not complicated. Anyone can succeed through
it, whether they are skilled or not, as long as they have mentor to
oversee their work,” Mahumapelo said.

She further said there was a need to contribute after the Fifth Administration of Bokone Bophirima Provincial Government adopted five concretes that drive the Rebranding, Repositioning and Renewal of the province.

Mahumapelo added that she selected two out of the Five Concretes to focus on.

“I chose Agriculture, Culture and Tourism (ACT) and VTSD (Villages, Townships and Small Dorpies). I believe in active citizenry and civil society working together with government to steer development in the right direction.

“I have also teamed up on this mission with the businesswoman and the founder of Bokamoso Impact Investments, Lesego Serolong. She shares the same vision and embarked in agriculture for social and economic change. The partnership has already led to an agricultural project in Taung,” Mahumapelo said.

Women and youth of Taung will be trained, mentored and helped to run the agricultural project. They will eventually be linked with the appropriate market
where they can sell their produce.
