KIMBERLEY- The Cassandra Neighbourhood watch in Kimberley arrested two men who were found in possession of a stolen motor cycle.

The neighbourhood watch members  spotted a suspicious looking vehicle in the Cassandra area on Tuesday at around 22:00.

Northern Cape police spokesperson, lieutenant Sergio Kock said the neighbourhood members allegedly spotted and its lights were off. They followed the vehicle  into town and managed to pull them off the road on the corner of Quinn and Phakamile Mabija Road.

“It is alleged that two of the four suspects jumped out of the vehicle and fled the scene. Two men were found inside the vehicle. The Kombi had no seats and a stolen Black Big Boy CC250 scooter was found inside,” Kock said.

Kimberley Flying Squad police arrived at the scene and assisted the neighbourhood watch team.

“The suspects were handed over to the police and the kombi together with the scooter was confiscated. It is alleged that the scooter was stolen in Belgravia earlier this month. The suspects are aged 28 and 30 years old respectively and they will appear in the Kimberley Magistrates’ Court soon,” he said.

Kock said there has been a notable increase in theft of motor cycles in the Kimberley area.

“Areas of concern include, Rolydene, Carter’s Glen, Herlear and Verwoed Park. Police would like to warn owners to park their motor-cycles out of the public eye (at night). In some areas, dogs are still being poisoned and motor-cycles get stolen.

“The community is urged to be alert and respond immediately when they hear their dogs barking,” concludes Kock.

Rustenburg – Two police constables were found dead in Dibate near Mmabatho in what is believed to have been a murder-suicide, North West police said on Wednesday.

“Yesterday [Tuesday] the police in Mmabatho visited a gruesome scene at Dibate village few kilometres away from the Mmabatho police station. This was in response to a murder-suicide of Constable Johannes Matladi, 37, and Constable Audrey Karele, 31, both stationed at Mmabatho,” said police spokesperson Captain Paul Ramaloko.

“It is understood that Constable Matladi was on duty yesterday (Tuesday) when he visited his place of residence, apparently to grab food around lunch time. When he was called on police radio by his crew he did not respond.

The launch of Bokone Bophirima Maize Triangle Challenge to take place

Delareyville- Efforts to revive and sustain sport activities especially football as part of the vision to rebrand, reposition and renew the Bokone Bophirima Province will soon come to fruition, as top-class football will be coming to Bokone Bophirima with the launch of a four-team tournament to be played on July 11, 2015 exactly five years after the country hosted the FIFA World Cup final.

The launch of the Bokone Bophirima Maize Triangle Challenge will be held on Thursday, at Delareyville, Tswaing Local Municipality, which falls within the province’s Maize Triangle region.

Three South African Premier Soccer League sides from the country’s maize production provinces namely Bokone Bophirima’s Platinum Stars, Free State Province’s Bloemfontein Celtics and Mpumalanga Province’s Black Aces, as well as top Botswana Premier League outfit Township Rollers, will clash in the Bokone Bophirima Maize Triangle Challenge.

All matches will be played at the state-of-the-art Moruleng Stadium, with the teams paired into semi-finals and the winners advancing to the final.

“We are delighted to have four teams of such calibre competing in the inaugural Bokone Bophirima Maize Triangle Challenge this year and look forward to an outstanding day of football and entertainment for the people of this Province. We would like to thank all our stakeholders, particularly grain producers in the Bokone Bophirima, Free State and Mpumalanga provinces, who have helped to make this tournament a reality,” says Premier Supra Obakeng Ramoeletsi Mahumapelo who maintains that the tournament will contribute a great deal towards growing the province’s growth to 6% by 2019, through Agriculture, Culture and Tourism.

“The fact that this festival of football will come exactly five years after the 2010 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Netherlands allows us to relive that moment and celebrate again the successful hosting of one of the greatest World Cup tournaments in history,” Premier Mahumapelo added.

The launch of the Bokone Bophirima Maize Triangle Challenge which will be attended by sports personalities from the four teams and the football legends, will be held as follows:

CATA AND DAC HOLD COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SESSION ON STATUES

The national Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) and the Provincial Department of Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs (Cata) have invited about 250 participants to an engagement on the status and future of statues in the Province.

The Provincial event is scheduled for Friday, June 12 at the Herman Charles Bosman Living Museum in Groot Marico at the Ramotshere Moiloa Municipality (Zeerust).

The subject and theme of the day is “Heritage Landscape Transformation”.

Among those invited to the consultative workshop are political parties represented in the North West Provincial Legislature, faith-based groups, traditional leaders, the South African Local Government Association (Salga), the Provincial Geographic Names Council (PGNC) and practitioners in the heritage sphere – both national and from Bokone Bophirima.

The programme is scheduled to commence at 08:00 and last till lunch.

The MEC for Cata, Mme Tebogo Modise and senior national and provincial government officials from the DAC and Cata will be among those leading the proceedings.

The event follows engagements by DAC’s political head, Minister Nathi Mthethwa, in a national dialogue in April at the Freedom Park to discuss transformation of heritage landscape and how public space could be used for art and heritage.

After presentations by various stakeholders, the meeting resolved to take the resolutions of the engagement to various Provinces and allow them to voice their own opinions on how heritage should be shaped and transformed.

The national dialogue was called partly as a response to recent incidents and debates around colonial statues and busts across the country.

Commenting on the Friday event, Mme Modise said: “This provincial consultative workshop will intensify public awareness on the role of heritage in a developing society and can be used as a vehicle to reach out to the communities and consequently contribute towards the attainment of social cohesion and nation building.

“Some of the key objectives of the workshop are the re-affirmation of the significance of Heritage Landscapes as part of our Cultural Heritage in South Africa; the strengthening of unity and social cohesion among various sectors in society and the promotion of the spirit of preserving our Heritage resources.”

Murder suspect arrested at work

Johannesburg – A man is expected to appear in the Mandeni Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for allegedly killing a man and then escaping from custody, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

The 25-year-old allegedly stabbed Lungisani Nxumalo, 23, in the neck at a tavern in the Sundumbili area on May 4, after the two had had an argument the previous day, Major Thulani Zwane said in a statement.

‘Technicality’ frees alleged child kidnapper

Johannesburg – A woman who admitted to kidnapping a Katlehong child and keeping him captive for five months is walking free because police possibly botched the case against her.

The woman was arrested last week when the 6-year-old boy’s father saw him while on his way to a local spaza shop in another part of Katlehong, about 15km from where he was snatched.

‘I’ll break you white boy,’ Shaik tells News24 journalist

Durban – A terminally ill Schabir Shaik on Wednesday threatened a News24 journalist, telling him his health had improved enough for him to be able to headbutt the journalist and kick him in the genitals.

Shaik was granted medical parole in 2009 on the basis that he was terminally ill.

“I will kick you in the poes!”, “I could have given you a headbutt,” and “I will break you, white boy” were some vibrant threats that emanated from the former financial advisor to President Jacob Zuma.

Initially, the conversation had started off peacefully enough, with Shaik saying that he was relaxing at home. He was approached for comment on the decision to relax his parole conditions.

Queried about a media report that he was considering going into business, Shaik denied that he was doing this. He also said that he was not aware of the report and had never said that he was going into business.

Asked about his health, Shaik said: “My health is improving. Do you want to die? So why do you want me to die?”

‘I could have given you a headbutt’

It was then that he asked whether the telephone conversation was on the record. When told it was, he became angry.

“Who the fuck are you?”

Advised that he had been told upfront that he was speaking to a journalist from News24 and that this had been said at the outset of the telephone conversation, Shaik accused the journalist of “not having the balls” to interview him in person. 

“I could have given you a headbutt. I will break you white boy. I will kick you in your poes.”

Asked to confirm that he would be kicking the journalist in the genitals, Shaik reconfirmed that: “I will kick you in your poes.”

Asked how he knew that the journalist was white, his response was that the journalist “sounded like a white boy”.

He then accused the journalist of not being able to accept the fact that “South Africa was no longer being run by a white government”.

Moments later, the call was placed on hold. Attempts to redial the number were unsuccessful and the call went to voicemail.

In February 2011, Shaik was accused of assaulting a journalist on a golf course in Durban. The reporter had said Shaik throttled her and slapped her in her face.

Then not long after in March 2011, the former businessman had allegedly hit a distraught father outside a mosque.

And in September 2013, Shaik had also allegedly attacked a caddie on the same golf course.

Taung-Based Youth Support Organisation concern over youth ignorance

TAUNG-based Youth organisation appeal to the youth to heed the call and take charge of their lives.

The requisition came about after the organisation’s concerns over inundated calls they received from parents who are sick and tired of their kids who take life for granted.

FATLHOGANG Youth Support Organisation Manager, Kereng Plaatjie said they have received calls from concerned parents for assistance after their kids chose wayward activities.

“We always visit those parents who are concern and try to talk to their kids, unfortunately some of them does not take us serious, even though we try to make them see how important their future is,” Plaatjie said.

She said being part of a group can help young people develop important personal and interpersonal skills.

“These include the ability to think critically and solve problems, and the assumption of personal and group responsibility.

“It can also help young people gain self-confidence and self-esteem. Contributing to a group can help them see themselves as being able to really help other people, and having something important to offer,” she said.

According to a 32 year-old co-owner of Fatlhogang Youth Support
Organisation, Thabo Ntopo who is an ex-convict said they visit schools frequently to encourage young people to stand up against substance abuse, crime, teenage pregnancy and HIV/Aids.

“We visit schools in what we call a community dialogue, where we
give an opportunity to both parent and learner to discuss this issues
openly. We have realized that there is a lack of communication between
parents and the youth” Ntopo said.

Ntopo said their aim is to help in building moral, self-esteem and
confidence in their fellow young people, and to help them rise above
all circumstances.

The organisation said they help the youth to reduce the risk of becoming involved in unsafe activities, such as using drugs and alcohol.

“Being involved in community activities has been shown to be a protective factor–that is, it helps young people to make healthy choices. That’s because by being involved in an organization, they can develop a “safe” identity, and are less likely to participate in unsafe activities (such as becoming sexually active before they are ready) to feel they belong,” said Plaatjie.

She advised young people to get involved in organizations so that they can develop job skills, including organization, the ability to run meetings, and experience working with a wide variety of people.

“These skills that young people learn from being part of a group can help them be better prepared for any job they might choose,”.

North West Social Development department spokesperson, Petrus Siko said they offer free training through their skill development unit and encourages youth organisations not to give up because their part is very imperative within the communities.

“Often, organizations give youth a safe space that they wouldn’t have otherwise–a place where they can express themselves through arts and activities, or just by being able to talk openly with peers and caring adults.

“Youth organizations offer opportunities for leadership that young people might not get otherwise,” Siko said.

He said young people involved in organizations can receive information on staying safe and healthy from their peers or adults they know and respect. They then pass on this information to other young people.

“We would like to advise any organisation to always access our free training for skill developments if they encounter any challenges so that they can swiftly deal with problems at hand. Our doors are always opened and the youth must wake up and smell cup of coffee because life isn’t a game,” concludes Siko.

Young people exposed to career opportunities at Joburg Expo

Thousands of young people were on Wednesday exposed to career opportunities and new ideas at an Education Expo at Nasrec, Johannesburg. It’s all part of celebrations to mark ‘Youth Month’.

The event was organised by the Gauteng government in partnership with the SABC.

South Africa’s unemployment figures are very high, it’s believed that 75% of unemployed people are aged between 15 and 34 and youth unemployment stands at just over 52%, some High School learners have already started applying for jobs.

‘Benefits of the new e-toll dispensation are beginning to be felt’

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa says the benefits of the new e-toll dispensation are beginning to be felt. He’s told Parliament on Wednesday that the idea of having a referendum on e-tolls is not being considered, adding that government sometimes has to take unpopular decisions for the benefit of its citizens.

Last month Ramaphosa announced a new e-toll dispensation of reduced tariffs by up to 50 percent for Gauteng motorists.

The DA wanted to know if the new dispensation is financially viable for both SANRAL and ordinary motorists. The party claimed that the payment recovery cost is rising while actual payment received is falling short.
