Police investigate double murder in Belthorne Estate


CAPE TOWN – A suspect has been taken in for questioning following a fatal shooting in Athlone.

Two people were shot and killed after a fight broke out at a karaoke bar in Belthorne Estate on Saturday night.

Police discovered the body of a 40-year-old man outside the Turfhall Stadium when they attended to the scene shortly before midnight.

Del Bosque wins 100th match in charge of Spain


MOSCOW – Spain coach Vicente del Bosque celebrated 100 games in charge with a 1-0 victory over Belarus in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Sunday, Manchester City’s David Silva scoring the goal.

Victory at the Borisov Arena kept European champions Spain in second place in Group C with 15 points from six games, three points behind group leaders Slovakia.

‘Omar al-Bashir will leave SA when he’s ready to’


JOHANNESBURG – Sudan’s foreign minister has said the country’s President Omar al-Bashir will leave South Africa when he’s ready to and is not bound by a High Court decision obliging him to stay. 

Al-Bashir has been in this country attending the African Union (AU) Summit in Sandton but his visit has landed South Africa in a difficult diplomatic situation. 

‘NPA has no agenda against Jiba’


Pretoria – Assertions that the NPA is driving an agenda against deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Nomgcobo Jiba are incorrect, NDPP Mxolisi Nxasana said on Friday.

“When I received a call from the national police commissioner (Riah Phiyega), to be honest I still don’t know what was the reason for her call. She said the summons was not issued properly,” Nxasana told journalists at the National Prosecuting Authority’s office in Pretoria.

Tutu: Why not raise a statue to Graca?


Cape Town – The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation weighed in on the Rhodes statue debate on Friday, proposing that a statue of UCT’s chancellor, Graça Machel, could be erected on the university’s campus.

It added that a monument to the white UCT students who played a role in the anti-apartheid struggle should also be considered.

In a statement written by its executive director, Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu, the organisation credited students on campus for sparking an “important societal debate”. However, she said they had no right to destroy “our history, as some are threatening to do”.

Johannesburg – Former SA Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) president and SA Express board member Ezrom Mabyana has been jailed for stealing millions from workers’ trust funds and buying himself a house for R3.6 million.

Cutting a sad figure in the dock with his hands clasped before him, the 66-year-old looked defeated as magistrate Brian Nemavhidi sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment, suspended for five years on condition that he repay R1.2m.

Greed, said Nemavhidi in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Joburg, had driven Mabyana to his actions.

Manhunt after Pretoria mogul’s murder

Pretoria – The police are still hunting for a homeless man who allegedly murdered a Pretoria property mogul at his luxury house in Waterkloof over the weekend.

The 71-year-old was found brutally beaten and with severe head injuries by a handyman on Saturday afternoon.

Jacobus Christoffel “Chris” Orban was rushed to hospital, but did not recover from his injuries and was dead within 24 hours.

Brooklyn police spokeswoman Captain Colette Weilbach said the handyman who found him noticed that his employer’s SUV – a green Hyundai Tucson – a mountain bike and a plasma television were missing from the home.

Man guilty of keeping girl as ‘sex slave’

Kimberley – A Kimberley man has been found guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl, who he kept captive in his shack for almost a week, six times.

Mfundo Gumede is facing life behind bars after he was found guilty in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

According to the victim, she was at a tavern looking for a friend when Gumede grabbed her and forced her into his shanty at knifepoint on January 18, 2014.

Man accused of killing disabled sister

Rustenburg – A man accused of stabbing his disabled sister to death appeared briefly in the Bafokeng Magistrate’s Court in Tlhabane near Rustenburg on Wednesday.

Boiki Lucas Makgorogo told the court, through his new lawyer, that he would apply for bail. In his first appearance he told the court he did not want apply for bail.

The case was postponed to June 18 for bail application and to give him time to consult with his lawyer.

Makgorogo allegedly stabbed his younger sister Ellen Semakaleng Makgorogo, 54, to death on April 29 and dumped her body in the bushes near Rustenburg Kloof.

He allegedly killed her so that he could inherit their parents’ house in Tlhabane.

Semakaleng lived in the house after their parents died in 2010.
