‘A 13-year-old girl bludgeoned to death in De Aar’

A 13-year-old girl was allegedly bludgeoned to death by a 32-year-old man after a visit.

Northern Cape police said, Nomvuyo Daki (13) and her friend allegedly visited a 32-year-old man in De Aar location, Northern Cape on Saturday.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Sergio Kock said the body of Nomvuyo was found lying in the street with head injuries next the suspect’s house on Sunday.

“A 32-year-old man was subsequently arrested in connection of Nomvuyo’s death. Her body was found lying in the street next to the suspect’s house. We cannot rule out a rape, but that will be confirmed after post-mortem,” Kock said.

According to Kock, the suspect will appear before court soon.

Police said Nomvuyo’s friend allegedly left the house and left two together and even though the details amid Nomvuyo’s death are sketchy, police believe the suspect might have killed her.

KZN PREMIER CLOSES THE 2015 DURBAN U19 INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT

The second edition of the Durban U19 International Football Tournament has come to an end with London side Arsenal lifting the trophy after a hard fought 2-1 win over Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.

The clash took place at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, 8 August 2015.

KwaZulu Natal Premier, The Honourable Senzo Mchunu presided over the closing ceremony.

“Today we conclude 11 days of exciting football in KwaZulu Natal as we host the final of the 2nd Edition of the Durban u19 International Football Tournament. KwaZulu-Natal, together with eThekwini Municipality, SAFA and Hoy Park Management have again shown the world how committed we are to true football development,” said Premier Mchunu.

“The fair play spirit in the beautiful game prevailed each day of this tournament, and as we prepare for to celebrate Women’s Day in South Africa, we want to recognise the mothers and all women in particular for their unselfish contribution in our lives. We would also like to thank everyone for their great support and trust they will continue doing so.”

Eight teams took part in the tournament, which started on Wednesday, 29 July – with two South African sides joining six international squads.

The participating teams were the KwaZulu-Natal Academy Team, the South African U19 squad, VFB Stuttgart (Germany), Galatasary (Turkey), AC Milan (Italy), PSV Eindhoven (Holland), Celtic (Scotland) and Arsenal Academy (England).

Four venues were used to host the tournament – King Zwelithini Stadium (Umlazi), Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium (Claremont), Princess Magogo Stadium (KwaMashu) and Moses Mabhida (Durban Central).

The venues were also part of the inaugural tournament in 2014, which was won by Santos FC of Brazil.

For the 2015 edition, South Africa U19 managed bronze after defeating Stuttgart 2-0 in the 3rd/4th place play-off also at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
There were also individual awards on offer.

The Top Goal scorer accolade was a shared affair between Ben Sheaf of Arsenal and Muhammed Yesilyurt of Galatasaray, who scored three goals each.

Sheath was a triple winner as he walked away with not only the winners’ medal and the Top Goal Scorer award but he also scooped the Player of the Tournament award.

Hoy Park Management, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, and the eThekwini Municipality in partnership with the South African Football Association (SAFA) staged the tournament.

Arsenal lifts the 2015 Durban U19 International Football Tournament title

Arsenal Academy of London have won the 2015 Durban U19 International Football Tournament after defeating PSV Eindhoven of Holland 2-1 in a hard-fought final played on Saturday, 8 August 2015 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Two goals from Ben Sheaf and Yassin Fortune on either side of the half were enough to give the Young Gunners victory in their maiden appearance at the tournament.

Arsenal could have taken the lead as early as the 18th minute but Gedion Zelalem saw his spot kick brilliantly saved by Mike van de Meulenhof in the PSV goals.

A minute later Fortune also had a chance to give his side the lead but instead he ballooned his shot with the keeper in no man’s land.

The London side made their high ball possession count when Fortune fired a long-range cracker in the 25th minute which gave Van de Meulenhof no chance this time.

Rigo Dante came off the bench to restore parity in the 66th minute.

With the match seemingly heading for a penalty shootout (as no extra time was to be played), Sheaf had other ideas and struck a killer blow with one minute of regulation time remaining to break the hearts of the PSV side that had come back strongly in the closing stages of the match.

It was another well-worked goal from Arsenal as Sheaf dribbled past defenders and coolly beat the advancing keeper.

It was his third goal of the tournament to leave him joint top goal scorer with Muhammed Yesilyurt of Galatasary.

Sheaf was also named Player of the Tournament.

Earlier in the day the South African U19 team beat VFB Stuttgart of Germany 2-0 to claim bronze in the third/fourth place playoff.

Masilake Phohlongo and Keletso Makgalwa scored in the 34th and 63rd minutes respectively for South Africa, with the latter being named Man of the Match.

The other teams that took part in the tournament were the KwaZulu-Natal Academy Team, Galatasary (Turkey), AC Milan (Italy), and Celtic (Scotland).

Man allegedly rapes 75-year-old woman

Butterworth – A man has been arrested after he allegedly raped a 75-year-old woman in Centane, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

“It is alleged that the victim was sleeping alone at her house [on Monday, August 3] when she felt somebody inside her bed,” Captain Jackson  Manatha said.

Stabbing victim dies while waiting for transport to hospital

Mthatha – A 19-year-old stab victim died at his home in rural Dutywa while his family desperately tried to organise transport to take him to hospital, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

“The family was trying to… get a private vehicle. Unfortunately he died before the transport arrived,” said Captain Jackson Manatha.

“Here in the rural areas, we don’t have these ambulances… We make use of our own private transport. If you are going to wait for ambulances, you will wait for two hours,” said Manatha.

Marikana widows will spend Women’s Day mourning – Holomisa

Rustenburg – The women of Marikana will be mourning their loved ones instead of celebrating Women’s Day on Sunday, United Democratic Movement (UDM) leader Bantu Holomisa said on Sunday.

“Women of this part of the world [Marikana] were subjected to a painful experience of losing their only… hope for a meal. These women are now widows,” he told people gathered at Nkaneng informal settlement near Marikana.

We thought we were going to die – SA volunteer in Mali

Johannesburg – A Gift of the Givers volunteer has detailed how he and two fellow South Africans were convinced they were going to die when a siege broke out at a Malian hotel in which they were staying.

“We thought that we were definitely going to die,” the volunteer said via a statement released by the humanitarian aid organisation.

Committee on Health to meet MEC for Health over the Deteriorating State of Health Facilities in the North West Province

The North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Health and Social Development will hold a meeting with the MEC for the Department of Health, MEC Magome Masike including his senior officials at the Matlosana Local Municipality at 08h00.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the state of all health facilities that the committee conducted oversight visits at and were found to be in a state of corrosion.

Amongst those expected to form part of the meeting are the CEO’s and Board Chairpersons of affected facilities.

Four arrested for possession of illegal firearms

Johannesburg – Four men were arrested by Johannesburg metro police on a charge of possession of illegal firearms on Thursday morning, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

“An officer spotted a green Mercedes Benz driving recklessly on the N1 south, near William Nicol,” he told News24.

“He gave chase and made them pull over. This was around 09:35. He ordered all four occupants to get out and put their hands on top of the car.”
