A 36-YEAR-OLD police constable appeared in Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court for conspiracy to commit murder today.

  Constable Pule Maboke was arrested in Ikageng Township, near Potchefstroom on Friday. 

North West police spokesperson, Col Sabata Mokgwabone said police received information that linked the suspect to a plot of killing an investigating officer in attempted murder and house robbery cases.

  “The suspect together with four other accomplices who were in detention, were allegedly plotting to kill an investigating officer of cases of attempted murder and house robbery involving the accomplices of the constable. The police were tipped off about the plan and the constable was arrested at his place on Friday.

  “He appeared in court on the same day, but was remanded in custody for further investigation and formal bail application. Preliminary investigation has revealed that Maboke and the four accomplices are involved in approximately 20 cases of burglary and theft as well as robberies committed in Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom, Ikageng and Viljoenskroon,” Mokgwabone said.

 The provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane condemned the incident.

  She indicated that rogue elements have no space in the South African Police Service. Motshwenyane indicated that bad apples that pretend to be police officers and commit crime will be weeded out.

Police officers who are caught on the wrong side of the law continue to taint the image of the organisation and Motswenyane said that those caught will be dealt with harshly.

President Jacob Zuma’s convicted former financial advisor Schabir Shaik is willing to testify if corruption‚ fraud and racketeering charges are pursued in court against Zuma.

Shaik served 28 months of a 15-year jail sentence for fraud and corruption related to the arms deal before being granted medical parole due to a “terminal illness”.

He told the Daily News newspaper in Durban‚ in an interview published on Tuesday‚ that he welcomed the fact that Zuma may get his day in court and that he may have to testify.

“There has been a well-planned strategy to discredit the president and myself by certain members within our organisation‚ the ANC‚ ever since Zuma stepped into office. I have always stated that President Zuma was never involved in the arms procurement deal or influenced any company‚ including my own‚ to win or lose any tender‚” he said.

A full bench of the High Court in Pretoria last week set aside a decision by former National Prosecuting Authority head Mokotedi Mpshe not to prosecute Zuma in April 2009.

PARLIAMENT – EFF MP Nazier Paulsen hurled abuse at DA MP Yusuf Cassim in Parliament on Tuesday, calling him a “kafir” – an Arabic word for a non-believer or infidel – as opposed to “k****r.

The two MP had a heated exchange during a debate on the Department of International Relations and Co-operation’s budget.

It would appear that the exchange happened when National Freedom Party MP Shaik Emam accused the DA of oppressing Palestinians through its support for Israel.

Cassim rose on a point of order and told the house: “This honourable member from the EFF has just walked up to me and swear (sic) at me…” 

Paulsen shouted at Cassim, calling him a, “Zionist, sell-out kafir”.

Emam later told the house the word “kafir” meant non-believer.

But chairperson Mmatlala Grace Boroto said she was not able to hear everything and asked the two to submit written submissions of the exchange to the rules committee.

ANC MP Naledi Pandor told the debate the two had been engaged in an altercation for some time.

“Both were involved. I was observing… quite closely. Honourable Paulsen sat down and was quiet and the honourable (Cassim) member said something which caused the honourable Paulsen to stand up,” Pandor said.

POTCHEFSTROOM- A pedestrian was knocked over by a truck on the N12 near Potchefstroom this morning. ER24 spokesperson, Pieter Rossouw said a man, 50 was allegedly trying to cross the highway.

“When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene they found that the man had sustained multiple fatal injuries. There was unfortunately nothing paramedics could do to resuscitate the deceased. He was declared dead on scene. The local authorities were on scene for further investigation,” Rossouw said.

Platinum Stars have secured a 2-1 win over Orlando Pirates at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in the Absa Premiership clash on Monday evining.

Stars’ win sees them leapfrog Kaizer Chiefs into the third spot on the log. Dikwena took the lead just after seven minutes through Gift Sithole.

Pirates showed off some skillful play in the 36th minute when they were awarded a free kick for a foul on Menzi Masuku. Mpho Makola took the free-kick which found Sifiso Myeni whose header went over the bar.

The game went to half time break with Stars leading Pirates. However, the Buccaneers started the second half as the stronger side, but they founded themselves conceding the second goal as Ndumiso Mabena scored cheeky back-heel to make it 2-0.

The visitors got their goal in the 73rd minute through Miyeni. Eric Tinkler’s side pushed for the equaliser but failed to penetrate Stars’ defence. The game ended 2-1 with Dikwena securing a maximum points.

NORTH WEST police said they have re-arrested a fugitive Danon Kruger in Lichtenburg on Sunday at around 1am. Kruger allegedly escaped from lawful custody three weeks ago. North West police spokesperson, Col Sabata Mokgwabone said the suspect was detained for two business burglary cases.

“The alleged crimes were both committed in March 2014 and 2016 respectively in Lichtenburg. The accused was re-arrested while trying to get out of town. Police worked together with neighbourhood watch and arrested the suspect. He is expected to appear in the Lichtenburg Magistrate’s Court on May 3,” he said.

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane commended the Lichtenburg neighbourhood watch and the police for their cooperation that led to the arrest.

CULTURE, arts and traditional affairs, tourism departments and Mahikeng local municipality embarked on a talent search across the province. CATA spokesperson, Shirley Montsho said the “Do You Wanna Be a Music Superstar talent search” was launched back in September last year.

She said the competition reached its climax. Montsho said the main objective of the project was to unearthed and harness future legends from the province.

“The event will be held at Mmabatho Convention Centre on May 14. The winning song from the up and coming artists top five will be announced at the event. The Project is a partnership between Education Alive, CATA, Tourism and the Mahikeng local Municipality in North West.

“The National Lotteries Commission funded Education Alive, which is part of a worldwide non-profit educational organisation. The aim of the project is to stage an artist skills and talent development project. The project was launch in the province through a “Hit song”,” Montsho said.

She further added that the search was aimed at identifying songs from potential artists.

“This also carries forward the government’s objective and mandate of implementing the five concretes, amongst them to Rebrand, Reposition and Renewal the province through Agriculture, Culture and Tourism (ACT). Eighty artists were chosen out of 500 demos received.

“The chosen artists attended a five day workshop valued at R20 000 per entrant. They received workshop from highly skilled from executives in the music industry. Five best songs were identified through a selection process,” she said.

Montsho said the selected songs were played on Motsweding FM. She further added that listeners were requested to vote for their best song through short message service (sms). Montsho also added that the top 5 finalists will be revealed on Tuesday at a media briefing.

The Congress Of the People (COPE) is calling for the arrest of ANCYL leader Collen Maine, following reports that the government may be considering charges against Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema.

The Sunday Times reported that Minister of State Security David Mahlobo has now taken charge of government efforts to have EFF leader Julius Malema arrested for making “violent threats” against the state.

Three people were killed following a taxi crash that occurred on the N12 near Potchefstroom on the Gauteng’s west rand.

Eight others have been injured and were transported to nearby hospitals.

It is alleged that the taxi driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to roll several times.

This is the second taxi accident in the west rand over the long weekend after a gruesome accident claimed 14 lives in Randfontein on Friday.

ER24 spokesperson Pieter Rossouw says among those who were killed were two children under the age of twelve.

“The taxi collision occurred on the N12 about ten kilometres from Potchefstroom in the direction of Klerksdorp. When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene they found that over and above the deceased patients, there were eight other patients, six of which had critical injuries.”
