4 September 2026 – The North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management has confirmed the recovery of the body of Lucas Lebelelang Kgosimore (34), who drowned at Tongtonyane Dam in Mahikeng on 28 August 2026. The department said at around midday, Kgosimore was reportedly fishing from a canoe when the canoe capsized.
The North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Virginia Tlhapi said according to an eyewitness report provided to the South African Police Service (SAPS), he attempted to swim to the shore, but was unable to reach safety. Tlhapi said the police and officials from the Office of the MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management responded promptly to the scene.
“Due to the hazardous conditions at the dam, additional resources were requested to assist with the search and recovery operation. The Police Water and Dive Rescue Team arrived on the morning of Saturday, 29 August 2026, and successfully recovered Kgosimore’s body.
“We strongly condemn the practice of fishing without taking the necessary safety precautions. As we approach the autumn season, we may experience flooding and other dangerous weather conditions,” she said.
Tlhapi further said she therefore urge communities to look after one another, as flooding can result in loss of lives and other tragedies. She encouraged local fishers to wear properly fitted life jackets, avoid entering dams and water streams during windy or stormy conditions and refrain from fishing when water levels are rising or flooding occurs.
“Every life is valuable. We call on communities to act responsibly and to prioritise safety at all times when near dams, rivers and water streams. On behalf of the department, I extend my deepest condolences to the Kgosimore family during this difficult time.
“The department commends the Police Water and Dive Rescue Team, emergency personnels from fire and secure team and all other role players who participated in the search and recovery operation,” added Tlhapi.
