9 October 2026 – The Vredefort Dome is the world’s largest and second oldest verified meteorite impact site, located in Potchefstroom, North West, Parys in Free State and Gauteng Province. According to information, the Vredefort Dome was formed approximately 2 billion years ago when an asteroid roughly 10 to 15km in diameter struck earth.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a dramatic landscape of rugged hills, unique geological formations, and excellent outdoor adventure opportunities and it is just a two-hour drive from Johannesburg. While the original crater ring has eroded over billions of years, the remaining “dome” is a spectacular 70 km wide network of overturned volcanic hills created by the rebounding earth after impact.

A qualified tourist guide, Bahedile Dichaba said it was designated as a World Heritage Site in 2005, Vredefort Dome serves as a crucial window into the planet’s geological evolution and the profound impact of asteroid collisions. Dichaba said their primarily white rocks found at Vredefort Dome are typically the result of target rocks being pulverized, shock-melted, or chemically altered by the extreme heat and pressure of a meteorite impact.

“The intense heat and pressure created rare geological features, including pseudotachylite (melted rock veins) and shatter cones (distinctive cone-shaped fracture patterns in the bedrock). So, there are various activities offered there such as excellent white-water rafting, kayaking, and target fishing for yellowfish.

“To truly see the impact scars, it is highly recommended to book a guided geological tour. Local experts will show you hidden shatter cones and rock carvings that are easy to miss on your own. The rugged, hilly terrain provides highly technical and scenic trails for outdoor athletes such as mountain biking and trail running,” he said.

Dichaba further said one can make it an easy weekend escape or a comprehensive day trip. He added that the best time to visit is during the dry winter months (May to September), which are ideal for hiking and outdoor exploring, while summer (November to February) is peak time for river-based water sports.

Meanwhile, all the classical related characteristics of a large astrobleme are found in the property. This multi-ring structure formed by the impact scar illustrates the effect of shock metamorphism of rocks, transformation of crystal structures and shatter cones of the immense force created by the impact.

Vredefort Dome is the oldest, largest, and most deeply eroded complex meteorite impact structure in the world. It is the site of the world’s greatest single, known energy release event.

It contains high quality and accessible geological (outcrop) sites which demonstrate a range of geological evidence of a complex meteorite impact structure. The rural and natural landscapes of the serial property help portray the magnitude of the ring structures resulting from the impact. The serial nomination is considered to be a representative sample of a complex meteorite impact structure.
