Scores of public servants and community members across the province will this week on Wednesday join the world in celebrating Move for Health Day.

Bokone Bophirima provincial government, Brian Setswambung said the  international event aimed at promoting physical activities, healthy and diet. 

“Move for Health Day was launched in 2002 by the World Health Organisation and is celebrated annually. This week’s Move for Health Day activities will coincide with the beginning of the monthly provincial Setsokotsane 10-by-10 Campaign.

“This will include amongst others, the promotion of healthy living and raising awareness on obesity,” Setswambung said.

He added that they are working in collaboration with the provincial departments of Health, Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs as well as Education and Sport Development in coordinating the celebration of the Provincial Move for Health Day.

“The participation will involve more than 4000 government employees and members of the public. The provincial government has declared this day an official public service sport and recreation day, this in line with the provincial government’s policy on Employee Health and Wellness and the overarching National Development Plan 2030, which has put health high on its priority list,” he said.

Setswambung said that the day also aims to generate public awareness on the benefits of physical activities in the prevention of non-communicable diseases.

He further said physical activities targeted for the day will include fun walk, fun run, aerobics and recreational games. 

“Exhibitions aimed at promoting good nutrition and the benefit of physical activities will also be on display. Activities across the province will start at 06h30,” he said.

The first three try-outs of the Nedbank KeYona Team Search have been concluded. South Africa’s football coaching maestros Owen da Gama, Mike Mangena, Shakes Mashaba and Khabo Zondo are continuing the journey to identify, develop and ultimately deliver their selection of the best raw footballing talent Mzansi has to offer. With a little under two weeks to go before the next batch of try-outs, Nedbank KeYona Team Search entrants should be motivated at the opportunity that awaits them to impress the KeYona selectors and become South Africa’s newest rising stars, following in the footsteps of Aubrey Modiba who has gone on to represent Bafana Bafana and the Men’s Olympic Team after being spotted at the trials in 2014.

The first phase of the highly-anticipated competition kicked off on the 27^th of April at the Nedbank Cup holders Supersport United’s home ground, Lucas Moripe Stadium, in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria. Close to 500 trialists participated and the try-outs were off to an early start as entrants arrived at the stadium gates two hours prior to registration. A similar scene was witnessed on Saturday April 29^th when approximately 400 entrants flocked to the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein to try their luck. The last of the first three try-outs ended at Cape Town’s Athlone stadium on the 1^st of May where there were 477 registered trialists. 

KeYona Team selector Mike Mangena, speaking at the Cape Town Try Out, gave his views about the untapped talent that turned out in their numbers, “Many aspirant footballers have big dreams and within those dreams lie a responsibility for us to channel the correct energy and resources into ensuring that the young hopefuls are not only validated, but given a relevant platform from which they can excel. The Nedbank KeYona Team Search is that platform. We are thoroughly impressed with the quality and determination of the players that we have seen thus far and we believe that the next three cities will give us solid players such as the like of AmaTuks Striker Ian Chikowa or Mwenya Chibwe from Platinum Stars” concluded Mangena.

The talent pull that will be selected from the Try Out phase of the competition will go through a rigorous selection criteria at the next phase of the competition which is boot camp. The final 18 will be drafted into PSL teams after playing at the KeYona Challenge against the 2017 Nedbank Cup winners.

The try-outs will now be rolled out in three more cities and the selectors have urged the aspiring hopefuls to bring their A game.

One person has been killed and four others have been injured in a motor vehicle collision between two Toyota Corolla in Rustenburg on Saturday evening. Er24 spokesperson, Annine Siddall said the collision took place on the R30 between Derby and Ventersdorp at 17h10.

“At the time of their arrival, ER24 paramedics found the driver of one of the vehicles trapped in his car and unfortunately he was declared dead on the scene. Our paramedics also found the driver of the other vehicle in a critical condition and transported him to a nearby hospital for further care.

“Three other patients sustained moderate injuries and were all transported to nearby hospitals by other emergency services. Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations,” Siddall said.

ONE person died, two injured on a head-on collision in Postmasburg on Sunday. Netcare 911 spokesperson, Chris Botha said details to the cause of the crash are still speculative and will form part of the police investigation.

“The Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and found the crumpled remains of the vehicles obstructing the roadway. After the injured were examined, it was found that the driver of one vehicle tragically died on impact. Two others were injured one seriously, while the other miraculously escaped with minor injuries.

“The injured were treated at the scene before they were taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment,” Botha said.

Coligny – The Coligny Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to the two farm workers accused of killing a teenager, allegedly sparking violent protests in the area.

“There is no link between the said witness evidence [of the alleged crime] and the two accused persons at this stage,” Magistrate Magaola Foso said.

They were granted bail of R5 000 each.

The court gallery was packed with reporters and members of the public, for the application of Pieter Doorewaard, 26, and Philip Schutte, 34.

Matlhomola Moshoeu’s parents sat in the front row, accompanied by relatives.

Members of the community, including a large group of pupils protested outside court while police kept a close watch.

The pair allegedly caught Moshoeu, 16, stealing sunflowers on April 20. They claimed they were driving him to the local police station when he allegedly jumped off their bakkie and broke his neck.

An eyewitness alleges he was pushed off. Some residents claimed he was killed because he was black, which apparently sparked the protests in the area.

Prosecutor Khetheni Mudau said when the men handed themselves to police on April 25, the protests stopped – which was an indication that the protests were not related to service delivery.

The men’s lawyer, PJ Smith, told the court they believed the allegations made by the State’s witness did not corroborate a statement he made to a police officer, Brigadier Clifford Matome Kgorane.

Smith argued that the court should consider that the accused handed themselves over to police.

Moshoeu, whose name means “Sorrow”, was buried at the Scotland informal settlement on Sunday.

“Moreover, he will report progress his office has registered in supporting the provincial departments and State Owned Entities to implement the five concretes, namely – Agriculture, Culture and Tourism (ACT), Villages, Townships and Small Dorpies (VTSD), Reconciliation, Healing and Renewal (RHR), Setsokotsane and Saamwerk-Saamtrek.”

He said a post Budget Vote media engagement session will be held immediately after the presentation.”

It been well over a year since Cassper Nyovest and Boity Thulo called time on their fairytale romance and the rapper has bared his soul about their relationship and break-up.

Cassper dropped a bunch of confessions in a new track called I Wasn’t Ready for You on Friday. The track features on the rapper’s third album, Thuto.

He started the track by admitting that he had been drowning his sorrows after the break-up and had been thinking a lot about what had gone wrong with the couple’s relationship.

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, Pitso Mosimane was disappointed with the 2-2 draw against Platinum Stars on home soil.

The Brazilians missed the chance to move back to the top of the Absa Premiership standings, after dropping points against Dikwena on Thursday evening.

“Of course it was a disappointing result. We gave it our best shot,” Mosimane said aftert the game.

“We spent the whole morning talking about the throw-ins and set pieces because against Wits we conceded on a throw-in, which was for us and again tonight we concede from a throw-in.

“Even the second goal was a set-piece, quickly taken. Against Golden Arrows it was the same thing in the Nedbank Cup. But it’s lessons in football, you never know, maybe we need the point but to be honest we should have won.”

Mosimane also commented on the threat of Ndumiso Mabena, who netted a brace on the night.

“I called it. He’s (Mabena) not been playing all the time and the suddenly Cavin Johnson puts him there, and he’s experienced and he knows how to play,” he added.

“He (Johnson) put in his best line up, that’s the one to win. I don’t know why he didn’t put them in for the last three games. Maybe they waited for Sundowns?”

Cape Town – After a lengthy recruitment process, the South Africa Football Association (SAFA) has officially announced Stuart Baxter as the new Bafana Bafana head coach.

The SuperSport United head coach will leave the club at the end of the season to bring stability to the national side.

Baxter, 63, will be officially unveiled as the head coach by SAFA President Danny Jordaan upon his return to South Africa from CAF and FIFA commitments.

“We are pleased to have finally reached agreement with SuperSport United on the release of coach Baxter,” said SAFA CEO Dennis Mumble.

“SAFA believes that the coach has the necessary skills to navigate the tough qualification path for the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.

“We thank SuperSport United for their support towards the goals of the Association and its national teams.”

Baxter will meanwhile, continue to fulfil his coaching responsibilities at the club for the remaining four Absa Premiership fixtures as well as the Nedbank Cup and Confederations Cup.

SAFA and SuperSport United have agreed to work together to ensure that Baxter gets time off post the final league match on Saturday, May 27 to prepare Bafana Bafana for the upcoming AFCON match against Nigeria.

Baxter previously mentored South Africa for a year between 2004 and 2005 and shortly resigned after Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the 2006 Soccer World Cup.

SAFA have for months searched across the globe to find a suitable candidate and went public after releasing a statement that they have assembled a selection committee to advise SAFA on the best coach for Bafana Bafana.

The selection committee included the likes of former Bafana Bafana stars Benni McCarthy, Lucas Radebe and Neil Tovey along with ex-coach Clive Barker.  

The names mentioned in the statement was Roberto Mancini, Giovanni Trapattoni, Hassan Shehata, Hugo Broos, Samson Siasia, Lothar Matthaus and Bernd Schuster.

Despite not being mentioned in the SAFA statement, Sport24 reported in March that Herve Renard and Carlos Queiroz were the final two in the race for the job with an announcement “imminent”.

However, in a single Twitter post shortly thereafter via the official Bafana Bafana account, the association confirmed that the announcement had been postponed due to the unavailability of the chosen candidate.

South Africa have been without a coach since the footballing body axed Shakes Mashaba in December last year.

The 66-year-old Mashaba was found guilty of insulting top football officials after South Africa’s 2018 Soccer World Cup qualifier victory over Senegal.

Meanwhile, Owen da Gama has been in charge of the senior side on an interim basis and has already guided Bafana Bafana to a 3-1 victory over Guinea Bissau and a goalless draw against Angola during the recent FIFA international break.

Bafana Bafana will next play in June against Nigeria in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

Mahikeng – A 21-year-old BCom student died of an asthma attack at the University of North West’s Mahikeng campus under circumstances that have left his parents wondering whether the institution could have done more to save his life.

As the world celebrates World Asthma Day on Tuesday, Senuku Metswamere is battling to deal with the loss of her son Paballo, who died at the campus’s security post where he had rushed when having the attack.

Allegations are that the campus’s first aid response car was called but took a while to arrive. Neither the car nor the security vehicle rushed him to the clinic, which is about 10 minutes away.

An official statement said Paballo died before anyone could do anything, and when the campus’s first aid vehicle arrived, he was already dead.

Senuku said the family were devastated by Paballo’s death and hoped more could be done by NWU to prevent further deaths.

“What bothers me is that there was a vehicle there that could have taken him to the hospital, but they waited for an ambulance – which took long,” Senuku told The Star on Monday.

Senuku said she received a call from Paballo that evening, asking her to bring him his spare asthma pump.

“It was already late and I knew he was studying, preparing for a test, and I didn’t take the pump to him,” Senuku said.

It seems Paballo’s condition worsened, but she missed his calls as her cellphone was on a charger.

“He called again and pleaded with me to fetch him. I arranged transport, but when I tried to call him back he wasn’t answering the phone,” she said.

On her arrival at the university, she found her son on the floor, surrounded by students and security personnel.

“I was told that the first aid vehicle was called but was not authorised to take him to the hospital and they had to wait for an EMS vehicle. At that point my son had already passed on,” she said. “My husband checked for a pulse but found none.”

She said three hours had elapsed since her son’s first attempt at getting help.

The 21-year-old was buried on Friday.

A student who preferred to remain anonymous said Paballo was not immediately taken to a nearby hospital by the institution’s first aid response team.

“Security called the university’s emergency personnel, but they took long and when they arrived, he had already passed on.”

NWU spokesperson Louis Jacobs denied any wrongdoing by the university, saying protocol was adhered to, and the university was not responsible for transporting Paballo to a hospital.

“An emergency vehicle was called to the scene while a provincial ambulance was also called to attend to the student,” Jacobs said. “But by the time the ambulances arrived, the student had passed on.”

He added that the loss of a student’s life, regardless of where or how it might happen, remained a tragedy to the university.
