North West MEC for Health, Madoda Sambatha to conduct oversight visits to hospitals affected by ‘food shortages’

North West MEC for Health, Madoda Sambatha will conduct oversight visits to hospitals around the Ngaka Modiri Molema and Bojanala Districts. This comes after the reports over food shortages at the Mahikeng Provincial Hospital (MPH) and Lehurutshe Hospital in Zeerust. 

Sambatha said he will do an oversight visit at Mahikeng Provincial Hospital in Mahikeng on Friday from 2pm until 3pm. He further said that he will visit Lehurutshe Hospital in Zeerust on Friday at 4pm until 5pm. 

“On Saturday, I will be conducting an oversight visit at Moses Kotane Hospital in Ledig at 11am until 12pm. Then, I will be at Job Shimankane Tabane Hospital in Rustenburg from 1pm until 2pm. The department has noted with serious concern allegations currently circulating on social media platforms saying there is a shortage of food in hospitals. 

“The department said the information goes on to call on families of patients to go to hospitals to take their patients on the basis of the alleged shortage of food. We wish to strongly condemn this misinformed and ill-conceived call, which violates patients’ rights and seeks to cause confusion and panic in public health facilities,” he said. 

Sambatha further said, while the misinformation seeks to paint a picture of total and widespread shortage of food, the department can only confirm that, a quick investigation on the matter revealed that the quantity of food was the only issue of concern.

He added that, it turned out that some of the items of food were missing from the normal meals at Lehurutshe/Zeerust Hospital Complex, but the management quickly identified this and intervened. 

“This challenge has been traced to inadequate supplies from the contracted service provider. However, the hospital was quickly authorised to procure the food items on an emergency basis. 

“The other hospitals, which were also cited in some of the social media posts including Klerksdorp/Tshepong and Witrand. The department also implemented an emergency procurement to beef up the food stock levels,” said Sambatha.

He said, the members of the public are advised to report any issue of concern to the department for intervention before causing public panic on essential services in health facilities.

The missing Rosina Masego Ditlhase found murdered!

A body of a missing girl (14) was found by a passerby at Letlhakaneng village, near Letlhabile on Wednesday. Rosina Masego Ditlhase was last seen on 1 March 2024. 

The North West police spokesperson, Col Adele Myburgh said, Ditlhase was last seen at around 5:30pm by her grandmother at their residential place. Myburgh said she was wearing black jeans, a red and yellow T-shirt and a pair of black sandals. 

“Rosina had a slender body structure, average in height and is brown in complexion with a visible scar on the neck. Now, the Letlhabile police are now investigating a murder case. 

“Anyone who may have information that can assist the police with investigation, is requested to contact the Investigation Officer, Detective Sergeant Kgothatso Singo on 079 5955 474,” she said.  

Myburgh further said anonymous tip-offs can also be communicated via Crime Stop on ‪‪‪‪08600 10111 or the MySAPS App on one’s smartphone.

A man sentenced to seven years imprisonment for raping a girl

A man (18) has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment by the De Aar Regional Court for raping a girl (17) in Colesberg. The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock said, on 1 September 2023 at approximately 6:30pm, the victim attended a party with friends.

Kock said the victim woke up later that evening at her aunt’s house in Colesberg and found one of the men who attended the party, busy raping her. He further said the victim screamed for help and alerted her aunt.

“The suspect was arrested and later found guilty of rape. On 6 March 2024, he was sentenced to 7 years direct imprisonment and also declared unfit to possess a firearm,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, lauded the investigating officer D/Cst Headman Nogqala of the De Aar Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for his meticulous investigation that led to the conviction.

ANC mourns the death of its former councillor

The heartfelt condolences messages continue to pour in after the passing of the former ANC Bojanala Women’s League Secretary and Single Whip of the Madibeng Local Municipality, Mamoeketsi Elsie Kgautle. Kgautle, who is to be buried on Saturday in Sephai village, passed away last Friday in hospital after a short illness.

The African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature (NWPL), Paul Sebegoe, has conveyed condolences to the Kgautle family. Sebegoe described Kgautle as a selfless revolutionary cadre, gender activist, a unifier and a champion of rural development.

He further said Kgautle was a patriot, as well as a true servant of the people whose love for the rural masses and the broader communities that she served was beyond measure and inspirational.  

” We are deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Kgautle, whose activism within our revolutionary movement and structures of the ANC Women’s League was characterized by consistency, passion, unwavering commitment and dedication.

“She has left an indelible mark in the sands of time as she leaves behind a legacy of selflessness that characterised her revolutionary life. Even in the face adversity and uncertainty, Kgautle showed character that defined her leadership and unwavering commitment to the advancement of the National Democratic Revolution (NDR) and the renewal and unity programme,” said Sebegoe.

He added that, when she was not reelected as a councillor, she went back to the classroom to continue doing what she did best, i.e. serving wholeheartedly. Sebegoe said that, Kgautle who cut her political teeth as a SADTU shop steward, belonged to a generation of women that had challenged unjust laws affecting women, patriarchy and their triple oppression in terms of race, class and gender.

“We had looked up to her for principled leadership because she was not intimidated by anyone as she was a courageous, forthright and an assertive leader. As a protégé of the late ANCWL NEC Member, Violet Molotsi, she had followed in the footsteps of ANC stalwarts, trade unionists, Bertha Gxowa including Francis Baard hence she understood very well the importance of being above factions in order to advance unity of the ANC and the National Democratic Revolution.

“The Chief Whip’s Forum will miss her contribution and respect for collective leadership. She served with integrity and showed appreciation of the ANC’s core values. We salute her and dip our revolutionary banner in her honour and extend our condolences to the ANC Caucus and officials of the Madibeng Local Muncipality and the communities that she served,” he underscored.

Sebegoe said that a befitting tribute to Kgautle would be to strive for unity, as well as work tirelessly for a decisive ANC election victory during the 29 May 2024 National and Provincial elections.

North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi cracks the whip on ‘corrupt’ officials

North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi, has today announced the suspension of a school principal and a circuit manager in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District. Motsumi said these individuals have been served with precautionary suspension letters pending a thorough investigation into allegations of mismanagement of the departmental recruitment process within the Tshing Circuit. 

She further said the allegations have been brought to her attention by media reports, involve the potential soliciting or facilitating of monies in exchange for influence in the recruitment process. Motsumi added that her department takes all allegations of misconduct seriously. 

“We are committed to ensuring a fair and transparent recruitment process that upholds the highest ethical standards. As such, an independent investigation I have tasked into these allegations have commenced. 

“The department will ensure a swift and thorough investigation to determine the veracity of these claims and in the main, I have taken steps to ensure minimal disruption to education at the affected school,” she said.

Motsumi said an acting principal has been appointed to maintain stability and leadership, while the investigation unfolds and in the same breath, she wish to protect the whistleblower to this effect. She said her department remains committed to providing quality education to all learners in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District.

“The department will provide further updates on the investigation’s progress as information becomes available,” said Motsumi.

Three suspects nabbed for allegedly transporting stolen property

Three suspects aged between 27 and 45 were arrested for allegedly transporting stolen property. The police from Northern Cape Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit, together with the Kimberley K9 Unit, allegedly received a tip-off regarding a suspicious vehicle that was believed to be transporting stolen property.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Merapelo Pilane said the blue Volkswagen vehicle, was spotted at the Kimberley Tourism Centre, and the three men were found offloading large blue bags.

“Upon searching the bags, the police allegedly found the face value documents that are used for printing official documents, including temporary drivers licenses, motor vehicle licenses and vehicle registration certificates, as well as a printer with a scanner.

“The suspects could not provide a satisfactory explanation regarding ownership of the property in their possession. Further investigations revealed that, the stolen items were allegedly linked to a burglary that was reported at the municipality in Groblershoop on 19 February 2024,” she said.

Pilane said the investigation continues.

Drugs worth over R300 000 confiscated in three houses in Hartswater

Six suspects were arrested by police for dealing in drugs in Hartswater on 12 March 2024. According to the Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Molefi Shemane, the police arrested four Nigerian nationals aged 29, 36, 38 and 54, a South African man (36) and a South African woman (22).

Shemane said the police received a tip-off regarding the alleged sale of drugs at three premises in Hartswater. He further said three identified locations were allegedly raided respectively.

“A collective group consisting of members of Vala Umgodi under the overall Command of Colonel Jacob Moloi and Operational Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Tumi Seleke, the Kimberley Tactical Response Team (TRT), Kimberley Public Order Police (POP), Crime Intelligence, Pretoria Crime Scene Management (CSM) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) conducted the search.

“During the search and seizure actions, the police raided the suspected drug houses simultaneously in Verwoerd and Sandrock Streets in Hartswater. A significant amount of drugs were seized, including Crystal Meth (Tik) with an estimated street value of R 286 700,” said Shemane.

He added that, mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R 25 000, Cat with an estimated street valued of R 17 182, as well as  mandrax and sachets of nyaope were also seized. Shemane said nine cellphones, three cellphone charges and cash believed to be the proceeds of drug sales were confiscated.

“The suspects will appear in Hartswater Magistrates Court soon,” said Shemane.

Meanwhile, the Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, applauded the police and external role players involved in the execution of Operation Vala Umgodi for their continous efforts towards the prevention of crime in the province.
