SAFA begins with CAF B Diploma Coaching Course

The CAF B Diploma Coaching Course first phase got underway at Germiston Stadium, where 25 coaches will begin the journey to attaining their CAF B License Coaching badges. The first phase will run from 29 April to 5 May 2024. 

The coaches are expected to finish the course after three phases in July.

Speaking to www.safa.net, CAF Instructor Steve Coetzee, highlighted the topics for the first phase and spoke about the diversity within this group undertaking the CAF B Diploma Course.

“We are very happy to be conducting a CAF B Diploma Course after so many years. I know many coaches have been calling for these courses and we are proud to be able to deliver both the A and B Diploma’s in 2024.

“We will be working on the following topics this week, and we believe that the coaches will leave this phase with a lot of knowledge that they should start implementing within their various areas,” said Coetzee.

He said the areas are philosophy of football, technical development, evolution of systems, tactical development, psychology, laws of the game, player development, reading the game, coaching methodology and nutrition and injuries.

Coetzee further said they are happy with the mix of coaches present here. He added that they have coaches in the PSL, Motsepe Championship, Hollywoodbets Super League and the National teams, which is wonderful for group projects because we will have so many different perspectives of the game, from Coaching at the Elite, semi-professional level and international levels. 

“We are looking forward to a great session and wish all the coaches the best in attaining this Diploma,” said Coetzee.

Three suspects nabbed for ‘illegal’ mining

Three suspects aged between 28 and 53 were apprehended for illegal mining during the Operation Vala Umgodi. The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Molefi Shemane said the multi-disciplinary team followed up on intelligence-driven information regarding illegal mining activities taking place at a mine situated outside Windsorton on 27 April 2024.

“A tip-off was received that illegal miners were allegedly operating on privately-owned vacant land. When the police approached the identified mining area, the suspects allegedly fled in different directions, evading arrests.

“The police found equipment and mining implements believed to be used by the illegal miners,” said Shemane.

Meanwhile, the Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, applauded the police for their continued efforts and commitment in the fight against illegal mining in the Frances Baard District.

Families encouraged to vaccinate against preventable diseases

The Minister of Health, Dr Joe Phaahla together with the North West MEC for Health, Madoda Sambatha will on Tuesday, lead the African Vaccination Week (AVW) commemorative event at Itsoseng Sports ground in Hebron Village. 

The National Department of Health spokesperson, Foster Mohale said, this is a pivotal occasion to mark the 50thanniversary of Expanded Programme of Immunisation (EPI). Mohale said this includes its impact on saving lives and catalyzing renewed efforts to strengthen routine immunisation initiatives to prevent avoidable child deaths from childhood diseases.

“The African Vaccination Week is observed annually in the African Region to increase awareness of the importance of every person’s need and right (particularly every child and woman) to be protected from vaccine-preventable diseases. 

“The campaign also aims at keeping immunisation high on the national and regional agendas through advocacy and partnerships. The 2024 campaign will be commemorated under the theme: “The Big Catch Up! Vaccinated Population – Healthy Population,” which highlights the value of immunisation in preventing infectious vaccine-preventable diseases and safeguarding the health of communities.

“The commemoration also coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) campaign launched in 2014 to vaccinate young girls at the age of 9 years to prevent cervical cancer,” he said. 

Mohale further said cervical cancer is the second most common cancer after breast cancer. He added that breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in South Africa.

“The government has administered over 6 million doses of life-saving vaccines amongst young girls, since April 2014 to date. Phaahla and Sambatha, will be joined by local government and traditional leaders, representatives from stakeholders in the sector. 

“The UNICEF, World Health Organization (WHO) and civil society organisations promoting access to treatment and vaccines to improve health status through the prevention of diseases and the promotion of healthy lifestyles, will also be part,” said Mohale.

Education Lekgotla to enhance educational advancement within communities

The North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi said the Education Lekgotla that was held in Sun City Resort, Rustenburg, brought together key stakeholders from various sectors to discuss and strategize ways to enhance educational advancement in the communities.

Motsum said the gathering served as a platform for her department to engage with stakeholders in the business sector, urging them to collaborate closely in the department’s shared commitment to educational excellence.

“We are excited at the remarkable success of the Lekgotla. We have noted the overwhelming enthusiasm from stakeholders, many of whom demonstrated a keen willingness to pledge support towards educational initiatives.

“Today’s success at the Education Lekgotla, demonstrates the power of collaboration in driving meaningful change. I am heartened by the eagerness of stakeholders to invest in our educational endeavours, and I look forward to the positive impact of our collective efforts,” she said. 

Motsumi further said they will continue to ask for more stakeholders to join the wagon of taking an interest in the education of the children as a demonstration of the freedom they want to see realised going forward.

She added that, among those who graced the event was the Deputy Minister for Basic Education, Dr Reginah Mhaule, who emphasized the importance of improving inter-stakeholder collaboration. 

Meanwhile, Mhaule said: “Our educational goals can only be attained through a unified approach, uniting educators, administrators, community leaders and industry experts to craft a cohesive basic educational strategy. 

“This includes enabling us to adapt to new teaching methods, integrate technology in our classrooms and prepare our students for a world where change is the only constant.”

She said the DBE extends its gratitude to all participants for their invaluable contributions towards shaping the future of education in the nation with a commitment that fosters partnerships that transcend school fence boundaries.

South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in the North West said it commends the law enforcement agencies and ANC efforts in combating corruption According to SANCO provincial spokesperson, Mzukisi Jam said, they have long been vocal in condemning corruption within government, particularly municipalities, which often leads to the failure of efficient and effective service delivery. 

Jam said this pervasive issue stems primarily from maladministration, fraud and corruption, significantly impacting on the delivery of a better life promised to communities and the country’s developmental state agenda.

“As the progressive civic organisation determined to assist in fighting corruption in the province, we welcome the recent efforts made by law enforcement agencies in combating fraud and corruption. 

“The recent arrests of former Municipal Manager of Ditsobotla Local Municipality, Tsietsi Isaac Shema and the municipality’s Project Manager, Richard Thamsanqa Mtshali, to be specific,” he said. 

Jam further said these commendable achievements of arrests were conducted by the Hawks in Mahikeng and Zeerust, following an investigation into allegations of fraud and violations of supply chain processes. He added that the investigation revealed that the duo awarded a tender worth R760 000 to a service provider for the supply and installation of Clear View fences and gates at Biesiesvlei. 

“However, it was found that only a small portion of the area was fenced, yet the municipality was invoiced for work supposedly completed in May 2021. SANCO also acknowledges the ANC provincial leadership for swiftly responding to corruption allegations against some of the public servants and its government deployees. 

“Their responsiveness, including addressing SANCO’s calls for the removal of corrupt individuals tarnishing the ANC’s name and integrity, is appreciated. The ANC’s “Step Aside” policy is also a progressive initiative, which we highly commend as is slowly ensuring that corruption perpetuated by politicians, is a thing of the past in our government,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jam said they have raised concerns about the shenanigans against the Kagisano Molopo Local Municipality, mayor Tshireletso Marabutse and the Municipality Manager. He said the duo are accused of falsifying assessment reports, contributing to irregular appointments, including that of the Municipal Manager. 

“This subsequently led to the unrest and the eventual closure of the municipality premises for over three weeks, depriving the community of services for more than a month in the process. 

“SANCO welcomes the ANC’s decision to place the mayor on special leave pending a council meeting to determine their fate. While SANCO urges the ANC to decisively address corruption among its deployees, we call on

the leadership to look into all the reports of corruption allegations against its members and urge them to also deal with all the ward councillors implicated in the Kgalema Motlhanthe report,” said Jam.

He said SANCO continues to advocate for the ANC government to commission a forensic investigation into all the corruption allegations in government, including those involving the executive mayor of the City of Matlosana. 

Jam said due to the failure of the municipal council in dealing with this situation, they requested for an urgent intervention by the provincial leadership of the ANC, so that the municipality can start delivering services to the community. 

“The civic organization also urged the leadership to look into the allegations against the executive mayor of Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, Khumalo Molefe. SANCO equally likes to give credit where it’s due thereby commending the ANC government’s efforts to strengthen the fight against crime and corruption. 

“This includes steps that have already been taken to put 20,000 more police personnel on the streets, enhancing the capacity of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and courts, establishing specialized units and combating illegal mining and other priority crimes.

“The civic organisation remains committed to actively playing a role and engaging communities to assist in rooting out corruption from the government, which undermines the gains of democracy and shared prosperity,” he said.

15 people arrested during the termination of Robocop project appear in court

Fifteen people who were arrested during the termination of the Robocop project, briefly appeared in the Vryburg Magistrate’s Court on 25 April 2024. Itseng Mirriam Mavuma (54), Mooketsi Mavuma (44), Bhekimuzi Mawela (32), Menzi Baard (24), Samuel Pholo (44), Vuyani Mabeca (30), Mathe Konyane (43), Simane Mosime (61) Lebogang Maruapula (44), Jappie De Beer (31), Tshepiso De Beer (44), Koketso Tladi (33), Israel Motlashuping (43) and Emmanuel Makoloi (33) and Gaolahle Kenosi (35), were arrested in Wolmaranstad, Jouberton and Vryburg.  

The North West police spokesperson, Brig Sabata Mokgwabone said at this stage, only Kenosi has been granted R10 000 bail. Mokgwabone said the case against all accused was postponed to 2 and 3 May 2024, for bail application.

“They were arrested by the multi-disciplinary team entailing Organised Crime, Commercial Crime, Crime Intelligence and Public Order Police (POP) during a takedown operation, on Monday night, 15 April 2024.

“The accused were nabbed in connection with robbery, fraud and kidnapping cases during the termination of the Robocop project that commenced in 2021. The project was registered following incidents wherein victims from different provinces opened cases after either being defrauded, robbed or kidnapped by members of a syndicate that operated in Klerksdorp, Wolmaranstad, Schweizer-Reneke and Huhudi.

“As part of committing the crimes, the syndicate would advertise a Toyota Quantum on Facebook. Upon getting calls from potential buyers, the suspects would arrange meetings for viewing and test driving of the vehicle. The suspects would further request the victim to bring along cash for payment,” he said. 

Mokgwabone further said some of the suspects who are part of the syndicate, would appear during the transaction and rob the unsuspecting victims of their cash and other valuables. He added that, in instances where victims agreed to do electronic transfer, the suspects would withdraw the money immediately and disappear without delivering the vehicle. 

“Undercover investigations led to the gathering of evidence and registration of 27 case dockets, which linked the suspects with the crimes,” said Mokgwabone. 

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, applauded all the units for their patience and commitment, which led to the arrest of the suspects who have been conning unsuspecting citizens.

Ward councillor shot dead, manhunt launched

A manhunt has been launched for suspects linked to a ward councillor’s murder in Rustenburg on Friday. The ward councillor, Poppy Morapedi (54) at Rustenburg Local Municipality, was allegedly walking home with her cousin from the shop in Photsaneng village, outside Rustenburg when the atrocity happened. 

The North West police spokesperson, Brig Sabata Mokgwabone said Morapedi and her cousin were approaching the gate when one of the four unknown men who were following them, got closer and allegedly fired two shots. Mokgwabone said the victim’s cousin ran into the yard and screamed for help.  

“As a result, the victim’s brother got out of the house and spotted the suspects running away and eventually fled from the place with a BMW vehicle. Morapedi, who was allegedly shot below the left ear and forehead, was declared dead by Emergency and Medical Services (EMS).

“The motive of the incident is yet to be established and investigations are underway. No arrest has been effected,” he said.

A murder case against a convicted rapist and alleged murderer, Bakang Katong postponed

A murder case against alleged murderer and convicted rapist, Bakang Katong (32) and his co-accused, Thabang Lenyai (23) and Katlego Mosimege (31), and Phenyo Katong (34), has been postponed to 19 June 2024. The accused persons were nabbed two years ago for allegedly killing Thabiso Mothibedi (35) in cold blood.

This comes after they accused Mothibedi of stealing R20 000 cash and cigarettes worth R600 from Katong’s house in Manthe village, near Taung.

The North West police spokesperson, Capt Sam Tselanyane said the preliminary investigation revealed that on 29 April 2022, the deceased was at Longaneng village in Taung, when the accused fetched and ferried him back to Manthe village.

“Upon arrival, the deceased was allegedly chained to a generator and assaulted. After the assault, the victim was reportedly transported to a local clinic by the accused, however, he was declared dead upon arrival. The accused were arrested and charged with murder,” Tselanyane said.

On 1 May 2022, the community members were up in arms and torched three houses and a bakkie belonging to Katong’s family. 

Meanwhile, the court heard that there was a letter from the community members requesting that the murder case be transferred to the North West High Court in Mahikeng owing to its nature, however, that was not entertained.

It is alleged that the state is set to call seven witnesses, while the accused persons will call four witnesses. There were also allegations that the accused persons intended to plead guilty. However, it is yet unknown if that is still their intention.

Five suspects in court for kidnapping, house robbery

Five Suspects have been arrested for house robbery, kidnapping, extortion and unlawful possession of firearms in Stilfontein on 26 April 2024. 

The suspects were arrested during the multi-disciplinary team comprising of Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Detectives and Hostage Negotiators, Khuma Detectives, Provincial Crime Intelligence, Potchefstroom Flying Squad, District Illicit Mining Task Team, Klerksdorp Tactical Response Team (TRT), as well as Harmony Gold and BIU Security employees. 

The North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the arrests stem from an incident wherein, four armed men allegedly stormed into a house in Extension 6, Khuma Township on Thursday evening, 25 April 2024. Mokgwabone further said the suspects allegedly threatened the mother, then robbed her of R6 500 cash and took her son (19)’s cell phone.

“Furthermore, the son was kidnapped and put in the family’s silver Toyota Corolla, which they also used to flee from the scene. Soon after the incident was reported to the police, the suspects used the son’s cell phone to call the family demanding ransom. 

“With the involvement of hostage negotiators, a drop-off point was agreed upon after the suspects reduced the ransom amount. The team tactically kept an observation until a man was allegedly spotted walking from a panel beat workshop, then took the money and ran back,” he said.  

Mokgwabone added that, the police finally arrested two suspects and recovered the state money and seized a silver Volkswagen GTI suspected to have been used during the commission of the crimes. He said the preliminary investigations led the police to Extension 3, Alabama Township in Klerksdorp, where two men got out of a white Toyota Camry and ran away when they saw the police. 

“However, the police chased and apprehended the pair after one of them was shot on the leg. The kidnapping victim’s cell phone was discovered in the vehicle, while he (the victim) was found unharmed in the boot of the Camry. 

“The injured suspect was taken to hospital, where he is under police guard. Investigations further led the police to a house in Extension 13, Kanana Township in Orkney, where two 9mm Glock pistols and a 38 special revolver, all with serial numbers filed off, were seized,” said Mokgwabone. 

He said the suspect was arrested for unlawful possession of firearms. Mokgwabone said moreover, the family’s Toyota Corolla was found abandoned near Rex Flats at Extension 2 in Jouberton Township, Klerksdorp. 

“Three Mozambicans and two South Africans aged between 29 and 38, are expected to appear in the Stilfontein and Orkney Magistrate’s Courts on 29 April 2024. The police are also verifying the legal status of Mozambican nationals in the country,” said Mokgwabone.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, lauded the police for working around the clock to arrest the suspects, reunite the kidnapped victim with the family. Kwena also lauded the police for confiscating illegal firearms that are often used to commit violent and serious crimes.

Off duty police officer shot dead, suspects nabbed

Two suspects aged 40 and 44 were arrested in connection with the murder of the late Constable Mogoro Clement Makola (31). Makola was allegedly shot and killed in Lekgalong village, near Marikana in Rustenburg on Monday evening.

It is alleged that the late Makola who was declared dead on arrival at Kanana Clinic after being shot several times, was laid to rest in Jane Furse, Limpopo Province on Saturday.

The North West police spokesperson, Brig Sabata Mokgwabone said the suspects, aged 40 and 44, were arrested in Ramochana village, outside Rustenburg on Friday during a crime intelligence-driven operation by Brits Trio Task Team and Marikana Visible Policing. 

“This comes after Brits Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), provided the Investigating Officer with information after one of the suspects was identified through fingerprints. 

“The police arrested the first suspect at a liquor restaurant and allegedly implicated his accomplice, who was also arrested at the same place. On further questioning by the Investigating Officer, the suspect took the police to a house where a 9mm firearm with obliterated serial number, a magazine and four ammunition were found,” he said.

Mokgwabone said the suspects, who are both Mozambican foreign nationals, are expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on 29 April 2024, for murder. He said the case is now investigated by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI). 

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, extolled all members and units involved, including the Hawks for their determination and collaborative efforts, to ensure the arrest of the suspects.
