Two men nabbed for being in possession of copper cable worth R650 000

By OBAKENG MAJE

Two men who were arrested for theft and possession of copper cable are expected to appear at Zeerust Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. Bonang Jankie Madisakwane (37) and Paul Tlelimo (37), were arrested by the Zeerust Visible Policing Members along R49 road near Lekubu village, in Zeerust on 23 March 2024.

They initially appeared before the Zeerust Magistrate’s Court on 25 and 27 March 2024. However, their case was postponed to 4 April 2024, for formal bail application.

The police were allegedly conducting patrol when they spotted a white Audi vehicle with Gauteng Province (GP) registration number.

The North West police spokesperson, Lieutenant Col Amanda Funani said: “The vehicle was searched together with the three occupants. During the search, the police found two plastic bags full of copper cable, a roll of copper cable all worth R650 000, two back packs, side cutter, spanners, knives and pliers.

“The suspects were arrested after failing to account for the possession, but the third one who is alleged to be a Lesotho foreign national, fled from the scene to evade arrest.

“The preliminary investigations conducted after the arrest positively linked the copper cable with a case of theft registered at Nietverdiend. Madisakwane was further linked to a case of theft allegedly committed in Jacobsdal in the policing precinct of Ottoshoop,” she said.

She further said Tlelimo, who is foreign national from Lesotho, was charged for contravening the provisions of the Immigration Act, 2002, after failing to prove his legal status in the country.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, hailed the police for their vigilance, which resulted in the success.

Church members robbed of their valuables in Klerksdorp

By OBAKENG MAJE

The Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) in the North West has condemned the robbery during which congregants were allegedly robbed of their valued possessions at a church in Y100 Section, Jouberton Township, outside Klerksdorp on Thursday night. It is alleged that a church gathering was stormed by five unknown gunmen wearing balaclavas.

The North West police spokesperson, Lieutenant Col Amanda Funani said, a church member was allegedly outside and on the phone when balaclava wearing suspects pointed him with firearms and instructed him to get inside the church.

Funani said the suspects then ordered the congregants to lie down. She further said they allegedly searched and robbed them of cash, handbags and cell phones before fleeing from the scene on foot.

“The police were called and a charge of business robbery was opened. The police request anyone who may have information that can assist in the investigations to contact the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Bantjies on 082 568 6086 or Crime Stop on ‪‪‪‪08600 10111.

“Anonymous tip-offs can also be communicated via the MySAPS App on one’ smartphone,” she said.

Meanwhile, the MRM provincial convenor, Lesiba Kgwele said, the civil society led movement promoting the charter of positive values, including ethical and moral leadership, described the brazen robbery not only as a disgrace, but a barbaric act that has defiled the sanctity of Good Friday as well as the Passover weekend.

Kgwele said that opportunistic crimes of this nature targeted at church gatherings and other places of worship, are threatening congregants’ constitutional right of freedom of assembly.

“No one will be safe until the marauding heartless gang is behind bars. We therefore call on our communities to assist police, who have launched a manhunt in pursuit of the robbers in their investigations.

“We also appeal to communities to unite in action against the cycle of violence and gangsterism prevalent in the area by reclaiming their activism in order to promote and harness collective responsibility among communities within the spirit of Ubuntu,” he said.

Kgwele further said the effort to tackle the scourge of gangsterism in Matlosana must be bolstered and a strong partnership with the communities established in order to restore the rule of law, as well as residents’ confidence in the criminal justice system.

Naledi Ingwane (28), Johannes Selwane (54), Raymond Mokgobatlou (54), and Aron Matlala (56), allegedly robbed a retail shop in Coligny after pointing staff members with firearms on 25 February 2024.

The North West police spokesperson, Lieutenant Col Amanda Funani said, the accused allegedly took cash, cell phones worth R300 000 and other valuables such as laptop before fleeing the scene. Funani said the suspects were allegedly driving in a Toyota Quantum vehicle during the business robbery.

“However, they were cornered and arrested along the R104 road on 18 March 2024, by Marikana police, who were conducting routine patrols. This comes after the police spotted a suspicious Toyota Quantum, which was driving from Rustenburg to Pretoria direction.

“They stopped it for a search and firearms and different registration number plates were found in the vehicle, which was circulated and positively linked to the Coligny business robbery,” she said.

Funani further said the suspects were arrested and charged for business robbery and unlawful possession of firearms. She added that the suspects briefly appeared before Coligny Magistrate’s Court on 25 March 2024, but their matter was postponed to 3 April 2024, for formal bail application.
