Khune released from hospital

Posted: 2012-03-29 08:38

KickOff.com has been informed that Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is “fine” after suffering a moderate concussion on Wednesday.

Khune clashed heads with Thamsanqa Gabuza of Golden Arrows in the 63rd minute when he came off his line for a cross.

The Bafana Bafana goalkeeper was unable to recover and had to be replaced by Arthur Bartman after a lengthy stoppage, which culminated with the referee adding eleven minutes of injury time.

He was taken to hospital, but he was later released to join his teammates at the team’s hotel.

The Amakhosi skipper received some stitches to his lower lip and he is expected to undergo a Neurological assessment – which will involve the doctor testing the functioning of his nervous system – when the team returns to Jozi from Durban.

Arrows and Chiefs played to a goalless draw.

The top scorers list has had a bit of a reshuffle, and with eight matches left to play this season things are getting interesting.

Edward Manqele, Katlego Mphela and Siyabonga Nomvete lead the pack, with Benni McCarthy, David Mathebula, Eleazar Rodgers, and Lehlohonolo Majoro close behind them.

Manqele has hopped to the top of the pile with his goal against Orlando Pirates last night – his second against the Buccaneers in a week.

The Free State Stars man got his first goal eight minutes into his debut, in Ea Lla Koto’s opening match of the season back in August. Then followed a three-month dry spell, before a burst of goals that has had fans sitting up and taking notice.

Manqele has been on fire this month, scoring six goals in six matches (three in the Nedbank Cup), but the 24-year-old has been in blistering form since November, with 10 goals in 13 League matches.

If he continues the run of form he’s been on in March – with a goal a game – he should finish the season with a respectable 19 goals. Not bad for a striker many news sites still think is called ‘Mnqele’.

Snapping at Manqele’s heels are Katlego Mphela and Siyabonga Nomvete on 10 goals each.

Mphela has just one goal this year, however, and it looks possible his Mamelodi Sundowns teammate Nyasha Mushekwi, on seven goals, could overtake him. The Zimbabwean has scored two League goals since the middle of February, and eight in the Nedbank Cup (including six in Downs’ 24-0 demolishing of Powerlines FC).

Nomvete’s scoring boots have also cooled recently. ‘Bhele’ has scored just twice this year, while his Moroka Swallows teammate David Mathebula has got four this year, and eight in total.

Benni McCarthy is also on eight goals in 16 League appearances for Pirates, but he has started scoring more regularly and has five goals since the League’s restart in February.

Despite Santos’ struggles at the bottom of the table, Eleazar Rodgers has managed to rack up eight goals, with four this year – including a brace in the Cape side’s 3-0 win over Pirates.

And Kaizer Chiefs’ fans hope will have to be pinned to Lehlohonolo Majoro, who also has four this year – not including his goal against Cape Town All Stars in the Nedbank Cup. Majoro has been banging the goals in fairly regularly, but he will need to pick up the pace to become a serious contender for top scorer.

Top scorers list
Edward Manqele 11
Katlego Mphela 10
Siyabonga Nomvete 10
Benni McCarthy 8
David Mathebula 8
Eleazar Rodgers 8
Lehlohonolo Majoro 8
