Search off for missing illegal miners

Johannesburg – Rescue workers on Sunday night ended their search for illegal miners who had been trapped in a disused gold mine shaft in Benoni, on the East Rand.

After 11 of the illegal miners were rescued, the others refused to come to the surface, reportedly fearing arrest.

Initial reports had suggested that there were as many as 200 people trapped in the shaft.

“The rescue operation was carried out to completion.

“We are not going to resume tomorrow,” Rogger Mamaila, a local municipal emergency and rescue services official, told AFP.

It is not known how many are still in the shaft.

“Some of those who came out were dehydrated, but in good spirits,” emergency responder Kobus Du Toit told AP.

They were believed to have been trapped since Saturday morning and police patrolling in the area heard their screams for help, Sapa reported.

Rescue teams arriving at the scene were able to speak to about 30 miners near the top of the old shaft, whose entrance was covered by a large rock.

They said as many as 200 others were trapped further down a steep tunnel at the mine.

Illegal mining remains a serious concern, despite progress in curbing it, the mineral resources department said in a statement.

Some analysts say the problem could increase if legal mines close or downsize, forcing skilled workers who have lost their jobs to turn to illegal activities.

Tando Mabunu-Mandela had reportedly set her sights on the money as she and Mandla Mandela were married in community of property in 2004.

Mabunu-Mandela claims she is entitled to half of Mandla’s assets. Her lawyer, Wesley Hayes, said they would be looking at the trust that holds the money to see what it says about Mandla Mandela’s inheritance.

“For now, we’re continuing with the divorce proceedings,” Hayes told the newspaper.

Mandela did not respond to requests for comment.

The Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Family Trust would decide whether Mandla should receive the capital and interest.

The pair had been embroiled in divorce proceedings since 2009. In court papers, Mabuna-Mandela says Mandla earns R700 000 a year as an MP, R800 000 a year from a freight company, and has more than R5 million in bank accounts.

Mandla declared in the parliamentary register that he has shares and interests in eight companies, including Sekunjalo Investment Holdings, which owns Independent Newspapers, according to the newspaper.

Pretoria – South Africa’s government could be in for a major face-lift after it emerged that sensitive discussions within the ANC are under way to appoint two deputy presidents.

According to the Sunday Times, such changes would pave the way for Baleka Mbete to return to the executive. Mbete, the party’s national chairperson, has already accepted the nomination to become an MP. It is understood that she is being touted for the new position.

President Jacob Zuma plans to appoint ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa as his first deputy if the ANC wins the 7 May elections. According to a senior ANC source, Mbete’s role would be to focus on governance while Ramaphosa would assist Zuma with the running of the country.

However, such a move would require an amendment to the constitution and the agreement of opposition parties to achieve a two-thirds majority.
