Taung Lyricist Lepara pulverizes his way to success

Taung-Hip Hop is a music genre that consists of stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted.

South African Hip Hop artists have formed part of the world where they developed as part of hip hop society, culture, a subculture which is defined by four key stylistic elements: Mcing/rapping, Djing/scratching, breadancing and grafting writing.

Letlhogonolo Donald Motseeng could not hold his excitement and showed great pleasure when talking about the music he loves and adores.

Even though Tloks Lepara as Letlhogonolo Moeetseng is affectionately known in music circles started off as a Kwaito artist, he finally realised his touch in hip hop.

“I started my music career back in 2000; I was in Grade 7 by then. I did not take my music career very serious as it was more fun of it. I later moved to high school at Joseph Saku in Magogong village, West of Taung and that’s where I took my music serious” Lepara said.

Lepara was born 26 years ago in Itsoseng, near Mahikeng but moved to Magogong village in Taung.

A 26 year-old artist attended school in Magogong and later on went to finish his high school at Saku.

“Back in 14 February 2001, our school was celebrating a Valentine’s Day and there were lots and lots of activities. I decided to perform a song by Kwaito sensation, Mzambiya called Melesenzeni, and everyone was so blissful and beaming” he said.

The euphoric performance by Tloks Lepara left everyone wanting for more. He was also advised by his class teacher to take his music career very serious and prompted Lepara to writes his own songs.

The group called “Ruff Necks” was born after Lepara, his friend and cousin came together and formed the group.

They entered the music competition called “Taung Local Pops” which they reached the final and where eventually eliminated by winners.
Tloks Lepara packed his bags and headed for “The City of Gold” Johannesburg in search of greener pastures.

“In 2006,I moved to Johannesburg to record a demo CD.I was still doing Kwaito music by then. I was also doing Acting and Dancing. I started with Motswako/Hip Hop career, and was fortunate enough to meet Hidden Force in Thokoza township, East Rand where I was residing” said Taung Motswakolista.

“Same year I went to a Youth Centre in the area and joined a local group that were doing all activities including music. In my first week I saw some guys battling out and I jumped in, rapped in Tswana. Amazingly, I was approached by two guys afterwards and propelled me to be part of their group. We formed a group called 3XL” he outlines.

The newly group never looked back and went straight to the studio for recording; they met the likes of Kwesta, TeePee, Mathematics and K-Master. They did so well and shared stage with the likes of Malaika, Mafikozolo, Kwesta, TeePee, F-Eezy, Obita and Dj Sbu…the list is endless.

“I decided to move to Soweto back in 2008 where I started with my solo project. I never looked back and met with Dem Goddo, Pricksta, MOT and Letlapa, then our first lady called Los. We formed the group called Sechaba sa Mahipi. In 2013, I recorded my single called Do It For Banyana” Lepara said.

This charismatic Motswako artist from Taung is releasing his long-awaited first album, and all indications are that his decade-long journey to find his niche in the local music industry finally starting to bear fruit.

Tloks Lepara says of the 15-track CD: “My album is almost done, only two songs left to make a 15 track album which will be released soon titled Ka Nkanee loosely translated By Force. I called it Ka Nkanee because I belief God gave me power and strength to push harder”

The album titled “Ka Nkanee” is a metaphor that reflects the ups and downs Lepara faced on his road success. He said the album will communicate the message of Hope and Inspiration to those who follow in his footsteps.

The first single, “Do It For Banyana” is doing great on various radio stations. It was also nominated for spot number 78 last year on 31 December on Motsweding FM’s Top 100. The single hit also claimed position 5 on Vaaltar Fm’s Top 30.

Tloks Lepara said he would love to see himself as one of the best hip hop artists in the country and running his own entertainment company.

“I would like to develop up and coming artists in the future, especially those who come from Taung. And I believe education is the only key to success, so my advice to the youngsters is, go to school and equip yourself with knowledge too so that you can be able to fall back on something when things does not turn up the way one planned” concludes Taung hip hop artist.-TDN

Three die in Rustenburg crash

Rustenburg-North West police are investigating the deaths of three children after they were allegedly killed by a train at Zinniaville, near Rustenburg.

The atrocity took place on Friday at around 14:30.

Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said a Toyota Avanza with 12 kids inside approached the railway line were other cars stopped to give the right of way for an oncoming. Train.

“The Toyota Avanza driver allegedly decided to overtake the other cars and try to beat the train. The car got stucked on the railway line and the train ploughs into it” he said.

The train allegedly dragged the car few metres and a 8 year-old boy died on the scene.

“Other victims were taken to Job Tabane hospital for medical attention and two more kids were allegedly certified dead on their arrival” Mokgwabone outlines.

The police said a case of culpable homicide and reckless driving were launched against the driver.

DA is the devil- Gigaba


Cape Town – Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba used a government dialogue with Cape Town residents on Thursday to take a dig at the DA and its policies.
“They are not the devil’s brothers. They are not the devil’s relatives. They are the devils themselves,” he told the packed OR Tambo Hall in Khayelitsha.

“And so our modern-day devils, two-legged as they are, are liars and cannot face the truth.”

He said the truth was that the ANC had created conditions in the country that showed “we have a good story to tell”.

He was speaking at an event that had been billed as a dialogue between his department, Eskom and Transnet, and residents.

Both Eskom and Transnet gave brief presentations on their willingness to involve residents in various projects and feedback on improvements for their areas.

Residents were given an opportunity to ask questions before Gigaba’s speech.

A large portion of the crowd was dressed in the black, green and gold of the ANC. The various entertainment acts also waxed lyrical about the party and got the crowd to join in ANC songs.

Gigaba was applauded for speaking out on the DA’s policies on land, saying the party wanted land to remain in the hands of a white minority.

“We have to vote because they don’t want us to change the willing-buyer, willing-seller principle and replace it with the just and equitable compensation principle.

“This is what these coming elections are about. This is what everything we are doing on a daily basis is about.”

Party criticised

He criticised the party for its claim of creating six million “real” jobs.

“They have not been able to build one real job in the Western Cape. How will they manage to build six million real jobs anywhere in South Africa?” he asked.

Gigaba said it was not right to call Eastern Cape residents living in Cape Town “refugees”, referring to a comment made in the past by Western Cape premier and DA leader Helen Zille.

He said many people had to support more than two people and sent their salaries back to the rural areas of the Eastern Cape to feed their families.

“These are the same workers who are subsequently called refugees in the Western Cape, in the country of their birth, in the country they died defending.

“This is your country. You cannot be told where to go.”

Gigaba said the ANC was a party of the future, not a party of the past or present.

Over the last five years, the government had spent R1trn building new infrastructure, which had resulted in the emergence of new industries and factories, he said.

“We’re seeing state-owned companies investing more money into skills development… for a change, we’re beginning to see state-owned companies beginning to increase their investment into the economy.”

Players out to impress at Banyana Banyana selection camp


Johannesburg-Forty-three players will be looking to impress new Banyana Banyana coach Vera Pauw at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria on Thursday afternoon.

The Netherlands-born coach is in the process of building a squad with players who will represent the country at the 2014 edition of the CAF African Women’s Championship set for Namibia in October this year.

The Sasol-sponsored Senior Women’s National team completed their first training session on Monday afternoon.

With a mix of regular and new faces, Pauw said she was impressed by the commitment displayed at their first training session. She said she was now faced with a task of selecting the core of the squad that will face Comoros in a single round robin format CAF African Women Championship qualifiers scheduled for the end of May 2014.

“It’s fantastic to see the mobility and skills that the players have. We worked on the basic principles of occupying the pitch and trying to get the players to benefit from each other’s qualities and we could see improvements as the training session progressed. First thing is to structure the team. We want them to adopt the behaviours that we took them through so they can become second nature to the players and we can then start build on from there.

“Another aspect that we’ve focussed on is their fitness levels, which so far have not been disappointing. As we progress with the training sessions, we expect them to get sharper and stronger plus get better actions in the game,” said Pauw.

The Banyana Banyana defence sees the return of Amanda Sister and former captain, Simphiwe Dludlu and their experience will be beneficial to the national team.

Several new faces in the squad include players who were part of the South African U17 Women’s National team (Bantwana) that participated in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago in 2010.

“We must focus on the task at hand of qualifying for the CAF African Women’s Championship. Then we will shift our focus on to the actual competition set for Namibia in October as we look to get the team within the top three that will qualify for the World Cup,” said Pauw.

The selection and training camp will conclude on Sunday, 23 March.

Premier Modise: North West flood damage estimated at R100m


North West-The reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure damaged by floods across the North West Province that the preliminary assessment estimated at over R100 million will require emergency funding to be fast tracked, North West  Premier Thandi Modise  confirmed on Thursday.

“Though the final assessment has not been concluded, repairs to the damaged infrastructure and enhancement of the design and structural quality of the damaged infrastructure such as houses, bridges, roads and culverts has already commenced,” Premier Modise underscored.

Modise said that lack of spatial planning, municipal by-laws that result in uncoordinated and unplanned human settlements on low lying areas and river banks, poor drainage system in urban areas had increased vulnerability and magnitude of flooding.

Eleven lives were confirmed lost due to sporadic flood disaster incidents as from early February to date. Six of the fatalities were reported in Madibeng and Moses Kotane Local Municipalities in the Bojanala Platinum District while five were reported in Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality in Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District.  

“Kagisano –Molopo was the worst affected by flooding with 232 houses affected 25 of which had collapses , 280 kilometers of road and 5 culverts were damaged in the municipality. Three bridges were also damaged in Moses Kotane and two in Madibeng Local Municipalities.
In some areas, schools were inaccessible due to damaged infrastructure” Modise said.

Modise said that though relief efforts such as relief of social distress grants, tents, blankets, food parcels and mattresses were rolled out, there is a need for public awareness campaigns on rainwater harvesting initiatives to be intensified in schools and vulnerable communities.
The determination as to whether it will be necessary for the province to be declared a disaster area would depend on the final consolidated assessment report to be finalised in the coming week.

The Madibeng Local Municipality has already submitted a request to Bojanala Platinum District Municipality to declare it a disaster areas in terms of section 54 and 55 of the Disaster Management Act.

“The need for municipalities to incorporate disaster risk reduction into their development planning has been identified by the Provincial Disaster Management Centre as a crucial medium to long term intervention” she said.

The premier said the centre will continue to monitor the weather pattern and issue early warnings to all relevant stakeholders including communities where necessary.-TDN

ANCYL: Madonsela must resign


Johannesburg – The ANC Youth League on Thursday called on Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to resign following her report into the upgrades at President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead.

Speaking at Luthuli House in Johannesburg, the league said Madonsela’s report was “a clear sign” she was an “opposition puppet”.

“Madonsela has been frequenting DA tea parties during her Nkandla investigation. She needs scrutiny,” reporters at the league’s briefing quoted it as saying.

quoted the league as saying: “We want the incoming government to probe Madonsela’s credibility. She must step down before 2016.”

The youth league’s view goes against that of its parent body which said that it did not intend to undermine the validity of the protector’s report.

“There is no such intention within the ANC,” party secretary general Gwede Mantashe said.  

The African National Congress was “relieved” that the report had “finally been released to the public”.

But the timing of the release of the report remained a concern “in terms of the disruptive effect” it would have on all political parties in their campaigning ahead of general elections in May, said Mantashe. News24

Mine worker assaulted, house set alight in Rustenburg

Rustenburg-North West police are investigating a case of assault and arson after a 38 year-old man was allegedly assaulted.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said a man was allegedly asleep with his girlfriend in their shack in Thekwane at around 23:30pm on Wednesday when four unknown men pounced on them.

“Four unknown men allegedly entered the shack of a 38 year-old man who works at Anglo American Platinum mines as a Rock Drill Operator and assaulted and set his shack alight afterwards” brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

The assault might have been encouraged by an ongoing Amcu strike.

The man was assaulted along with his 38 year-old girlfriend and the perpetrators warned him about going to work will they are on strike.

“It is alleged that four unknown men arrived at the shack where the victims were sleeping. The suspects allegedly accused the man that despite being warned repeatedly not to go to work, he is still doing so. The suspects allegedly assaulted the victims and set the shack alight” Ngubane said.  

The property involved is estimated to the value of R52 000.  

Both victims were treated by paramedics at the scene for injuries sustained as result of the incident.   

“This incident of violence is condemned in the strongest possible terms, especially in view of the fact that AMCU is insisting that the strike is non-violent and their members are innocently being arrested by the SAPS. This incident once again proofs that workers are being intimidated and become victims of crime if they go to work” he concludes.-TDN

Premier Modise condemns torching of miner’s shack and assaults


North West Premier Thandi Modise has condemned in the strongest terms
possible the torching of a shack and assault of a mineworker and his
girlfriend in Thekwana outside Rustenburg for allegedly not supporting the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) strike.

Premier Modise has called on police not to leave any stone unturned to
bring those responsible to book and on members of the community to
assist unmask those behind the spate of violence and intimidation.

“Such atrocious and barbaric acts underline the need to end the
protracted strike,” Modise said.

According to police, the incident involving the mineworker affiliated
to the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) occurred between midnight
and 1:00 am this morning.
The miner employed at Siphumelele 1 Shaft was allegedly assaulted for
