28 September 2026 – A man (50) has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for raping his partner’s daughter (17) in Rooiwinkel, near Okiep. The incident occurred on 28 November 2021, when the accused allegedly supplied the victim with alcohol before driving her to a secluded area, where he raped her despite her resistance.
The Namakwa District police spokesperson, Captain Ivan Magerman said the victim managed to escape and immediately reported the incident to her family, which led to the arrest of the accused. Magerman said in addition to the 10-year prison sentence, the court declared the man unfit to possess a firearm and unsuitable to work with children. His name was also entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
“The conviction demonstrated the importance of thorough investigations and dedicated detective work, particularly in cases involving vulnerable victims. The SAPS remains committed to ensuring that victims of sexual offences receive the necessary support and that perpetrators are brought before the courts.
“The communitymembers have been urged to break the silence, report incidents of abuse and work together with law enforcement agencies to protect vulnerable members of society,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Namakwa District Police Commissioner, Brigadier Schalk Andrews, commended Warrant Officer Ayanda Phillips of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Springbok for his meticulous investigation and commitment to bringing the case to a successful conclusion.
