Gomes appointed to the FIFA Referees Committee

5 October 2025- South African Football Association (SAFA) Referees Committee chairman, Victor Gomes, has been appointed to the FIFA Referees Committee. Gomes was a highly respected referee until his retirement after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

He has transferred his skills to various refereeing structures around the world. Gomes told http://www.safa.net that he was happy to continue contributing to the game wherever he is required.

“I am happy to contribute to the game on the continent and to the betterment of African refereeing,” he said. “Thank you to FIFA, CAF and SAFA for entrusting me with this big responsibility,” he said.

Gomes also serves as a FIFA Referees development officer and assessor, VAR and Technical Instructor, CAF Referees Committee vice-chairman and IFAB Technical Advisory Panel member.

SAFA president Dr Danny Jordaan applauded Gomes as he joins a committee that is chaired by highly respected former referee Pierluigi Collina. Jordaan said he is pleased to congratulate Gomes on this new journey.

“We look forward to following him on this new chapter,” he said.

SAFA continues to be well represented on various structures of the game on the globe. Dr Jordaan has been appointed to the FIFA Men’s National Teams Competitions Committee. This Committee is regarded as the most important in FIFA as it oversees all FIFA men’s tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup, FIFA U20 World Cup, FIFA U17 World Cup, Men’s Olympic Football Tournament, FIFA Futsal World Cup, and the FIFA Arab Cup.

Meanwhile, SAFA Chief Medical Officer Doctor Thulani Ngwenya is serving as a Doping Control Officer (DOC) and Sample Collection for the duration of the FIFA Under-20 Men’s World Cup that is currently underway in Chile. The well-respected SAFA official is serving as a Doping Control Officer at another major tournament, and he is based in Rancagua, Chile, and the Estadio El Teniente is the main venue for his assignment.

SAPS send a team of investigators to France amid Mthethwa’s death

3 October 2025- Following the tragic and untimely death of South African Ambassador to France and former Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, the Minister of Police, Prof Firoz Cachalia, has been advised by the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola that, following consultation with the relevant authorities, a decision has been taken to deploy a team of five seasoned officers from the SAPS to France.

Cachalia said the team will be led by Major General Maqhashalala, the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection in the Western Cape. He further said the deployed team will work closely with French law enforcement authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding Mthethwa’s death are thoroughly and transparently investigated.

“This collaborative effort aims to support the ongoing inquest and uphold the principles of justice and accountability. The deployment of these investigators reflects our commitment to ensuring that every effort is made to establish the full facts surrounding this tragedy.

“We will offer all necessary support to our counterparts in France and remain in close contact with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) throughout the process,” said Cachalia.

He also conveyed his heartfelt condolences, expressing that they are devastated by the sudden and untimely passing of Mthethwa, a dedicated public servant and patriot who served our nation with distinction in various capacities.

Cachalia added that their thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.

Amajita beat New Caledonia in FIFA Under-20 World Cup game

3 October 2025- The South African U20 Men’s National Team, Amajita, got their 2025 FIFA U20 Men’s World Cup campaign back on track as they brushed aside New Caledonia 5-0 in their second match of the competition at Estadio El Teniente in Rancagua, Chile in the early hours of Friday morning (SA time). Following the 1-2 opening loss against France, coach Raymond Mdaka’s charges made amends with three first half goals and two on the other side of the break to remain in contention for a round of 16 qualification.

Defender Siviwe Nkwali headed in the first goal 25 minutes into the game before Shakeel April doubled the lead on the 34th minute mark from the penalty spot after forward Siviwe Magidigidi was fouled in the box. The latter, who was introduced into the starting line-up for the New Caledonia match, managed to get on the scoresheet a minute before the recess to give South Africa a comfortable 3-0 lead and also repay the faith of the coaches.

Amajita continued where they left off in the second half with Magidigidi grabbing his brace in the 52nd minute. Lazola Maku saved the best for last with a well-worked and well-taken team goal as the African Champions ran out convincing 5-0 winners. Mfundo Vilakazi, who was one of two changes in the starting line-up, was named Player of the Match.

They could have scored more but missed several chances, leaving Mdaka satisfied with the victory but also unhappy with some aspects of the game. So dominant was South Africa during the game that they had 32 shots (13 on target), compared to New Caledonia’s two (one on target).

“It’s a game that we wanted to win but also win with goals. We are not happy with the technical discipline of some of our players. We have our agreements, and they know how we’re supposed to play but somehow, we lost a number of opportunities to score.

“This is a team I think we should have scored even more than nine or 10 goals, which would have put us at an advantage when we go to the next game,” said Mdaka.

The result means the USA leads Group E with six points after they defeated a stubborn France 3-0 in an earlier match. South Africa is second on the table on three points but have a better goal difference, while the French are third, also on three points.

New Caledonia are yet to move on the points scoreboard. Amajita face the USA in the final group stage match on Sunday (5 October), while New Caledonia tackle young Les Bleues with a spot in the next round up for grabs – the Americans have no such worries as they have already progressed with one game to spare and will most likely be on the hunt for a top spot finish.

New Caledonia suffered a 9-1 loss against the USA in their first match of the competition and have conceded 14 goals in two matches.

Morweng welcomes the arrests of six police officers for various crimes

3 October 2025- The North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng said he welcomes the arrest of five police officers for alleged stock theft and possession of endangered animals. Morweng said detectives stationed in Vryburg, have appeared in court for allegedly stealing four sheep belonging to a local farmer.

He further said upon realising that four of his sheep are missing, the farmer checked the security cameras which then indicated the registration number of the vehicle in which apparently the stolen sheep were loaded. He added that investigations revealed that the vehicle belongs to Vryburg Detectives.

“Further investigation led the police to a house in Dithakwaneng village, outside Vryburg where a skinned carcass of a sheep was found.

“The three officers were then arrested alongside a local man at whose house the carcass was found. After appearing in court the three officers were granted

R1000 bail and the civilian was also released on R500,” said Morweng.

He said they will appear in court again on 11 November 2025. Morweng said in another unrelated matter, two officers stationed at Sun City Police Station, were arrested in an undercover operation in Pretoria for possession of endangered specifies.

“The two officers allegedly accompanied by two civilians were selling pangolins for R160 000. It was as they were concluding a deal with an alleged buyer when undercover officers pounced on them.

“Through arrest of police officers is regrettable this is nonetheless a further indication that no one is above the law. In order to clean the system and restore confidence of communities in law enforcement as a whole, we have to arrest those that contravene the law among our ranks,” he said.

Morweng said they welcome their arrest and applaud the police applying the law indiscriminately.

Broos announces Bafana squad for FIFA World Cup Qualifier clashes

3October 2025- Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has named his final squad for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda this month. Broos’ charges will be away to Zimbabwe at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban in the first FIFA World Cup qualifier on 10 October 2025.

The South African senior men’s national team will then host Rwanda in the last qualifier at the Mbombela Stadium, in Mpumalanga, on 14 October 2025.

Both matches will be played at 6pm.

Broos said the team is fully focused on the two matches and has put the ruling by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee a few days ago behind them. The Disciplinary Committee sanctioned the South African Football Association (SAFA) for erroneously fielding midfielder Teboho Mokoena during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Lesotho played on 21 March 2025.

The Bafana Bafana coach said the team will not need any motivation at the Moses Mabhida and Mbombela Stadiums.

“It is an extra motivation for me, and I will try to transfer it to the group (the whole team), even though I know that I do not have to because they will be ready for these two games,” he said.

Meanwhile, the team will assemble in Roodepoort on 6 October 2025, but remain in Johannesburg until Thursday. They will travel to Durban on Thursday morning ahead of Friday night’s match against Zimbabwe. Broos’ charges will then fly to Mbombela on Saturday morning to prepare for Tuesday’s final showdown against Rwanda.

The Belgian urged the supporters to come out in numbers and ensure full houses at the Moses Mabhida and Mbombela Stadiums. The Bafana Bafana coach said the team needs the 12th man in the stands to ensure that the players feel the love from all South Africans during this final lap of the qualifiers.

Collaborative effort yields forfeiture success

3 October 2025- A collaboration between Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation’s Priority Crime Specialised Investigation (PCSI) and National Prosecuting Authority’s Asset Forfeiture unit (AFU) bore fruits when the Northern Cape High Court sitting in Kimberley, granted the two government agencies a number of forfeiture orders against various law transgressors in the province, bringing to an end a successful month in terms of the number of orders issued in a single month.

The Hawks spokesperson in Northern Cape, Lieutenant Colonel Tebogo Thebe said during February 2024, police in Postmasburg arrested a suspect, after he sold what looked like tik and mandrax to the agent, R15 400 was seized and booked in SAP13. Thebe said a forfeiture order was granted after the two agencies applied on the basis of the funds being proceeds of crime. 

“The police in Roodepan received information about a person selling dagga at a nearby farm in March 2024, Police followed up on the information and found dagga and an amount of R18 674, the suspect was arrested and the dagga and the money were seized for further investigation. Court granted a forfeiture order of the said amount.

“In another incident, the police in Kuruman received information about a person attempting to privately sell five cows to one of the community members. The following day, the concerned community member tracked the cows at a nearby abattoir, police were called to the scene and the suspect was arrested resulting in his vehicle, an Isuzu LDV worth R130 000 being confiscated,” he said.

Thebe further said after an application was lodged with the court, a forfeiture order of R130 000 was granted for the vehicle. He added that the suspect was arrested for stock theft.

“Another Isuzu bakkie worth R80 000 was forfeited to the state after being found with stolen goats in Mothibistad rural areas during February 2025. SAPS members attached to Schmidtsdrift Station stopped a Tata bakkie towing a large trailer loaded with cattle.

“Officers requested the necessary transportation permits in terms of the law, the driver could not produce the necessary documents, the vehicle was then seized for further investigation resulting in the preservation order of the vehicle worth R280 000 being granted by the court. Video footage confirming the theft of the cattle was made available,” said Thebe.

Meanwhile, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head Major General Stephen Mabuela  said: “Our proactive measures have ensured that those who do wrong don’t get to enjoy the proceeds of crime, those who allow others to use their properties such as vehicles to commit crime will also lose them.”

Veteran Broadcaster Tim Modise to Deliver Public Lecture on Media and Cultural Identity in South Africa

3 October 2025- The North West University (NWU), through the Indigenous Language Media in Africa (ILMA) research niche area, in collaboration with the Tim Modise Foundation, will host a special public lecture. The lecture, titled: “Perspectives on the broadcast media as the cultural expression of the democratic South Africa”, will explore the powerful role of media in shaping cultural identity in the country’s democratic era.

The NWU Communications Manager (Mahikeng campus), Oscar Mosiane said, for Modise, this occasion represents a homecoming. Mosiane said his illustrious broadcasting career began at Radio Bop in Mahikeng before he rose to national prominence as an anchor of leading programmes such as Good Morning South Africa, Agenda, Lekgotleng le Modise, Modise ka 9, and the historic election broadcasts of 1994 and 1999.

“Over more than three decades, Modise has worked across multiple platforms including SABC TV and Radio, eNCA, Business Day TV, Radio 702, SAFM, Metro FM, BBC Radio, Soweto TV, M-Net Carte Blanche, and Radio Bop. He has received numerous accolades, including being named SABC Broadcaster of the Year (1991), his induction into the South African Radio Hall of Fame (2011), and the Reconciliation Award from the Institute of Reconciliation and Justice conferred by the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

“Internationally, he was honoured with the Human Rights Award by the Jaime Brunet Foundation at the University of Navarra in Spain. The event will take place at Building A1, Room 261, Mahikeng Campus, North West University on 6 October 2025 at 12pm,” he said.
