A human trafficking case against two Zimbabwean nationals postponed!

By OBAKENG MAJE

One of the prime suspects in a human trafficking case, Beaula Maruza (41), was denied bail today by the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court. Maruza and her co-accused, Tafadzwa Otis Nadakurwa (46), were arrested during a multi-disciplinary operation on 6 December 2023 for trafficking in-person allegations.

The Hawks spokesperson in Northern Cape, Warrant Officer Nomthandazo Mnisi said, two Zimbabwean nationals were allegedly seen boarding a bus in Midrand with 14 undocumented kids aged between 6 and 14. Mnisi further said the police were alerted to the incident by a vigilant passenger in a bus from Midrand in Johannesburg en route to Cape Town.

“The bus stopped in Kimberley and the passenger called an off-duty police officer, alerting the multi-disciplinary team for investigation and arrest. The suspects claimed to be taking the kids to their parents in Cape Town, however, this information could not be verified by the police.

“This led to the arrests and the victims were inspected. They looked hungry and were found to be dirty without any additional clothes or bags. The Provincial Trafficking in Persons rapid response team led by the Northern Cape Department of Social Development, was contacted to assist the victims with shelter and food,” said Mnisi.

She further said Nadakurwa has since been released on bail. Mnisi added that their case was postponed to 12 February 2024.

By OBAKENG MAJE

Two suspects arrested for double murder of initiates in Ntsweletsoku

By OBAKENG MAJE

Two men aged 19 and 21 are expected to appear before the Lehurutshe Magistrate’s Court on 15 January 2024 for murder. The suspects were arrested at Ntsweletsoku village, near Lehurutshe on Friday.

The North West police spokesperson, Brig Sabata Mokgwabone said the arrests came after a multi-disciplinary team comprising of Ngaka Modiri Molema District, Lehurutshe, Motswedi and Zeerust detectives and visible policing as well as Zeersut K9 made a follow up on two initiates, who were reported missing in Motswedi and Lehurutshe Police Stations in December 2023.

Mokgwabone said during the course of the investigations, the police found what appeared to be human skeleton bones in a plastic in the bushes, near Mosweu village.

“Further investigation into the matter, led to the arrest of the suspects, who were apparently in charge of the initiation school, where the boys allegedly died.

“The police investigations into the matter are underway and the police cannot rule out the possibility of linking the suspects to other cases, including contravention of the Customary Initiation Act, 2021,” he said.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, thanked the police for their tireless efforts to unmask and arrest those who transgress the law.

Motsweding FM sports presenter, Mosela Mokgosi ready for the bigger stage

Picture: Motsweding FM sports presenter, Mosela Irene Mokgosi/Facebook

By OBAKENG MAJE

Motsweding FM’s multi-award-winning sports presenter, Mosela Irene Mokgosi said, she is happy to finally find her niche within the sports fraternity, despite heavy criticisms. Recently, Mokgosi celebrated her achievements after she scooped the Best Sports Presenter of the Year award (Commercial) at the 2023 North West Media Awards (NWMA) and the Sports Journalist of the Year (Electronic) at 2023 North West Sports Awards (NWSA).

She originates from Tlapeng village, near Taung, and started her radio presenting journey at Vaaltar FM, which is a community radio station. Mokgosi further said she would always listen to Motsweding FM and Vaaltar FM presenters and mimicked how they presented.

“One day, I went to Mahikeng with Vaaltar FM presenters and it was fun. In 2004, one of the former presenters at Vaaltar FM, Amogelang Matuane recruited me. She said I do have a voice for radio. Even though I was reluctant, I said why not. So, in a nutshell, that is how my radio presenting journey started.

“In 2007, I received a life-changing call from the former Motsweding FM Station Manager, Sibongile Mtyali, who requested me to send her a demo doing sports. It was during the 2007 Rugby World Cup,” she said.

Mokgosi added that, even though she did not have vast experience in sports at the time, she sent the demo. She said she was over the moon when she was recruited by SABC-affiliated radio station, Motsweding FM.

“On 1 November 2007, I officially started working for Motsweding FM as a sports presenter. You would remember at that time, sport was male-dominated. However, I was fortunate enough to work with the likes of Oshebeng Koonyaditse, the late legendary Cebo Manyaapelo, and others.

“I also received unwavering support from my colleagues, friends, and family who believed in my craft. Believe me, when I say, nothing beats discipline, dedication, and determination, hence I managed to succeed and became the person that I am today.

“I remember one day, Manyaapelo said I am on the right track and he would die peacefully if he could see a woman making a mark across all sporting codes. On the other hand, Koonyaditse always wanted to see me doing soccer commentary,” said Mokgosi.

She said, however, she still has to fulfill that dream.

“I did not want to put myself under unnecessary pressure, then I decided to stick to what I’m good at. I would not want to feel like I’m thrown in the deep end. Funny enough, Koonyaditse still harbours that dream of me becoming a soccer commentator.

“I would not lie, I have received a fair share of criticisms in my career. However, I have always shut them down by my work. As a human being, you are the one who knows what you want and how badly you want it. So, work in silence and let your work do the talking,” she said.

Mokgosi also encouraged aspiring sports broadcasters, who would like to consider sports presenting as a career, to go to school and study media studies and journalism. She said that will prepare them to understand the media mechanisms better.

“Even though broadcasting is a competitive field, you can find success in the industry with a combination of the right education, experience, and passion. So, if you are passionate about sports and want to report on sports news and game results, then you may be considering a career as a sports broadcaster. Now, I would like to embark on television as a sports presenter or commentator,” she said.

Bafana Bafana camp hits by injuries ahead of AFCON

By OBAKENG MAJE

Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos has shared his thoughts on the injury concerns that have affected his team ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire. Broos said Mamelodi Sundowns FC and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, is currently being managed by the medical team due to a knee niggle, midfielder Themba Zwane took a knock on the knee a few days ago, while Mothobi Mvala had a groin injury.

“Mvala is still part of this team for now. I will not rule him out or think further until I have the full medical details from the team doctor. He is still a part of the AFCON-bound team. Mvala is the type of player that gives everything, both during a match and in practice.

“The above-mentioned players were not part of the South African senior men’s team that faced Lesotho in a preparation match at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, on Wednesday afternoon (10 January 2024),” he said.

Bafana Bafana team doctor, Dr Tshepo Molobi said: “As it is in any camp, we will always be faced with something and this is the nature of football when you’re dealing with athletes. In the case of Mvala, all medical assessments have been made and while we continue practicing caution with all and any injuries, there is no need to rule him out.

“He will travel with the team to Côte d’Ivoire and we as a medical team, will continuously monitor all injuries and niggles that need our care.

Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana played to a goalless draw against Lesotho on Wednesday.

The team departs from Johannesburg to Abidjan on Thursday 11 January 2024 and will make their residence in CAN Village in Korhogo their home from Friday.
