‘ANC condemns the unruly behaviour amid Tlokwe massacre’

BY REGINALD KANYANE

THE ANC in Dr Kenneth Kaunda district in North West said they condemned the actions of unruly individuals who took advantage of a peaceful march organised by Tlokwe residents on Friday.

Dr Kenneth Kaunda district regional chairperson, Itumeleng Mosala said they watched the history repeated itself when a group of unruly individuals ran on the rampage, trashing the streets in throughout the city under the pretext of demonstrating against the merger with Ventersdorp municipality.
“We must remember that not so long ago when Tlokwe community desired the apartheid name Potchefstroom to be changed to Tlokwe, the Democratic Alliance at the time, rented a crowd of loitering juveniles and passed them on as the voice of the people of Tlokwe in an attempt to frustrate the realisation of the wishes of the people,” he said.

Mosala said the DA was doing exactly what is known for. “It has organized surrogates to do its dirty work. We are aware of a media statement that preceded this march issued by a Tlokwe DA councilor, Hans Jurie Moolman wherein he intimated that they support the demonstration even if they do not support the violence. This makes one to wonder why Moolman was prompted to mention violence even before the march had begun,” he said.
According to Masala, the DA lives with the illusion that it is capable of governing Tlokwe. He said it cannot do so when there is unity among the people of Tlokwe and it uses surrogates to create division among the people.
“DA should feel shameful of itself for encouraging and preventing the ordinary people who have nothing, but only depend on waking every morning to go and work so as to be able to put bread on the table.

“They neither care about the education of the black child. The grades 12’s are currently preparing for exams and yet unprincipled politicians will not care to sacrifice their education for their selfish interests,” Mosala said.

However the DA in the province refutes the claims from the ANC and said the protests were influenced by the decision of amalgamation which left people discontented.

“We condemn the looting of buildings and violence during protests that escalated over the weekend. The vandalism and arson of the Venterdorp local municipal buildings on Friday, was a horrible result of the ANC government’s neglect and contempt for resident’s views which are opposed to the merger of Tlokwe and Ventersdorp municipalities,” Juanita Terblanche said.

She said the ANC government and the Demarcation Board have long given up in listening to Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp residents who clearly fear the amalgamation, but have no say in this critical decision.

“Participatory democracy and the values of people-centred government have been destroyed by the ANC in the North West. We are concerned that the Tlokwe and Ventersdorp municipality merger shows signs of mimicking the Khutsong and Matateile cross-border protests, where the government only really listened to grievances after residents had to turn violent to stop it. Today the ANC forces communities to turn violent before government listens,” Terblanche said.

The DA is trying to fight the matter in court and their case will be heard before the High Court in Pretoria on September 29 this year.

North West police said no one has been arrested in protests in Ventersdorp on Friday.

Police spokesperson, col Sabata Mokgwabone said: “No one has been arrested so far, but police investigations continue.”

The community allegedly reduced the municipality offices to ashes in protest and in Potchefstroom; the car belonging to SABC was pelted with stones by unruly individuals.

‘SANCO urges for urgent intervention’

MEC Removes stones

BY REGINALD KANYANE

South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in the North West province has appealed for urgent intervention to ensure that the Tlokwe/Ventersdorp demarcation conflict does not spiral out of control.

The provincial chairperson, Paul Sebegoe said: “The social gap that exists between government and communities should be narrowed through consultation to resolve the current impasse and find an amicable solution.”

He said they condemned violence and destruction of public properties that erupted on Friday in Venterdorp, Ikageng and Potchefstroom and appealed for calm and renewed constructive engagement.

“We should draw the lessons from similar confrontations that arrogance as well as denying residents participation and input into processes that are going to affect development of their communities will not advance representative and participatory democracy,” he added.

‘Cultural carnival will help in knowing your roots’

Mahumapelo.JPG

BY KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

The Bokone Bophirima Provincial Government said the cultural carnival will be spread across various municipalities in quest to encourage the people of the province to buy traditional and indigenous food and belongings. The acting provincial spokesperson, Brian Setswambung said the premier encouraged the Tlokwe community to gather sophisticated knowledge by participating in the event.

The event was hosted at Ikageng location in Potchefstroom on Saturday. Many people including local artists, came out in numbers to take part. The cultural carnival was also part of the ongoing Setsokotsane programme that seeks to integrate and accelerate service delivery to citizens of the province.

“The premier said the cultural diversity among the communities is a key. Human societies across the province need to develop rich sets of experiences and explanations relating to the environments they live in. Mahumapelo said the event will spread across the province. He further added that the knowledge encompasses the sophisticated arrays of information, understandings and interpretations that guide human societies across in their innumerable interactions and to cope with fluctuating environments,” Setswambung said.

He said indigenous people have broad knowledge of how to live sustainably, however, Setswambung said the formal education systems have disrupted the practical everyday life aspects of indigenous knowledge and ways of learning, and replaced them with abstract knowledge and academic ways of learning.

“Today, there is a grave risk that much indigenous knowledge is being lost and, along with it, valuable knowledge about ways of living sustainably,” he said.

Setswambung reiterate that this cultural carnival was loaded with a variety of enticing activities. According to him, the Tlokwe City Council was the first to implement this cultural carnival which is to be rolled out in all municipalities across the province.

He said: “This is being done as part of the strategy to heighten the arts and the cultural milieu in the province. Various stakeholders from three spheres of government and community organisations displayed their products at exhibition stalls throughout the day for those who wanted to buy. Artists and crafters also participated in the Cultural carnival.”

Youth miss out as NYDA moves training programme

skills-development-saj-artisan-training-institute

BY REGINALD KANYANE

ABOUT 50 young people in the Kagisano-Molopo local municipality took to the streets on Wednesday after a National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) training programme that was meant for them was moved to Taung.

The youth blamed the local municipality for the bungle.

One of the affected young people, Tumisang Duncan Goboentse, 29, said that they were supposed to start with their plumbing and wielding learnership, but the move was blocked by mayor, Veronica Keketsi.

“We were offered a learnership, but now it seems our names were removed from the list. We want to know what happened because this learnership will come in handy. Unemployment is taking over our lives, now the least we expect is confusion within the programme,” Goboentse said.

Another disgruntled youth, Molly Magabe, 23, said poverty was the order of the day in the area and without any skills development, they will struggle forever.

Mayor Veronica Keketsi said she never received any information regarding the learnership programme and refuted claims that she was the one blocking the programme.

“I really know nothing about that programme, but I will ask the MMC to look into the matter. I will never stand in the way of any youth programmes that will be implemented in the area,” she said.

Boitumelo Chichinbua, a member of the mayoral committee for local economic development at kagisano-Molopo local municipality said that investigations were underway to establish why the programme was moved.

“So far, I’m not aware of what really transpired because the youth submitted their grievances to me on Monday, and I am still trying to find out who got all answers. We will make sure we inform them of the outcome immediately we get all facts correct,” Chinchinbua said.

NYDA coordinator in the area, Mothusi Montoedi said: “There learnership was delayed in Kagisano-Molopo and it was moved to Taung because of some technicalities. We were engaged with all stakeholders on Wednesday and the training commenced yesterday (Thursday). The municipality was not involved in any delays, and we will go back to those youth and inform them about any development amid the issue.”

‘North West University commits to change’

mafikeng campus logo

BY REGINALD KANYANE

PREMIER Supra Mahumapelo has expressed confidence that the North West University will be able to reach its transformation targets and be a pride for the province.

This came after his meeting with vice-chancellor Prof Dan Kgwadi in Potchefstroom on Wednesday.

It is over ten years since the merger of the Potchefstroom, Mafikeng and Vaal campuses but complaints have been raised on the slow pace of having same standards of facilities and resources at the three campuses.

Acting provincial government spokesperson, Brian Setswambung said the premier discussed plans how to make sure that all three campuses work together in harmony.

“Premier Mahumapelo met with Professor Kgwadi and he wanted to understand the measures taken by the university to bring equity and academic excellence at all campuses. This came about after complaints that the Potchefstroom Campus was given the best lecturers as opposed to the other two campuses.

“The premier addressed students and reminded them that they are part of society, so they need to make sure there is transformation between black and white communities. He also added that the university must assess and evaluate its diversity process an integral part of their management system. Mahumapelo also said he will make sure he monitor situation closely and be in touch with the management at the university in making sure that is accomplished efficiently and conveniently,” Setswambung said.

Prof Kgwadi said that he shared the premier’s sentiments and will do his best to make sure that transformation is speeded up.

“Our meeting was very successful. I want to reiterate what premier said: we have to eliminate a mindset of selfishness that defined our past so that we can be able to provide academic excellence at this university.

We are working around the clock to bring transformation within all campuses. One thing that I do not want to see is having every campus with its own rector because that creates factionalism and it would have to be done away with,” Kgwadi said.

He added that as the vice-chancellor, it rests upon him to see all campuses receiving the best education possible.

Newly-elected university SRC president at Mafikeng Campus, Linda Xavier Mabengwane said: “We are meeting with the university management today (Friday) and we will discuss all issues regarding transformation within three campuses. So we can say the computer laboratory cater only for 600 students and opened from 8am until 5pm, and that affect learning process to other students. Another issue was facilities, and infrastructures. In Potchefstroom, the infrastructures are maintained and take care of, whereas in Mafikeng and Vaal, you will find that they are dilapidating,” Mabengwane said.

He argued that tuition fee was very expensive and that closed the doors of learning on previously disadvantaged students.

“We will make sure that also highly-qualified lecturers are roped in at both Mafikeng and Vaal campuses. We only have lecturers with master degrees, whereas in Potchefstroom Campus, they having professors. We also want to fight racism issue within the university. All campuses need to be treated equally without any favouritism, because thus far, Potchefstroom students are given first preference,” Mabengwane said.
