Ajax Cape Town stun Chiefs to win MTN 8 cup

IMG_20150919_172945

Cape Town – Ajax Cape Town were on Saturday crowned MTN8 champions when they beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in the tournament final at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

The goal came midway through the second-half through a Nathan Paulse penalty after he had been brought down by Chiefs centre back Eric Mathoho.

The Urban Warriors started the first-half in fine fashion after Cecil Lolo’s pin-point ball deliveries put Amakhosi on the back foot immediately.

Lolo created the first real threat in the eighth minute as he crossed the ball towards Paulse but the veteran’s header sailed over the crossbar.

It was Lolo once again in the 23rd minute, this time from a set-piece as his delivery was connected by Mosa Lebusa into the back of the net but the offside flag was raised.

Minutes later Lolo was in the thick of things again crossing the ball from a free-kick towards Paulse, who opted to volley the ball but his effort hit the crossbar.

Abbubaker Mobara was next to threaten Chiefs defence following a cross from Lolo but the defender’s header was brilliantly by Itumeleng Khune.

Steve Komphela’s side hoped things would change in the second stanza but Ajax came out the dressing room with the same attitude.

It was then in the 55th minute that Chiefs would start panicking as Mathoho brought down Paulse in the penalty area and the veteran forward made no mistake in slotting the spot-kick home.

Amakhosi tried to find their feet throughout the rest of the encounter but Ajax seemed determined to hold onto their 1-goal lead.

In the end the Urban Warriors defeated the defending champions 1-0, to claim the R8m prize.

‘Paintball guns issued to guard municipal properties’

images

BY REGINALD KANYANE

THE Matlosana municipality says investigations are underway to establish the truth of allegations that a security company hired to guard the municipality’s water purification plants uses paintball guns.

It has been alleged that Tshireletso Security Company arms its guards with paintball guns instead of real firearms, a situation described as scandalous.

The DA’s Chris Hattingh said: “The DA discovered that some guards are only equipped with batons and not even paintball guns. It is absolutely unacceptable and an affront to the people of Matlosana that this security business received more than R24m for its services in a 22-month period without so much as a single firearm on site.”

He said the DA had submitted a letter demanding that the security company’s contract be terminated after an audit report from July until May 2015.

Hattingh said the reports showed that the company was in breach of contract.

“Despite this, huge contract payments to the company continued after this audit report. Municipal property valued at R820 000 was still stolen or destroyed from under its nose,” he said.

Matlosana mayor Kagiso Khauoe said the municipality was under administration and all submitted grievances were under forensic investigation.

“All the enquiries are now under forensic investigations, including the Tshireletso security company. We started to offer the company posts that needed no firearms and we will look into which areas demanded armed guards and take it from there,” Khauoe said.
