Over 1200 suspects arrested for various crimes during Operation Shanela

More than 1200 suspects were arrested for various crimes during Operation Shanela. They were arrested for crimes, including amongst others, 12 for dealing in drugs, 7 for murder, four for attempted murder, 97 for assault with the intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) and 62 for common assault. 

The North West police spokesperson, Col Adele Myburgh said 17 suspects were arrested for drunk driving, 19 for burglary, 104 for illegal dealing in liquor, 143 for possession of drugs and 200 for possession of counterfeit goods. 

“The Operation Shanela is set to prevent and combat crime. It has proved to be successful after the first year in operation in the province. The arrest included 23 undocumented persons and 304 wanted persons.

“The arrests were effected through execution of several actions, which included stop and searches, patrols, road blocks, vehicle check points, visiting and inspecting of licensed liquor premises, Second-hand goods dealers, tracing of wanted suspects and many others,” she said.   

Myburgh further said during the operations, police confiscated liquor, vehicles, a rifle, cellular phones, tobacco products, copper cables and a variety of drugs. She added that all the arrested suspects are expected to make their court appearances in different courts this week.

Reverend from Indonesia pays a courtesy visit to Kgosi Jeff Montshioa

Reverend Dr Yosafat of the Yosofat Ministries from Indonesia, kick-started the second leg of his Miracle Healing For All Nations Crusade in South Africa, by paying a courtesy visit to His Royal Highness Senior Chief (Kgosi-Kgolo) Jeff Montshiwa at the Barolong Boo Ratshidi Tribal Kgotla on Monday. 

The televangelist, who is the co-founder of the Yosofat Ministries with his brother, Father Yacobus, was accompanied by Mahikeng church leaders to brief Montshiwa and his tribal council ahead of the two-day crusade, whose opening service commences at 3pm this afternoon at Victory Celebration Church Ext 38 Mmabatho.

Montshiwa presented Josafat with an autographed book titled: Montshiwa Barolong Chief & Patriot authored by Dr Silas Modiri Molema after receiving a gift from him and his entourage.

“We are truly blessed to be hosting in our city a man of Yosafat’s calibre, an anointed but humble servant of GOD who has traversed across the globe to be a blessing to our people. 

“God has been using Yosafat to heal millions of people for the last two decades during crusades held in many Asian countries as well as in the USA and Europe,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Mahikeng Miracle Healing For All Nations Crusade, which follows the one held in Kempton Park (Gauteng), will be followed by others in the North West scheduled for Vryburg on 10 and 11 May 2024, while in Rustenburg will be on 15 and 16 May 2024 and Potchefstroom on 21 and 22 May 2024.

Police condemn violent protests across Mahikeng

The North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena has condemned in the strongest possible terms the eruption of public violence incidents in Mahikeng. This comes after a number of community members barricaded various roads, including the N18 in Makhubung village and R503 in Danville in the early hours of today.  

Kwena said the reports suggest that unidentified people torched a bus and a delivery truck at Extension 39 and Montshioa Township respectively. He further said schooling has also been disrupted by yet to be identified groups that removed learners from schools, particularly in Montshioa. 

“The situation is currently under control and police in the Greater Mahikeng and Public Order Police (POP), are working hard to maintain public order. Barricades have been removed from most of the affected national and provincial roads to allow the free flow of traffic.

“We would like to request all law abiding citizens not to participate in violent and unlawful protests, which are characterised by criminality and meant to cause anarchy and unnecessary panic amongst members of the community,” said Kwena.  

He added that, they also urge members of the community, including Community Police Forum (CPF) members to be the eyes and ears of the police by reporting instigators and anyone who incites violence. Kwena made it clear that the police will not hesitate to trace and arrest those who are responsible for these acts of violence.

“The police are maintaining their presence in the area. The police management noted with concern the tendency of public servants who fail to report for work under the pretext that it is not safe to go to work or schools, while workers in other sectors still report for duty with minimal or no serious disturbance,” said Kwena.

Meanwhile, the North West Department of Education spokesperson, Mphata Molokwane said: “The department has been informed that recent protests in various sections of the province have disrupted teaching in some locations, as violent action has stopped teachers and learners from entering school premises.

“The protests in the Mahikeng area have already disrupted some schools today, especially in Mmabatho. This is an extremely significant time of year for all learners, but especially Grade 12 learners. Examinations for June are currently underway.” 

Molokwane said these assessments help their National Senior Certificate (NSC) learners TO understand where their future stands as they prepare for the most critical exams. He said these protests are violent and they must remind protesters that their rights to free assembly, association and expression, must be utilized responsibly. 

“The constitution also states that every child is entitled to a basic education. As a department, our primary priority is to ensure the safety of all learners and teachers, as well as the continuity of teaching and learning.

“We will take firm action against anyone who seeks to disrupt teaching and learning in our schools across the province and we will not hesitate to pursue criminal charges under the SA Schools Act against anyone who tries to keep learners and teachers from attending core activities of the day,” said Molokwane.

He said the department will, therefore, not tolerate any unlawful action that leads to the closure of its schools.

A woman in court for alleged R17m tax evasion

A case against a woman who is accused of fraud and contravention of the Tax Administration Act has been postponed by the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crime Court to 2 August 2024, for the outcome of legal representations and further investigations. 

Jaqueline Legoabe is accused of defrauding South African Revenue Service (SARS) R17 million on her personal and company tax. 

The Investigating Directorate spokesperson, Henry Mamothame said, the state is expected to reply to her representations on the set date. Mamothame said Legoabe, who is a Director of Titan E Services (Pty) Ltd, was arrested in March 2023. 

“This follows intensive collaborative investigations between the Investigating Directorate (ID) and the South African Revenue Service (SARS), wherein she stands accused of defrauding SARS of over R17 million in tax evasion between 2015 and 2020. 

“She faces 30 counts of fraud for allegedly failing to declare and misrepresenting some of her income tax returns and that of her company. She further faces alternative counts of Contravening the Tax Administration Act,” he said. 

Mamothame further said she had a legal obligation to submit an annual tax return for the period stipulated, as published in the Government Gazette, however, Legoabe misrepresented the tax returns, leading to SARS and National Treasury losing approximately R17 million. 

He added that investigations into this matter are also linked to the alleged proceeds obtained from the looting at Eskom. 

“Legoabe is currently out on R10 000 bail and is expected back in court on 2 August 2024, when the matter resumes,” said Mamothame.

Another suspect linked to Robocop project arrested in Jan Kempdorp

In continuous efforts to put behind bars alleged fraudsters and robbers, the Provincial Organised and Commercial Crimes members in North West, have arrested three more suspects, as part of bringing to book the outstanding project, Robocop suspects.

The North West police spokesperson, Col Adele Myburgh said the first two suspects were arrested in Ventersdorp and Vryburg respectively on 30 April 2024. Myburgh said as a result, the duo, Raselane Kaweni (44) and Seuntjie Yman (31), briefly appeared in the Vryburg Magistrate’s Court on 2 May 2024. 

“They were remanded in custody until 6 May 2024. In another arrest, the determined team apprehended a man (53) in Jan Kempdorp on 2 May 2024. The suspect is linked to 10 separate cases of robbery aggravating, kidnapping and extortion, which were allegedly committed at Huhudi Township, between November 2020 and August 2022.  

“The suspect is due to appear in the Vryburg Magistrate’s Court today. The arrest brings the number of arrested suspects since the termination of Project Robocop to 18,” she said.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, applauded the police for their concerted efforts to ensure that alleged perpetrators are brought to book.

‘Gangsters nabbed for business robbery in Wollies’

The North West police said in an endeavor to fight gangsterism, four alleged members of the Mathintha gang aged between 17 and 25, were arrested on Sunday. It is alleged that a gang consisting of eight suspects armed with pangas, knives and iron pipes, stormed into a tuck-shop in Chris Hani Section, Tswelelang Township in Wolmaransstad. 

The North West police spokesperson, Col Adele Myburgh said the suspects allegedly robbed the shop of an undisclosed amount of cash and stock to the estimated value of R6000. Myburgh further said shortly after the incident was reported to the police, the first two suspects, Tebogo Kenalemang (18) and Kgotso Emmanuel “Pakistan” Thabe (19), were arrested by the police. 

“They briefly appeared in the Wolmaransstad Magistrate’s Court on 17 April 2024 and were remanded in custody. Further investigation by the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, led to two more arrests on 3 May 2024. 

“The two suspects, aged 25 and 17, will appear before the Wolmaransstad Magistrate’s and Children’s Court respectively on 6 May 2024, on charges of business robbery. Anyone who may have information that can assist the police in the investigation, including the arrest of the remaining suspects, can contact Captain Mpho Mosiane of the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit on Cell 082 ‪492 3762,” she added.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, congratulated the police for their speedy reaction and the Anti-Gang Unit members for their meticulous investigation that resulted in these arrests. Kwena said this will impact positively on crimes committed by gangs in the area.

Police are looking for missing Angolan man

The police in Letlhabile request the community’s assistance in locating an Angolan national, Antonio Leandro Wakankwa (70), who is missing. The North West police spokesperson, Col Adele Myburgh said Wakankwa is residing in Block G, Letlhabile.

She further said, he was last seen by his wife on Thursday morning (2 May 2024). Myburgh added that the wife went to the local clinic and on her return later at around 4pm, Wakankwa was nowhere to be found.

“He was last seen wearing a grey jacket, a torn jersey with blue stripes, green short pants and white slippers. He has dementia and it is possible that he will not be able to remember his own name or address.

“Anyone who may have information regarding Wakankwa’s whereabouts, is requested to contact the Investigating Officer, Constable Tshireletso Ratsola of Letlhabile Detectives on 082 ‪416 0670 or your nearest police station,” she said.  

Myburgh said anonymous tip-offs can also be communicated via My SAPS App on smart phones or alternatively call Crime Stop on ‪‪‪08600 10111.

Matolong man nabbed for allegedly assaulting his mother, MRM calls for a harsher sentence

The Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) in the North West said it is disappointed by the despicable and shameful act of a man (41) in Matolong village, near Taung who allegedly assaulted his own mother (73). MRM Provincial Interim Committee Convener, Pastor Lesiba Kgwele, commended the police for the culprit’s swift arrest.

Kgwele said this comes after the elderly son allegedly defied a protection order that his mother had earlier successfully applied against him.

“We are confident that the criminal justice system will send an unequivocal message that there is no place in our society for those who abuse and commit such atrocious acts against the most vulnerable in our society being the elderly and women. 

“Abuse of parents by their children is a sign of moral decay. So, we call on our communities to unite in action to reclaim Ubuntu as well as lost family and community values. The courageous step undertaken by the assaulted mother had demonstrated that the elderly do not have to suffer in silence,” he said. 

Kgwele further said the programme for the relaunch of MRM structures in districts and municipalities across the province, which was suspended due to the national and provincial elections and focus on promoting the Charter of Elections Ethics, will soon be expedited.

He added that this will ensure that intervention programmes targeted at the most vulnerable are implemented full steam in partnership with government, traditional leaders, churches and other civil society organisations. 

The North West police spokesperson, Col Adele Myburgh said: “The suspect has also been charged for contravention of a Protection Order under the Domestic Violence Act, 1998 (Act No. 116 of 1998). It is alleged that, on 2 May 2024, the suspect allegedly came home and assaulted his mother. 

“He was arrested on 3 May 2024, shortly after the incident was reported to the police.  He will appear before the Taung Magistrate’s Court on Monday.” 

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, said it is sad that an elderly mother was allegedly attacked by her own son, who is supposed to protect her. Kwena condemned the incident in the strongest possible terms and said police will continue to protect the most vulnerable and bring the alleged perpetrators to book.

Government partnership with Danish Environmental Protection Agency to resolve water challenges in Dinokana

The Department of Water and Sanitation(DWS) in partnership with The Danish Environmental Protection Agency from Denmark, Magalies Water Board and Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, conducted a site visit to the Dinokana Water Scheme recently. 

The visit was part of the South Africa and Denmark Cooperation Strategic government-to-government partnership in the water sector. The Department of Water and Sanitation spokesperson, Wisane Mavasa said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), was signed in November 2015 by the Minister of Water and Sanitation and the Danish Minister of Environment and Food to improve the framework conditions of the South African water sector. 

Mavasa further said this initiative is also set to improve the investor attractiveness of the water sector in support of the realization of the Sustainable Development Goal 6.

He added that, Dinokana area has been selected for piloting of the implementation of protection zoning guideline, which aims creating a guidance document outlining knowledge-based management and precautionary management approaches that may be used to protect groundwater resources from pollution sources through delineation aquifer protection zones in Dinokana.

“This means an increased water resilience on human activities with less economic costs on treatment of drinking water, indirect protection of groundwater dependent surface water bodies such as wetlands, lakes and rivers and to assist on frequency of groundwater monitoring. 

“This also entails procedures for reporting compliance issues should contamination of water resources occur. The site visit consisted of a close examination of operation and maintenance of boreholes in Matlhase Wellfield to observe and monitor its water supply and its ground water quality,” said Mavasa. 

He said there was also an oversight of Dinokana in the Upper and Lower eye, which is the main source of water. Mavasa said the delegation assessed progress made in the upgrade of a spring water pump station under the Dinokana Water Supply Project launched by Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu in October last year. 

“The project funded under Water Service Infrastructure Grant (WSIG) also includes refurbishing Dinokana Upper Eye Pump Station. To date, the pump station interior, paintwork, broken pumps, leaking and non-functional valves and the control panel have been repaired, replaced, and restored,” he said.

Meanwhile, the chief of Bahurutshe Ba Ga Moiloa Tribal Authority, Kgosi Mosiameemang Moiloa, welcomed the visit by the delegation and said that he was anticipating the team’s findings and recommendations, which will ensure continuous flow of water in his land.
