NORTH West Community Safety and Transport Management, MEC Gaoage Molapisi handed over 16 animal drawn cards to the deserving communities of Modimola village in Mahikeng. The event was part of the official closing ceremony of the October Transport month 2015.
In his address during the event, Molapisi said non-motorised transport is the most dominant in the villages of Bokone Bophirima. He said it had been in existence from time in memorial. This mode of transport has been used for ploughing, movement of people, good and services for ages.
“This is a means of transport used in deep rural areas where people are transported to clinics, pension pay-points, and learners to school, transportation of goods, including water, wood, groceries and furniture. Many of our rural areas in the province are still reliant on these carts. For them to reach their destinations, they make use of this mode of transport,” Molapisi said.
He further added that the non-motorised transport was a safe, reliable and affordable mode of transport for rural-based communities in the province.
“Access to reliable, safe and affordable transport services by every citizen of this province and the country at large is a fundamental policy of government. Public transport, in most of our rural areas and villages is inaccessible due to number of factors, which contributes to less public transport making the service inaccessible and unaffordable for our rural communities. In some areas, our people are force to walk long distances to get to the pick-up points before they could ultimately access public transport. Now with the donation of these animal drawn carts will at least shorten your walking distance to pick-up points.
“This is also our possible alternative to provide you with an affordable, reliable and efficient mode of transport in support of the social and economic development needs in the rural communities of our province,” concluded Molapisi.
The October Transport Month is an annual feature on the calendar of the department of transport and is one of the platforms and vehicles through which the department engages directly with stakeholders.
It influences the economy in many ways, through its impact on the efficiency of business operations and labour mobility and, for its citizens, the attractiveness of South Africa as a place in which to live and prosper.
The month was officially launched in October 2005. This was to raise awareness of the important role of transport in the economy, and to invite participation from civic society and business, in providing a safer, more affordable, accessible and reliable transport system for the community.
