Lesotho national in court for possession of suspected stolen livestock

21 April 2026 – The two accused who were arrested for possession of suspected stolen livestock, briefly appeared before the Lichtenburg Magistrate’s Court on 20 April 2026. One of the accused (20), could not be linked to the commission of the offence and she was released. It is alleged that she was hitch-hiking at the time of the incident.

The North West police spokesperson, Captain Majang Skalkie said the driver of the vehicle, Mamapele Mahlaba Mpewa (40), a Lesotho national, was formally charged with possession of suspected stolen livestock. Skalkie said Mpewa was remanded in custody until 28 April 2026, for a formal bail application.

“The livestock was positively identified by the rightful owner through a registered brand mark. Investigations into the matter are ongoing,” she said.

A man nabbed for killing his wife

19 March 2026- A Lesotho national, Mthakathi Gift Njama (38) from Meyerton, appeared before the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court, where he abandoned his bail application. Njama faces charges of murder of his wife, Faniswa Majola May and contravention of immigration laws for allegedly being in the country illegally.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana said it is alleged that on 3 March 2026, the family of the deceased called the deceased’s child enquiring about their mother. Mahanjana said during the phone call, the child told the deceased’s family that they were traveling with his father and that the accused had locked the deceased in the house at their place of residence in Meyerton.

“On the same day, the family of the deceased went to the deceased’s place of residence and on arrival, when they could not find her, the deceased’s family went to the police and reported the deceased missing.

“A search by the police was conducted for both the deceased and the accused. On 5 March 2026, the accused was found in Vereeniging. The accused then led the police to a nearby stream, where the body of the deceased was found,” she said.

Mahanjana further said he was arrested on the scene. She added that in court, the accused abandoned his bail application.

“The matter was postponed to 25 March 2026, for a regional court appearance,” said Mahanjana.

Lesotho man sentenced to 12 years for killing his countryman

31 October 2025- A man (27) was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for the murder of his fellow countryman. On 7 September 2024, the victim, Tsietsi Motlaopa (32), a Lesotho national, was at the accused Tumisang Maleke’s residence in Cassel village when an argument broke out between the two men.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Merapelo Pilane said the altercation escalated into a physical confrontation during which the accused stabbed the victim in the upper body with a sharp object. Pilane said the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel later declared Motlaopa dead on the scene.

“The matter was reported to the Bothithong Police Station and the suspect was swiftly arrested. He was charged with murder and Detective Constable Lucky Mabuthwane was assigned to investigate the case. His diligent work and successful opposition to bail ensured that the accused remained in custody until sentencing.

“The court ultimately found Maleke guilty and sentenced him to 12 years for murder with an additional 2 years for contravention of Immigration Laws and also declared unfit to possess a firearm,” he said.

Meanwhile, the acting John Taolo Gaetsewe District Police Commissioner, Brigadier Kenneth Baloi, commended Mabuthwane for his commitment and thorough investigative efforts that led to the successful conviction.
