As part of the recruitment and retention strategy and initiative to address critical and scarce skills in the sector, the National Department of Social Development is hereby making a scholarship available in the field of Social Work.____ Applications are open to current Social Work students as well as prospective students who would like to enroll for a Social Work Degree. Students who are currently holders of a National Department of Social Development Scholarship do not have to apply. Don’t flaunt your wealth, says the government.


This directive is contained in its latest five-year development plan and suggests that keeping your fine clothes, fast cars and fancy footwear on the down-low will help “build a socially cohesive society that is balanced”.

In its Medium-Term Strategic Framework 2014-2019 (MTSF), the government has lambasted as “offensive” those who show off their wealth in the face of high levels of inequality and unemployment.

This echoes concerns initially raised in the National Development Plan (NDP).

Josephilda Nhlapo-Hlophe, outcomes facilitator for the presidency’s department of planning, performance monitoring and evaluation, said: “This criticism is meant for everyone. That is why government has led the way with Treasury introducing austerity measures to curb unnecessary spending by the executive and government. That statement is meant to help transform society and build a socially cohesive society that is balanced.”

Nhlapo-Hlophe wrote the social cohesion section of the MTSF document.

But she had especially harsh words for those whose fancy cars, designer clothes, luxury watches and other visible signs of wealth seem to come from nowhere.

“Many times we see people who we know do not work or have any access to income and suddenly, the person is driving a flashy car. The question people will ask is: ‘Where does that person get this money from?’

“This person might not be a good role model for young kids who think getting flashy things is more important than hard work and the contributions they are making to society. We are trying to build a citizen who knows you get rewarded for working hard.”

Johannesburg- Followers of Bafana Bafana on social media will be happy to know that the Twitter handle for the Men’s Senior National Team has been verified and there will no longer be any confusion as to which is the official account.

The account was verified last week and in addition Bafana Bafana got their original handle – @BafanaBafana – back, thanks to the assistance of the Twitter team. The old handle @Bafana_Bafana1 will no longer be used and followers and supporters are encouraged to use the new account.

Current followers will not have to re-follow the account but will notice the change in the account name.

More positive news for SAFA social media is that the Association’s twitter handle – @SAFA_net as well as the Women’s Senior National Team Banyana Banyana (@Banyana_Banyana) had their accounts also verified.

SAFA head of communications Dominic Chimhavi said he was happy with the latest developments and encouraged national team football fans and football followers in general to use these mediums to share views and suggestions.

“Social media and Twitter in particular are important tools for any brand in these modern times. It allows us to receive instant feedback from the public and share ideas.

“We encourage the public to keep engaging us through these platforms. We endeavor to address any issues raised but more importantly to use the platforms to provide updates about developments at SAFA,” said Chimhavi.-TDN

Kimberley – The case of two Angolan men accused of smuggling dogs was postponed in the Springbok Magistrate’s Court on Friday, Northern Cape police said.

The case would resume on October 29, Lieutenant Sergio Kock said.

Inocencio Da Silva Manuel, 35, and Joao Texteira Antonio, 37, were arrested while travelling to Angola at the Vioolsdrift border post on August 17.

They had 33 dogs in their vehicle and trailer, but allegedly only had export permits for 23 of the dogs.

The dogs included Boerboels, Huskies, and German Shepherds. Kock said most of the dogs were dehydrated and showed symptoms of malnutrition.

The men were released on R5000 bail each in August.

Klerksdorp – Ten people were arrested for attempting to rob a bank in Klerksdorp, North West police said on Friday.

The North West organised crime unit of the Hawks, the tactical response team and the special task force made the arrests on Thursday after receiving a tip-off, said Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.

Four suspects were arrested inside the bank and eight in suspected stolen getaway cars in the parking area. Two suspects were later cleared.

“The police managed to recover two AK47 rifles and three magazines, including handguns.”

The investigation would continue and the suspected stolen cars handed back to their lawful owners.

The suspects would appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of attempted business robbery and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

North West police commissioner Lt-Gen Zukiswa Mbombo praised the arrests.

“This is evidence enough that the DNA of the 21st police century is partnership policing, when the police and the community play their roles respectively. We would like to encourage more of this partnership,” she said.
