Kimberley- Two suspects aged 27 and 33 have been arrested red-handed inside two cellphone retail shops, on Saturday in Kimberley.

Lieutenant Sergio Kock said the suspects were charged for defraud.

They defrauded well-known cellphones retail shops using different Identity documents to open cellphone contracts accounts.

“These are not the first group of suspects to be arrested while operating in the area either opening cellphone accounts or upgrading their existing cellphone contracts they have with the cellphone retailers around Kimberely.

“Their arrest came after cellphone sales consultants in these two well-known retailers picked up, from their contract account systems while processing the applications that these suspects have been in a mission defrauding the cellphone retailers in different province around the country” he said.

One of the suspects was already blacklisted by the retailers, as he was already wanted for similar crime of fraud which he had committed in Tzaneen, Johannesburg and East London.

“During our investigation we found the suspects with different Identity documents and copies in their possession, and furthermore it was also revealed that on Saturday they managed to obtain an expensive cellphone worth R11 000, with the very same fraudulent tactics. We also found them in possession of different simcards and stolen petrol card” Kock said.

The suspects are due to appear before the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court soon.-TDN

Johannesburg- Head Coach Shakes Mashaba has retained the bulk of the squad that drew 1-1 with Cameroon in the third round first leg of the 2015 African Youth Championships (AYC) played in Yaoundé, Cameroon last weekend (Saturday, 16 August 2014).

Mashaba has, however, added five players to the 18-man squad that traveled to Cameroon – which is now without goalkeeper Dumisani Msibi, who was red carded in that match.

Mpho Mathekga has been called up in place of Msibi, joining Jethren Barr in goals.

The other four new players in the squad are defender Tebogo Moerane of Bidvest Wits, Hashim Domingo, a midfielder with Ajax Cape Town, Mamelodi Sundowns striker Ntando Ngubane as well as midfielder Phillip Ndlondlo of Izinyoka FC who missed the cut when the squad jetted out to Yaoundé.

Amajita have already arrived in Polokwane to continue preparations for this match.

“You all know the importance of this match and I cannot emphasise it any further. We went to Cameroon and came back with a 1-1 draw, a crucial away goal. But it doesn’t mean we will relax and defend the result. Football is about attacking and defending, and this second leg will be won in the first 45 minutes. The longer it stays level the riskier it becomes for us so we have to be at our best. We have to put pressure on them but also be cautious at the same time,” said Mashaba.

South Africa and Cameroon face off in the decider that will be staged on Sunday, 31 August at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

“This is a very important match to the Association and to the country. For far too long we have not had much success in the junior ranks and we believe with this team we are on the brink of that.

“But we would like appeal to the people of Polokwane and the surrounding areas to come out in numbers to support these young players. We are all too aware that going to junior national team matches is not sexy, but it is going to be vital to give the support for the success of this nation,” said SAFA CEO Dennis Mumble at the squad announcement in Johannesburg.

The overall winner between South Africa and Cameroon qualifies for the 19th edition of the African Youth Championships which will be held in Senegal from 8 – 22 March in 2015.

The semi-finalists at the African Youth Championships automatically book their places to the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup tournament in New Zealand.-TDN

Mahikeng- Thandeka Moseki of Groot Verdriet Farm in Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District restored the pride of North West Province when she won the category of Best Subsistence Producer during the National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Female Entrepreneur Awards 2014 held at Mmabatho Convention Centre in Mahikeng on Friday night.

The awards which are held by the joint venture of National (DAFF), North West Department of Rural, Environment and Agricultural Development and Total South Africa is part and parcel of an effort in acknowledging and rewarding women entrepreneurs during the Women’s Month and beyond.

Thandeka who owns the Groot Verdriet Farm in Stella near Vryburg is young, vibrant and committed to her trade. She began her farming career by keeping small stock, which later enabled her to acquire a 310 hectare farm.

She further augments her business by also producing and selling vegetables and fruits.

She was one of the finalists in this year’s national competition after winning the same category provincially in Klerksdorp Rio Casino last week Friday. For her efforts she went home with R150 000 in cash.
The awards aimed at rewarding the efforts and contribution of women, youth and people with disabilities in matters of food security, job creation, economic growth and poverty alleviation were ultimately won by Ms. Ivy Nokwanele from the Eastern Cape as the overall winner.

An overjoyed and excited Thandeka attributed her success to hard work as well as the support she has been receiving from the department’s extension services, management as well as her family.

She said winning in her category has encouraged and increased her confidence and opened up other avenues for further development as she has long been yearning to expand into commercial farming.

“I hope that this award will further position my farm in greater heights within the sector” concluded Thandeka.

In congratulating Thandeka, MEC for Rural, Enviroment and Agriculture Development North West Province Manketsi Tlhape said although the department was aiming for the overall prize of best female entrepreneur award 2014, she is still ecstatic that atleast Thandeka brought a category home.

MEC Tlhape went on to say Thandeka’s win further indicates government’s intention to uplift previously disadvantaged women from our villages and this is being intensified. She encouraged other women to take heed from Thandeka’s win who started from humble beginnings and urged them to join the Agricultural train as a business venture.

The awards were attended by amongst others Minister of Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Senzeni Zokwana, Deputy Minister Bheki Cele and MECs from other provinces.-TDN

North West- The police arrested a total of 878 suspects through various day to day and Platinum Belt Operations in the past seven days between 17 and 25 August  2014 for Contact, Contact related, Property related and other crimes, North West police spokesperson colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said.

The arrests include 14 for murder, 172 for assault GBH and common, 13 for Rape, 57 for burglary residential and business, 21 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, 130 for drug related crimes and 34 for possession of suspected stolen goods. 

“The police also managed to recover and seize properties such as various drugs, illegal cigarettes, liquor, 21 cellphones, 5 firearms and 67 ammunition, various electrical appliances and many other properties” he said.  

Colonel Mokgwabone said most of the suspects have already appeared in various courts within the province while others are due  to appear on Monday.-TDN

Vryburg- The North West Provincial Commissioner thanked the community for their co-operation in the fight against crime that led to apprehension of suspects for  non-ferrous metals related crime in Vryburg. 

“It is alleged that suspects were clamped down when transporting tons of copper cables on Thursday.  The arrest was made after police attached to the station’s Firearm, Liquor and Second Hand goods (FL ASH) received information that there was a vehicle transporting copper cables” colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said.

Police followed-up the suspected vehicle. The vehicle was stopped and searched at one of the local filling stations and two occupants were questioned about the copper wires that were in the car.  

They allegedly informed the police that they bought the copper wires in Northern Cape, but could neither produce proof of purchase nor confirm the place where they bought the cables.

More than 4 tons of copper wires valued at more than R260 000 were confiscated.

The suspects, aged 51 and 52 are due to appear in Vryburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday for possession of suspected stolen property.

Investigation into the matter continues.

Wolmaransstad- A 29-year-old suspect is expected to appear in Wolmaransstad Magistrates’ Court for alleged murder of a 22-year-old man, North West police said.

The incident took place on Saturday at approximately 05:00 at Chris Hani Street.

“It is alleged that the suspect and the victim were involved in an argument when the former stabbed and hit the latter with a broken beer bottle and stone” colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said.

Investigation into the matter continues.

“It is alleged that the complainant was asleep inside her house when she heard somebody knocking at the door.  It is alleged that the complainant did not respond  and two suspects forced entry into the house” colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said. 

The suspects allegedly threatened her with a knife and forcefully raped and robbed her cash and cellphone before fleeing the scene. One of the suspects was successfully traced and arrested later. 

The police are still looking for the second suspect. 

The arrested suspect is due to appear in Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court soon to face a charge of rape and house robbery.

Johannesburg – The Economic Freedom Fighters are a “dangerous cancer” trying to “smash” Parliament, the SA Communist Party said on Sunday.

“We call on all South Africans, including those members of the EFF parliamentary caucus who are themselves increasingly alarmed by the bus they have boarded, to isolate this dangerous cancer within our body politic,” SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande told journalists in Johannesburg following the party’s three-day central committee meeting.

“The leadership of the EFF is in Parliament in order to discredit and smash it.”

On Thursday, EFF leader Julius Malema objected to President Jacob Zuma’s reply to a question about when he was going to repay part of the R246m spent on security upgrades to his private Nkandla homestead in KwaZulu-Natal.

National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete ordered the red overall-clad MPs out after they began to disrupt proceedings and started chanting “pay back the money”.

The MPs refused to leave, continuing to chant and shout slogans, forcing Mbete to adjourn proceedings.

Nzimande said Malema had long been supported by wealthy funders.

“We welcome reports that Sars is investigating the source of payments for Malema’s tax debt. It is Sars on behalf of the people of South Africa that needs to be saying to Malema and his dodgy backers ‘pay back the money’,” Nzimande said.

Malema was acting like someone who had nothing to lose, he said.

“His behaviour, not just in Parliament in Cape Town, but in the Gauteng legislature, continues along the same trajectory of anarchic plunder and wrecking anything in his way, that characterised his conduct in Limpopo and as leader of ANCYL.”

Johannesburg – Sasol Banyana Banyana beat Zambia 4-0 in an international friendly match played at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka on Sunday, 24 August.

A first half goal by Shiwe Nongwanya, who plays for Bloemfontein Celtic ladies in the Sasol League and second half hat-trick by veteran striker Portia Modise from Gauteng Sasol League outfit Croesus, sealed the win for Vera Pauw’s charges.

This was the fifth match the Sasol sponsored women’s national team played as part of their preparations for the African Women’s Championships that will be hosted by Namibia from 11-25 October.

The home side enjoyed most of the possession in the opening 10 minutes of the match, putting Banyana Banyana under pressure and forcing them to play in their own half.

Goalkeeper Roxanne Barker made a great save by tipping the ball over in the fifth minute, denying She-polopolo ladies a chance to open the scoring.

In the 22nd minute, Banyana Banyana came close to breaking the deadlock after Simphiwe Dludlu made a cross into the box, but it fell into the Zambian keeper’s hands

Sasol Banyana Banyana opened the scoring on the half hour mark after Nongwanya received a great pass from Refiloe Jane, beating the defenders and scoring from inside the box.

Pauw made her first substitution of the match at the start of the second half, replacing youngster Thembi Kgatlane with Silindile Ngubane.

Banyana Banyana changed the pace of the game in the second stanza, enjoying most of the ball possession.

Modise doubled the score for Sasol Banyana Banyana in the 63rd minute after receiving a hard and low cross from Nongwanya, finishing with an easy tap-in.

Pauw’s charges took charge of the match, with Modise completing her brace in the 73rd minute and a hat trick in the 90th minute ending the match at 4-0.

Sasol Banyana Banyana travel back to South Africa on Monday afternoon to continue with their camp ahead of their next assignment in Polokwane against Tanzania on Saturday, 31 August 2014. That will complete what has been a successful women’s month.
