Two people died and 7 injured following taxi violence in Setlagole

IMG_20150801_072541

The Bokone Bophirima Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Gaoage Molapisi condemns the taxi violence with strongest terms following an incident in just few meters from Setlagole Village.

This follows an incident in Setlagole where two people lost their lives and 7 injured after one taxi driver allegedly chased a taxi which had loaded people hiking to Mahikeng at the garage in Setlagole. This tragedy happened on N18 road between Mahikeng and Vryburg.

“We don’t need these kinds of behaviours on our roads, taxi drivers, owners should desist from resolving problems with violence. They must learn the art of engagement, negotiation and conflict resolution. Violence is and will never be the solution to any problem. Taxi industry is a business and not a gang and should not be run as a mafia organisation. We are not going to tolerate any violence or else we will close these routes because they belong to government. Human lives must be respected by all, now families have lost their beloved ones and others may be permanently disabled for something that could have been resolved or even let go. We appeal to the taxi associations to intervene in such incidents, and as the department we would further ensure that we strengthen the law enforcement on our roads.

It is high time we take our day-to-day operations seriously and turn the taxi operations into a business not some kind of violent taxi operation. Gone are the days that people are traumatise, but must be served with dignity,” said Molapisi, who sends his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the two people who lost their lives and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.

Members of the public experiencing any challenges or non compliance on the road are advised to contact the Departmental Call Centre on this number: 0800 204 992.

‘Fraud, mayhem’ at top health lab

Johannesburg – Former employees of the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) allege that its former chief executive Dr Saggie Pillay’s tenure at the body was marred by corruption – and that whistle-blowers were dealt with swiftly.

In 2012, former NHLS industrial relations manager Senzeni Ndlangisa lost his job after 12 years’ service after a junior employee accused him of sexual harassment.

Ndlangisa said he was falsely accused in order to derail his investigation into alleged irregular payments authorised by a senior female human resources staff member to recruitment company Holystic Approach.

A 2010 forensic audit had previously found that this staff member, whose name is known to Health-e News, also violated procurement policies when she authorised payments to a stationery company that was accused of providing kick-backs to other NHLS staff in exchange for business.
