28 July 2026 – An intelligence-driven operation conducted by members of the Public Order Policing (POP) Unit and the Potchefstroom Flying Squad resulted in the arrest of two alleged undocumented migrants for allegedly being in possession of illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of more than R2 million on Monday morning. According to preliminary investigation, the police intercepted a two-ton truck, transporting illicit cigarettes on the N12 road, near Klerksdorp.
The North West police spokesperson, Sergeant Kelebogile Morake said the truck was stopped and searched, leading to the discovery of numerous master boxes of illicit cigarettes concealed inside. Morake said the driver and his crew member, both alleged foreign migrants aged 39 and 41, were arrested at the scene.
“The police also confiscated the illicit cigarettes and the two-ton truck, allegedly used in the commission of the offence. The Department of Home Affairs has been engaged to verify the suspects’ immigration status. The suspects are expected to appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on 29 July 2026, where they will face charges relating to the possession of illicit cigarettes,” she said.
Meanwhile, the acting North West Police Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, commended the members for their dedication and professionalism in ensuring that these illicit products do not reach communities. Naidoo said the successful seizure demonstrates SAPS unwavering commitment to combating the illicit trade, which undermines the country’s economy and fuels organised crime.
“The police will continue to intensify operations aimed at disrupting criminal networks involved in the illicit trade of goods. Those who choose to engage in these unlawful activities must know that the long arm of the law will catch up with them,” he said.
