THE Newly endorsed sewing project in Kraaipan village set to benefit the community. The project was given necessary injection on Friday by Gold Harmony mining. One of the project owners, Gabose Leshope said they welcome the massive support from Harmony Gold mining and municipality.

“We are very proud that, as a result of the various skills development offered by Harmony Gold mining, some of us have been able to sustain our own small businesses. The project will enable us to support ourselves. This, in turn, allows us to change the lives of formerly dependant families by employing them. Ladies from our centre are actively involved in filling sewing orders that we receive from different companies.

“Our specialities include clothing, bed linen, table clothes and different types of promotional aprons. The project is growing and benefits both the organisation and the producers. We are now able to put a plate of food on the table and enjoy a feeling of economic freedom. We will be working tirelessly to get businesses from various government institutions and private sectors. We also design logos and school uniforms,” Leshope said.

The Harmony Gold mining CEO, Graham Griggs said: “We donated an embroidery computer to help the sustainability of the project. The computer and printing machine will assist them in depicting logos on the materials.  Unique projects like this benefit and uplifting disadvantaged people. We will continue to show support and help where necessary,” he said.

More than 20 women were part of the sewing project so far. The Ratlou municipal mayor, Phenyo Victor Mance said: “The project will empower many people and introduce a needed change within the community. We offered skill development workshops and training to the beneficiaries. So we believe they could grow it in leaps. Many companies across municipality must now come and place their orders. That will reduce unemployment and inequality within the society. Many women are single parents, so our aim is to give opportunity to many women as we can.”
