NUM disturbed by the hostage drama unfolding at Amplats

num
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is highly disturbed by the latest hostage drama that involves 2000 mineworkers at Amplats Dishaba mine in Limpopo where some people are holding innocent workers for a sit-in protest. “We are disturbed by the action as it is unprotected. We appeal to the leaders of the strike to release the workers unharmed and follow the correct disputes procedures. It is unsafe and unhealthy to have a strike underground” says Erick Gcilitshana, NUM Health and safety Secretary.

He said some of the workers were on medication for various illnesses and already they have gone hours without food. “This is indeed very dangerous to them. Some of the NUM Shopstewards managed to escape and they are safe on surface as we speak now,” Gcilitshana said.

The NUM is currently in talks with the company management to see if they can make sure that workers are released safely.-TDN

Madonsela against Nkandla report extension

55538ace675342ca85119a2aaa3c4c42
Public Protector Thuli Madonsela says it would be against the public interest to grant the State Security Cluster more than five days to scrutinise her provisional report on the security upgrade at President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla residence.

The Security Cluster challenged Madonsela in the Pretoria High Court, interdicting her from releasing the provisional report to other interested and affected parties.

The Public Protector’s spokesperson, Kgalalelo Masibi, says Madonsela informed Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi why she could not accede to their request for more time to scrutinise the report.

He says Madonsela was, as indicated in her letter to the Minister, concerned that leaving the report in the hands of the Security Cluster for an unduly extended period would prejudice, in particular, those that she has made provisional adverse findings against and those she has quoted as having provided her with evidence and who, to date, have not received the report.

According to Masibi, “It would also not be in the public interest if the Security Cluster has exclusive possession of the report. These concerns were expressed to the Minister, who offered no solutions to them.”

Rantie Dedicates Goal To McCarthy

ba254bceeda6f8f6f07fd3c14e8f8322110
Tokelo Rantie found his first goal in the colours of Championship side AFC Bournemouth on Saturday as they played to a 1-1 draw with the league leaders Burnley.

Speaking after the match Rantie dedicated the goal to his former colleague at Orlando Pirates, Benni McCarthy, who he said gave him advice of how to achieve in leagues abroad.

Rantie says he was lucky to play under the guidance of the former Bafana Bafana international star, from whom he learnt a lot.

“I used to score a lot of goals like the one today – he (Benni) used to set me up like Brett Pitman did,” he said, according to the Daily Star.

“I learned from Benni. It was excellent to be around him, he’s just too good.

“I was lucky enough to get his guidance, and he told me about the importance of playing in this league or the Premier League.”

Rantie added that playing alongside McCarthy at Orlando Pirates, when the striker still plied his trade in South Africa, prepared him for his time in England.

“We were a deadly partnership, me and him,” added Rantie.

“I was unknown but Benni brought with him all he had learned from the English game.

“I learned from him.”

AFC Bournemouth currently occupy 14 place in the division one league, but oculd move up to 12th if they win their next league match against Derby County on November 23.

News reaching the Siya crew is that Mamelodi Sundowns striker, Richard Henyekane, has attracted interest from Polokwane City.

Henyekane has struggled for game time at Sundowns so far this season. The Kimberly-born player has made just one substitute appearance in the league in the 2013/14 campaign.

According to a source, who spoke to the Siya crew on condition of anonymity, the former Golden Arrows player has been mentioned as a possible addition to the current squad of the Limpopo outfit.

“I spoke with one of the officials at Polokwane City and Richard Henyekane’s name was mentioned among those of the players earmarked,” said the source.

City may want to get the player on loan in the January transfer window. The club’s spokesperson, Patrick Baloyi, refused to comment on the matter.

Henyekane’s contract with Sundowns runs until 2016, after the striker extended his stay at Chloorkop by two years in January.

Benni In Cape Town

da85e0774afff100ea121901041ae78c110Benni McCarthy is in Cape Town for a few days, making a fleeting visit in an International week, just like he used to in heyday as a Bafana Bafana regular.

South Africa’s all-time leading goal-scorer, is living overseas again, and is in the process of becoming a coach, since he retired during this past off season.

The former Seven Stars, Ajax, Celta Vigo, Porto, Blackburn, West Ham and Orlando Pirates striker has recently started his coaching badges, and spent some time at Glasgow Celtic recently, working with Neil Lennon.

Benni is in the Mother City for a few days to visit his mother and family, who still live in the city.

The Siya crew got hold of the former Orlando Pirates striker and he said that he thought it would be a more difficult transition from playing to coaching, but he is loving it.

Al-Ahly suspend Abdul Zaher

1776df3a69a8a7327e5a407a9229e9c8110_210x157
Cairo – Egypt’s Al-Ahly have decided on Monday to suspend a player for a goal celebration that sympathises with Islamists targeted in a crackdown by the army-installed authorities, sources said.

Al-Ahly’s board is set to approve the decision Tuesday to fine and suspend Ahmed Abdul Zahar from next month’s FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco, the club sources said.

The 28-year-old forward held up four fingers after scoring the second goal as Al-Ahly defeated Orlando Pirates of South Africa in the final of the CAF Champions League on Sunday.

Islamists have often flashed the four-finger sign, called Rabaa (four) in Arabic, at anti-military protests since a deadly crackdown on supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi in Cairo’s Rabaa al-Adawiya square on August 14.

Hundreds of people were killed in clashes when security forces stormed Rabaa al-Adawiya and Nahda squares in the Egyptian capital to disperse sit-ins by Morsi supporters who rejected his ouster by the army in July.

On Sunday Al-Ahly won an eighth African Champions League trophy when they beat the Pirates 2-0 in the second leg of the final in Cairo.

A senior member of the club told AFP on condition of anonymity that the move to suspend Abdul Zaher was being taken because “he mixed politics with sport”.

Egypt’s minister of state for sport, Taher Abu Zeid, said in a statement that he “expects” the nation’s football federation to “suspend and fine Abdul Zaher the way Kung Fu fighter Mohamed Youssef was”.

“The ministry itself cannot take such decisions but the concerned institutions can.”

Egypt’s Kung Fu Association banned Youssef from international championships for two years after he wore a T-shirt bearing the four-finger sign last month at a tournament in Russia.

Sources said meanwhile that Al-Ahly star Mohamed Aboutrika, also a known Islamist sympathiser, missed the medal ceremony after Sunday’s match.

They said he had been searching in his locker for a T-shirt with number 72 on it, representing the number of people killed in clashes in the February 2012 stadium riot in Port Said.

The riot erupted when fans of Al-Masry Club of Port Said clashed with Al-Ahly supporters.
