N West police ready for miners strike

Rustenburg- Different Mines in the Rustenburg Platinum Belt will begin their legally protected strike on Thursday. 

“As a legal strike it is upon organisers and it is their responsibility to ensure that their strike is peaceful and they adhere to the picketing rules.  Members of the South African Police Service, Public Order Policing will be deployed to ensure peace and security of both, the striking mine workers and the general public” brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

Ngubane said some of the picketing rules are that striking mine workers should not interfere with public order and no destruction of property, or intimidation of those who will be going to work or going about their normal daily business.

“As the South African Police Service, we have the responsibility to ensure that the laws of the Republic are enforced where there is disregard. Safety and Security is a shared responsibility and the North West Provincial Commissioner; Zukiswa Mbombo, calls upon all parties to play their part in managing the strike” she said.

“The mine management has a duty to ensure that within the confines of their private property jurisdiction, they provide adequate security for those who will be on duty. Union AMCU organisers has the duty of making sure that their strike is peaceful, respect the rule of law, authority and she further said the South African Police Service will monitor the strike and ensure compliance with the law” concludes Ngubane.

Police will be deployed to ensure peace and security but the strike remains a labour matter and the South African Police Service would like to urge all participants and striking miners to respect authority and the rule of law as they exercise their democratic right. 

The cautionary measures that have been taken is that no dangerous weapons will be allowed at the during the gathering of the strikers.  The Dangerous Weapons Act No 15 of 2013 which has came into effect on the 02 January 2014 will be applicable.

“The Act defines dangerous weapons as any object other than a firearm, capable of causing death or inflict serious bodily harm, if it were used for any unlawful purpose. These weapons amongst others include homemade weapons, spears, pangas and etc” he said.

The Mine Crime Combating Forum is already active to ensure proper co-ordination of all activities of the strike and to bring all relevant stakeholders on board.-TDN

Police: Only Four Confirmed Dead In Mothutlung Protest

Mothutlung- North West police refutes media reports that the fifty person died in Mothutlung village after the community protest on service delivery.

Four people were confirmed dead in connection of the protest.

“The North West Corporate Communication received numerous enquiries regarding the death of the fifth person due to Mothutlung service delivery protest last week.  You are hereby notified that at this stage, we are not aware about any death of the fifth person relating to Mothutlung protest over shortage of water where people were allegedly shot by police officials” colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said.

Meanwhile, the handing over of the memorandum by communities of Hebron to Madibeng Local Municipality went well. The memorandum was handed to the Mayor Tshidi Mokgwatlhe. 

“According to the information, everything went well without any incident or criminal activity that reported to the attention of the police who monitored the situation” said Mokgwabone.-TDN

Mthethwa vows to clean up Saps


CAPE TOWN – Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa says he is determined to clean up the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The minister was addressing residents in Mitchells Plain as part of a police recruitment drive on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier in the day he addressed hundreds of hopefuls at the Lentegeur Civic Centre.

Mthethwa told the prospective recruits he wants to ensure the best candidates are selected to join the police force.

“We want to ensure that right from the beginning we get the right people who will do the job. They must also be committed to ensuring the safety of South Africans.”

Mthethwa says corruption and police brutality have no place in the SAPS.

There are currently more than 660 constable positions available in the Western Cape.

The recruitment drive will run for another three days.

This piggies were hijacked


JOHANNESBURG – The SPCA says a truck with a trailer carrying 200 piglets has been hijacked in Pretoria East.

The truck driver was hijacked at gun point in the Donkerhoek area on Tuesday.

The SPCA’s Christine Kuch is appealing to the public to be on the lookout for the Nissan truck.

“Please just let an authority know if you come across the truck and trailer. Even if abandoned at the side of the road, don’t approach – we know the people are dangerous.”

She says the vehicle’s registration is XGR 007–GP and the trailer’s registration is WBC 050–GP.

Each of 20–week–old male piglets are marked with a GHB tattoo in an ear.

Kuch says the SPCA is gravely concerned for the welfare of the piglets.

Eza could earn Sundowns deal


KickOff.com has learnt that Mamelodi Sundowns could sign Nigeria striker Christopher Eze after he impressed during his trial with the Brazilians.

Eze is currently training with Sundowns and according to sources within the club, the Nigerian international has made a huge impression at Chloorkop and coach Pitso Mosimane has reportedly been very happy with his performances.

Downs communication co-ordinator Thulani Thuswa confirmed the presence of Eze at the club but could not give more details.

Krejcir associate wears a bulletproof vest to court


Johannesburg – A man allegedly linked to the attempted murder of investigators in the case against Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Several armed men, dressed in civilian clothing and wearing bulletproof vests entered the courtroom ahead of Owen Serrero’s case.

According to the charge sheet, he faced three charges of robbery with aggravated circumstances, two charges of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, three of theft of motor vehicles and one of contravention of road traffic laws, another of interfering with an investigation and one of escaping from custody.

Serrero told the court he had appointed Victor Nkwashu, who was representing him in other criminal cases, to represent him in this case.

The court allowed for Serrero’s current case to be joined to some of the others he was facing.

Speaking to media outside court, Nkwashu said he had yet to receive the complete charge sheet for the other cases his client was facing.

The case was postponed to 29 January.

Request to be moved

Serrero’s request to be moved to another police station was also granted by the court on Wednesday.

Nkwashu told media that his client had wanted to be moved as he was assaulted by police officers where he was currently being held.

“He is being moved for his own safety,” said Nkwashu.

He indicated that Serrero had injuries to soft tissues, and bruises.

They intended to lay a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm against the police.

Serrero was also part of a group of people arrested in connection with the attempted murder of investigators of Krejcir’s case.

Krejcir and three other men were arrested in November for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting a man whose brother, known only as “Doctor”, disappeared with a 25kg shipment of tik he had been recruited to help smuggle through OR Tambo International Airport.

They allegedly kept the man at Krejcir’s Money Point business in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, for four days, and assaulted him.

New Madibeng mayor promises visits


Brits – The newly appointed mayor of the Madibeng Local Municipality promised to visit Hebron on Wednesday.

“As a new leadership we will visit the community and interact with them,” Matshidiso Mangoathe told reporters.

She added that a meeting would be arranged with the ward councillor to see if she required help in addressing issues in the community.

“At the present moment we just need time to go through the memorandum and see how best to respond,” she said.

She was speaking to reporters after accepting a memorandum from residents of Hebron near Ga-Rankuwa in Pretoria.

The residents of Hebron are complaining about service delivery in their township and calling for the resignation of their ward councillor. They claim the councillor neither listens to them nor addresses their grievances.

DA: N West premier must take the blame for Madibeng debacle

Madibeng- The ANC’s move to fire three top officials in the Madibeng municipality is a cynical move aimed at sheltering the party’s national and provincial leadership,says DA Chris Hattingh.

“The mayor, ANC chief whip and the speaker all deserve to go given their non-delivery to the people of Madibeng. But the truth is that there are far more senior members of the ANC that should also be held accountable for the disaster in Madibeng” DA Chris Hattingh said.

Hattingh said the three ANC members in Madibeng that were fired are fall-guys for the real culprits.

“The real culprits are the ANC Premier, Thandi Modise, who not only received a copy of the Madibeng Ministerial Report during February 2013 and deliberately failed to act on it, but also allowed poor service delivery, like we see in Madibeng, to take place all over North West. The same goes for the Water Affairs Minister, Edna Molewa, who has known about the situation in Madibeng for ages” he said.

DA said they only started caring about Madibeng when people died and the media started covering the story.

“This move to fire three low-level officials must not be interpreted at an honest attempt by the ANC to clean house in North West. It is about saving face and shifting accountability away from the ANC’s senior leadership in the province” outlines DA.

DA said the fact of the matter is that the ANC in North West has been utterly corrupted by self-serving individuals.

“It can no longer deliver on the promise of freedom. The time has come to vote DA for a corruption-free, effective government that is able to combat the legacy of apartheid” concludes Hattingh.-TDN
