Bafana unveil new Nike kit

Johannesburg-Nike today revealed the South African national team kit that Bafana Bafana will take to the pitch with, in their international friendly against Brasil on March 5 in Johannesburg.

“The new limited edition away kit features a simplistic, yet classic design. The all-white jersey boasts the SAFA logo and Protea emblem on either side of the chest, while the South African flag sits proudly on the outer back of the neck.  White shorts and socks complete the look” Bafana Bafana spokesperson Matlhomola Morake said.

The jersey is made with Nike Dri-FIT technology which aids performance by helping to regulate player body temperature over the course of a match, while pulling moisture away from the skin to the outside of the garment where it evaporates more quickly.

“The new kit is exclusively available to the South African Football Association’s (SAFA) national team structures until December 2014” said Morake.

Nike and SAFA will unveil the 2015-2016 kit in November 2014, with an assortment of supporter-wear available from early January 2015.-TDN

Acting Premier welcomes arrest of two for miner’s attempted murder

North West Acting Premier, Paul Sebegoe has welcomed the arrest of two men in connection with the attempted murder of a miner at Anglo American Platinum’s Khuseleka 1 shaft near Rustenburg. The pair is expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrates Court today.

In calling for a settlement to be found to end the month long violent strike, Sebegoe said that acts of violence and intimidation of non-striking workers undermines peace and stability in the mining sector.According to police two male suspects aged 29 were arrested for attempted murder linked to the ongoing Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union’s (Amcu) protected strike.

Brigadier Thualne Ngubane said a 51-year-old man was on his way to work on 3 February when he was offered a lift in an unknown car with two occupants.

“Upon arrival at the mine, the car parked near a group of picketing and striking mine employees. The victim was allegedly taken into the group,” Ngubane said.

The man was allegedly intimidated and forced to walk to the nearby stalls where he was undressed.

“It is alleged that he was later taken to a dumping site where he was assaulted severely with stones. According to the information, he managed to escape and ran naked towards the shaft where he was rescued by mine security,” he said.

Police were notified of the attack and a case opened.

The two were arrested on Tuesday when they handed themselves to police.-TDN

Judge sets out rules for Pistorius trial broadcast

Pretoria – The North Gauteng High Court on Tuesday granted media houses permission to televise parts of the murder trial of paralympian Oscar Pistorius.

Judge Dunstan Mlambo said hi-tech broadcast equipment could be installed in the courtroom where Pistorius was set to go on trial next week for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

“The applicants’ authorised representatives are permitted to set up equipment in accordance with the specifications that I mention [in the judgment] to obtain a video and audio recording and or transmission of the permitted portions as indicated in this order.

Specifications

“The technical equipment shall comply with the following specifications: three cameras shall be installed in the courtroom at least 72 hours before the trial commences. The cameras shall be installed in locations which are unobtrusive,” Mlambo read from his judgment.

No camera personnel would be allowed in the courtroom, controlling the equipment during the trial. This, he said, was to avoid disrupting court proceedings.

“The equipment is not permitted to record any confidential communication between legal representatives, between clients and their representatives, or any bench discussions between the judge and assessors that may be appointed.

“The presiding judge shall specifically direct when recording should start and when it should stop,” said Mlambo.

He ordered that no “movie lights, flash attachments, or artificial lighting devices” were permitted in court.

The athlete’s testimony could not be broadcast.

Public interest

Mlambo said the media houses were allowed to broadcast audio-visual images of sections of the trial, including evidence of all State experts and the evidence of police and former police officers about the crime scene.

Closing arguments by the State and Pistorius’s legal team, delivery of the judgment or sentence, if applicable, could also be broadcast.

Mlambo said: “It is… in the public interest that, within allowance limits, the goings on during the trial be covered… to ensure a greater number of people in the community who are unable to attend the proceedings are able to follow wherever they may be.”

The application to film the proceedings was brought by news channel eNCA, joined by media houses MultiChoice and Eyewitness News.

Last week Frank Snyckers SC, for MultiChoice and Eyewitness News, told the court that media would use technologically advanced equipment that was unobtrusive and controlled remotely. Snyckers said media houses had secured the National Prosecuting Authority’s support for doing so.

Pistorius’s legal team opposed the application arguing that broadcasting the events would lead to an unfair trial. Barry Roux, SC, for Pistorius, asked why his client’s trial was not being treated like any other.

Pistorius is accused of killing Steenkamp, his girlfriend, on 14 February last year. His trial is to be heard in the North Gauteng High Court from March 3 to 20.

A 24-hour TV channel dedicated to the trial will begin broadcasting on DSTV on 2 March.
