The North West Department of Human Settlements said the first phase of the 103 constructed houses for the Deelpan residents, near Atamelang has been completed. The North West Department of Human Settlements spokesperson, Dineo Lolokwane said, the houses are part of the government’s integrated efforts to restore and rebuild Deelpan.

Lolokwane said this comes after it was engulfed by heavy rainfalls, resulting in over 75% of the village being submerged in water.

“Our obligation is to ensure that we restore the dignity of our people as enshrined in the constitution and the freedom charter. We therefore have delivered on the promise we made to the community of Deelpan.

“The official handover is planned to take place in the near future. The construction of the 103 housing units is the first phase of the project as announced by the acting North West Premier, Nono Maloyi during his State of the Province Address (SOPA),” she said.

Lolokwane further said 317 houses will be built following the donation of land by Kgosi Kogodi Molete of Bakolobeng and his Traditional Council.

Recently, the Deputy Minister in the Presidency responsible for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Pinky Kenana, visited the area to assess progress that has been made in addressing the aftermath of the devastating floods that struck the area in 2022.

Kekana expressed satisfaction on the progress made and also gave acknowledgement to the intervention team for their unwavering dedication they have shown to the project.

“We are very happy with the progress made in the wake of the floods, focusing on key interventions and initiatives. Notably, significant strides have been made in constructing the houses to provide shelter for those affected by the floods.

“Efforts are also underway to improve water and sanitation facilities, ensuring that the basic needs of the community are met,” she said.
