A man sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for rape

10 September 2026 – A man was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Pofadder Regional Court for rape on 9 September 2026. The accused, Nazeed Pienaar also affectionately known as China was convicted of rape following an incident that occurred on 29 March 2025, at approximately 2:50am, when a victim (46) was allegedly raped at her residence in Pella, while sleeping on the veranda.

Namakwa District police spokesperson, Captain Ivan Magerman said Constable Thabang Mokgethe of the Pofadder Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, who was on standby at the time, responded swiftly to the complaint and commenced with the necessary investigative processes. Magerman said the accused was arrested on 30 March 2025, and subsequently released on bail on 7 April 2025.

“Through a thorough and diligent investigation conducted by Mokgethe, sufficient evidence was presented before the court, resulting in the accused being found guilty of rape on 12 June 2026. He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

“In addition to the custodial sentence, the court declared Pienaar unfit to possess a firearm in terms of the Firearms Control Act. His name was ordered to be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders, and he was further declared unfit to work with children,” he said.

Meanwhile, the acting Namakwa District Police Commissioner, Colonel Moses Lekgwati, commended Mokgethe for his commitment, professionalism and meticulous investigative work, which ultimately contributed to securing the conviction and sentence. Lekgwati reiterated that the SAPS remains resolute in its efforts to combat gender-based violence and crimes committed against women, children and other vulnerable persons.

“This sentence sends a clear and unequivocal message that perpetrators of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) will not be allowed to act with impunity. The SAPS in Namakwa District remains committed to ensuring that perpetrators are relentlessly pursued, arrested and brought before the courts to face the full might of the law.

“The SAPS further encourages victims of GBV and sexual offences to report such incidents to the police and to seek the necessary support and assistance. Every report is treated seriously and will be investigated with the utmost professionalism and sensitivity,” he said.

A man sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for raping his mother

2 September 2026 – A man (22) was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the Carnarvon Regional Court for raping his mother (42) at their home in Vosburg on 23 November 2025. The conviction and sentence follow a thorough investigation conducted by Detective Constable Leevirne Nathalie Raaf of the Carnarvon Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, after the case was allocated to her for further investigation.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Litabe said during the court proceedings, it emerged that while the victim was asleep, she felt someone on top of her and realised that the perpetrator was her own son. Litabe said she screamed and questioned him about his actions, prompting the accused to immediately get off her.

“The victim woke her husband, whereafter the accused suddenly got up and fled from the house. The matter was subsequently reported to the police and an investigation was launched. The accused was later arrested after DNA analysis results linked him to the incident.

“He appeared in court on several occasions, during which Raaf successfully opposed his bail application. On 28 August 2026, the Carnarvon Regional Court found the accused guilty of rape and sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment,” he said.

 Litabe further said the court ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders and declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

Meanwhile, the Pixley ka Seme District Police Commissioner, Major General Nomana Mtukushe, commended Raaf for her dedication and meticulous investigative work, which contributed to securing the successful conviction and lengthy sentence. Mtukushe said the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape remains committed to implementing its Reset Agenda, which seeks to improve the effectiveness of policing, strengthen the investigation and detection of crime, and ensure that everyone in the province is and feels safe in their homes and communities.

“The combating of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) remains a focused area for the SAPS and efforts will continue unabated beyond Women’s Month,” he said.

A woman who allegedly poured her stepdaughter with boiling water out on R500 bail

10 February 2025- A woman was granted R500 bail by the Ventersdorp Magistrate’s Court on 7 February 2025, for assault with intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH). The accused handed herself over to the police on 6 February 2025, after becoming aware that members of Potchefstroom Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, were looking for her.

The North West police spokesperson, Captain Mpho Manyoba said, this comes after a complaint of apparent abuse of a child (7), was received on 31 January 2025. According Manyoba, the accused, who is the child’s stepmother, allegedly poured her with boiling water.

“The incident occurred last month at Tshing Township, Ventersdorp. Consequently, the child sustained injuries on her legs and upper body. Following assessment of the child by a Forensic Social Worker, the Department of Social Development made arrangements for the victim to be taken to her biological mother in KwaZulu-Natal.

“The investigation into the matter are underway. The case was postponed until 7 March 2025,” she said.

Meanwhile, acting North West Police Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, welcomed the arrest. Asaneng thanked the whistleblowers and the police for their cooperation and protecting the child from further abuse.
