“Coaches, technical officials, and umpires will also engage in specialised training sessions designed to enhance their competencies, further strengthening the sport in Zimbabwe.
“This initiative reflects NSA’s commitment to regional collaboration and capacity building. It builds on a history of partnership, including the Zimbabwe Under-21 National Team, known as the Zambezi Eagles, participating in the 2025 Telkom Netball League (TNL),” she said.

25 August 2025- Forum for South Africa (FOSA) mourns the passing of one of the greatest souls in South African storytelling, Nandi Nyembe, who has died at the age of 75. FOSA said for decades, Nandi Nyembe graced the screens with her talent, her wisdom and her ability to tell the stories of the people.
FOSA national leader, Tebogo Mashilompane said she inspired generations, gave them hope and carried the cultural spirit of South Africa through her roles. Mashilompane further said Nyembe was truly the soul of South African storytelling.
“While we celebrate her life and legacy, her passing highlights a painful reality — unlike musicians, who continue to receive royalties even after their death, actors and actresses in South Africa are left without the same recognition and financial security. Many of them give their lives to the craft but die without the dignity of sustained income, leaving their families with nothing.
“As FOSA, we call on the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture to urgently implement policies that will ensure actors and actresses receive royalties for their work — both during their lifetime and beyond, so their families may continue to benefit from their contributions to our cultural heritage,” he said.
Mashilompane added that this is not just a financial matter. He said it is a matter of justice, respect, and dignity for those who have carried our stories, built our film and television industry, and shaped our national identity.
“The best way to honour the memory of Nandi Nyembe is to ensure that no South African actor or actress is ever forgotten or unrewarded for the role they played in shaping our democracy and our culture,” said Mashilompane.
25 August 2025 – A man (41) was sentenced to life imprisonment b the Brits Magistrate’s Court for rape. The accused, Sello Solomon Mpete was also sentenced to additional eight years imprisonment for house-breaking with the intent to rape.
According to the North West police spokesperson, Colonel Adele Myburgh, Mpete raped victim (13) in Segwaelane village, near Mooinooi in the early hours of morning, on 13 August 2016. Myburgh said the court heard evidence that the mother (35) of two children left home at about 4:50am to go to work and locked her two daughters aged 13 and 7, inside the house.
“About an hour later, she received a “Please Call Me” notification from her daughter and she called her. The daughter informed her that someone broke into their home and raped her. The mother rushed home immediately and a case was reported to the police.
“The persistent efforts by members of the Brits Family violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit culminated in the arrest of Mpete five days later. He was released on bail,” she said.
Myburgh further said through meticulous investigation including overwhelming forensic leads evidence resulted in the conviction of Mpete was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and eight years for house-breaking with the intent to rape. She added that Mpete was also declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms section 103 of the Firearms Control Act, (Act No. 60 of 2000).
Meanwhile, the acting North West Police Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, congratulated the investigating Officer, Sergeant Andile Molate and the Public Prosecutor, Advocate Mosuwe, for their collaborative efforts that resulted in the sentence. Asaneng indicated that this case is one of many cases of serious sexual assaults, that women and young girl children are brutally violated by male sexual predators lurking undetected in the community.
“It is hoped that this dangerous, remorseless criminal will never again be released back into the community,” he said.
25 August 2025- The Republic of South Africa (RSA) president, Cyril Ramaphosa said last week, the country participated in the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Japan. Ramaphosa said this is an important forum for strengthening bilateral trade and investment between Japan and African countries.
He further said Japan is an important trading partner for South Africa in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, technology and agriculture. Ramaphosa added that at the business forum held on the sidelines of TICAD9 business representatives from South Africa and Japan discussed potential areas of collaboration in clean and renewable energy, automotive components and hydrogen production.
“One of the promising discussions was around the continental expansion plans by the Japanese automaker Isuzu Motors. Isuzu’s South African plant has trialled the manufacture of commercial trucks and truck bodies locally, and is engaging with Isuzu Motors Japan on its plans to become a manufacturing hub for the African market.
“At a time of global trade disruptions and mounting tariff pressures, participating in forums like TICAD is key to our economic diplomacy efforts. Economic diplomacy is an important part of our country’s foreign policy, and has become all the more critical at a time of economic headwinds and global power shifts,” he said.
Ramaphosa said South Africa’s National Interest Framework Policy Document, published in 2022, is clear that it is in the country’s national interest to forge strategic alliances that support economic partnerships and trading arrangements that favour, advance and safeguard our national interest. He said in the spirit of Kwame Nkrumah’s famous words “We face neither East nor West, we face forward”, South Africa will continue to engage with partners in both the Global North and Global South.
“Our approach is neither partisan nor beholden, but strategic.
Our economic diplomacy is centred on securing market access, attracting investment and promoting sustainable development. At a time when our country faces potentially high tariffs imposed by the US administration, we are continuing to put in place measures that reduce our dependence on historical markets.
“South Africa continues to advocate for an international trade regime that is fair, equitable and rules-based. We are seeking a trade regime that does not render developing economies vulnerable to unilateral measures or protectionist pressures,” said Ramaphosa.
He said likewise, their foreign policy is anchored in multilateralism, respect for sovereignty and the pursuit of alliances that advance peace, justice and our national interest. Ramaphosa said South Africa’s foreign policy outlook is not determined by pressure exerted by outside forces, but by principle.
“It is on principle that we continue to stand with the Palestinian people in their quest for statehood, recognising as we do the pain of dispossession, land theft and state-sanctioned brutality. Even when a number of countries criticised us for doing so, and before the full extent of the brutality in Gaza was laid bare, our commitment to peace, justice and the rule of law informed our decision to take Israel to the International Court of Justice.
“We continue to stand in principled solidarity with the peoples of Western Sahara in their struggle for self-determination, even when this has found us at odds with other countries, including on the African continent,” he said.
25 August 2025- The former driver, Thabang Sayner (30), of the Lekwa Teemane Local Municipality mayor, Sebang Motlhabi and vehicle rental service provider, Nthabiseng Yvonne Thabethe (48), briefly appeared in the Christiana Magistrate’s Court on 22 August 2025, on charges of corruption. Sayner and Thabethe’s court appearance emanates from a fraud and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act case linked to the former Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Hendrick Thokoane.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson in North West, Sivenathi Gunya said Thokoane was arrested in November 2024, by the members of the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation on allegations of procuring vehicle rental service for the mayor between April 2022 to May 2022, without following proper Supply Chain Management processes. Gunya said this was reportedly done without the approval of the Municipal Manager, resulting into the municipality suffering a loss of over R167 000.
“Sayner, who was the driver to the mayor of Lekwa Teemane Local Municipality, allegedly received gratification of over R100 000 from the service provider to influence the awarding of car rental service tender.
“Following an investigation, Syner and Thabethe were arrested on 21 August 2025 and 22 August 2025, respectively. The accused appeared in court and were granted bail,” he said.
Gunya further said Sayner was granted R2000 bail and Thabethe was granted R5000. He added that their matter was postponed to 29 October 2025, for first appearance at the Specialised Commercial Crime Court sitting in Christiana.

Myburgh said Marota was declared dead on the scene by Emergency and Medical Rescue Services (EMRS).
“Further investigations into the matter revealed that the suspect, after allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend, went back to his house, where he stabbed his current girlfriend multiple times.
“The victim was taken to a local hospital, where she is receiving medical treatment. Following the incidents, the suspect posted the reasons behind his evil deeds on social media,” she said.
Myburgh further said a suspect is expected to appear before the Temba Magistrate’s Court on 25 August 2025, on charges of murder and attempted murder.
Meanwhile, the acting North West Police Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng said: “The police will make sure that a watertight case is put before the court and that the suspect will answer for his dastardly and cowardly crimes against defenceless women.”
25 August 2025 – A multi-disciplinary Inter-Provincial Cross-Border Operation involving the Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Free State was executed simultaneously from 19 to 21 August 2025. The focus areas included drug-related offences, the proliferation of firearms, illicit mining, tracing of wanted suspects, and combating contact crimes.
The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock said the operation delivered significant results with 116 suspects arrested across the Frances Baard, Namakwa and Pixley Ka Seme Districts. Kock said numerous liquor outlets were inspected for compliance, while several unlicensed premises were closed.
“High-visibility patrols, vehicle checkpoints and roadblocks saw 319 vehicles and 8 345 persons stopped and searched across the province. Several wanted suspects were among those arrested.
“One of the most notable successes occurred in Colesberg on 20 August 2025, when SAPS members, supported by SARS Customs and SAPS Crime Intelligence, confiscated illicit cigarettes and a truck collectively valued at approximately R7.5 million,” he said.
Kock said in a separate incident, the police at the Colesberg weighbridge, discovered suspected stolen goods, including perfumes, counterfeit clothing and cell phones with erased serial numbers worth approximately R50 000 on 21Augiust 2025. He further said a suspect was arrested and the vehicle believed to have been used in the commission of the crime, a maroon VW Polo, was seized.
“During the course of the operation, police also confiscated counterfeit goods, dangerous weapons, firearms and ammunition, alcoholic beverages, drugs and cash,” added Kock.
Meanwhile, the Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, commended all four provinces, relevant departments and law enforcement agencies for their coordinated efforts. Otola extended her gratitude to Community Police Forums (CPFs) and the public for their continued support in the fight against crime.
“The collective efforts of law enforcement and our communities remain key in curbing and eradicating criminal activities across our provinces,” she said.
25 August 2025- The Northern Cape MEC for Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform, Mase Manopole said they successfully hosted the Northern Cape Blended Finance Roadshow held at Flamingo View in Kimberley in collaboration with the National Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) and joined by the Land Bank, Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), under the theme: “Unlocking Inclusive Agricultural Development in the Northern Cape.”
Manopole said the event provided a platform to raise awareness of blended finance opportunities for farmers, improve access to affordable and sustainable finance, and foster meaningful engagement between policymakers, financiers, and farmers to explore innovative financing mechanisms aimed at addressing persistent challenges in the agricultural sector. She emphasised that blended finance, combining concessional public funding with private sector investment, was a strategic tool to bridge the agricultural financing gap. She noted that smallholder and emerging farmers often face barriers such as limited collateral, climate-related risks, and high production costs, making access to affordable credit difficult.
Manopole further said in the past year, over 1000 producers received training, 1300 subsistence farmers were supported with garden establishment packs, agriculture contributed R11 billion to the provincial GDP in 2023 as reported by Stats SA, and 13 000 new jobs were created in the Quarter 3 and Quarter 4 of 2024. She added that, looking ahead, the department aims to increase agriculture’s GDP contribution from 7% to 10%, support 60 land reform farms, train another 1,000 producers, and create 750 additional jobs in the sector.
“The road to agricultural prosperity is long, but it is not out of reach. When resilience meets opportunity, transformation follows. Through blended finance, we can unlock not only funding but the full potential of the Northern Cape’s agricultural sector.
“Over 600 farmers from all five districts of the Northern Cape attended the roadshow, welcoming it with open arms as a gateway to unlocking financial opportunities. The Roadshow concluded with a strong call for partnership and accountability, reinforcing that blended finance is not a hand-out, but a collaborative investment in sustainable agricultural growth and rural economic empowerment,” said Manopole.

25 August 2025- The Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Mimmy Gondwe, will continue the Matric Support Programme in Kuruman and Douglas in the Northern Cape on 25 and 26 August 2025. The Matric Support Programme is part of Gondwe’s vision to enhance access to higher education and bring it closer to communities.
Gondwe said the programme primarily aims to assist Matric learners in accessing information about higher education, including available study opportunities and funding options, before entering the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) sector. She further said the Northern Cape visit comes after a successful launch of the programme in the Eastern Cape earlier in August.
“In implementing the programme, my office collaborates with the Fibre Processing and Manufacturing SETA, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, the National Skills Fund, and Old Mutual. All three entities, together with Old Mutual and the DM’s Helpdesk, will share essential information with learners about access, training, and funding in the higher education and training sector.
“I will be joined by Councillor Ikgopoleng Ephraim Aiseng, the Council Speaker of John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality, along with Councillor Itumeleng Matebese, the MMC for Finance and Corporate Services,” said Gondwe.
