MAHIKENG:

Police in Mahikeng are investigating a case of rape that happened on Saturday at about 17:40 at Unit 6 in Mmabatho. It is alleged that a 47 year old woman who was on her way home was confronted by the suspect who grabbed and dragged her to his place where he raped her. The suspect fled the scene and police are investigating.

OTTOSDAL:

On 8 September 2012, police in Ottosdal arrested one of the nine suspects who allegedly assaulted and stabbed a 39 year old suspect when he and his niece were from a night vigil in Letsopa, a township in Ottosdal. It is alleged that one suspect know to the victim stopped in front of the victim and denied him from passing, the suspect immediately stabbed the victim with a knife in a chest. When the suspect tried to fight back all the suspects assaulted the victim with an axe, fists and kicked him. They then robbed him an undisclosed amount of cash before they fled the place. Other suspects are still at large and police are investigating.

RUSTENBURG:

On Saturday morning at about 09:25, three unknown suspects robbed a phone shop  in Rustenburg an undisclosed amount of money and different make of cell phones. It is alleged that the complainant and her co workers were in a shop when the suspects entered and pretended to be customers. They threatened victims with firearms and robbed them. They fled the scene on foot and are still at large. Police are investigating.

HARTEBEESPOORTDAM:Police in Hartebeespoortdam are searching for a 55 year old Mike Dickson from 41 Cadoza Street, Westene in Johannesburg. Dickson was reported missing  on Friday, 7 September 2012 at the Hartebeespoortdam police station after he came with his cousin from Johannesburg  to Hartebeespoortdam on allegations that he got a job in the area. It is alleged that he climbed the cable car, and came down but was never seen thereafter. According to information  he was last seen wearing a blue cap, beige shirt, a pair of jeans and blue sneakers.

Police are appealing to anyone who can assist with any information to contact, Captain Shabalala from Hartebeespoortdam police station on

Jouberton- Police are investigating a death of a 38 year old man who collapse and died shortly after that.

According to information received, a the man arrived at his home and apparently he was vomiting heavily and collapsed.

He was confirmed dead by Paramedics and had  suffered some slightly injuries on his body.

“Police are investigating a case of a murder after a man died at extention 12 in Jouberton” Captain Makau said.

Meanwhile a 45 year old man found murdered in the street in Extension 16 also in Jouberton.

Unknown man was taken to government mutuary and Police are searching for suspect/s.

Klerksdorp- Two suspects were arrested by Crime Intelligent and Organised Crime, The Hawks after selling fake matric,engineering,nursing and trading certificates for the value of R4500 each.

Police acted on a tip-off from a member of the community that there are two people dealing with the mentioned crime.

“Police pounced on the two at a restuarant in Klerksdorp ad they were caught red-handed hence undisclose cash and fake certificates were recovered” Captain Makau said.

The two suspects will appear before Klerksdorp Magistrate today for fraud and corruption.

Bafana Bafana head coach Gordon Igesund will not be brining in any replacements for injured strikers Benni McCarthy and Dino Ndlovu for the international friendly match against Mozambique on Tuesday, 11 September 2012.

Bafana Bafana will play in a double-header with the South African Under 20 Men’s National Team playing in the first match at 17h30 against Botswana in an international friendly clash.

McCarthy and Ndlovu suffered a hamstring and a dislocated shoulder respectively in South Africa’s one nil (1-0) loss to Brazil on Friday, 7 September at the Estadio do Morumbi Stadium in Sao Paolo Brazil.

The duo has since been released from the squad.

“It is sad that we have lost the two players but it is part of the game there’s not much we can do but wish them a speedy recovery. We have only one training session on Monday (10 September) so it doesn’t help to bring in any replacements. The situation also gives me a chance to see and work with the players in the squad who did not get an opportunity against Brazil and I am confident they will raise their hands when given the opportunity,” said Igesund.

England-based midfielder Kagiso Dikgacoi has also been released to return to his club, leaving Igesund with 21 players to work with.

Bafana Bafana has already arrived in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga to complete preparations ahead of the Mozambique encounter which will be played at the Mbombela Stadium.

Kickoff is at 20h30.

After flying for about nine hours from Sao Paolo to South Africa, and a further 40 minutes from Johannesburg to Nelspruit, the players had a regeneration session where they loosened their muscles in the swimming pool.

They have been given the afternoon off and return to training on Monday at the Mbombela Stadium at 11h00.

A 28 year old Bangladesh national was this morning allegedly robbed and murdered at his place at Lenganeng section in Madibogo,North West province by unknown suspects.

It is alleged that the deceased was with his 21 year old girlfriend when the suspects forced entry in their house they were sleeping.

According to the information the suspects struck the deceased with a hammer on his head and the victim died on the scene.

“The suspects then proceed to the deceased shop which is in the same yard and stole items like airtime vouchers, cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash to the value of R 15,000.00” Captain Makau said.

The suspects are still at large and police are appealing to anybody with the information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact Madibogo police on

A case of murder and business robbery has been registered and police are investigating.

Lucrative state tenders, worth hundreds of millions, have emerged as a massive electoral carrot and intimidation tool as the ANC leadership battle hots up.

And KwaZulu-Natal, the ANC’s biggest province and President Jacob Zuma’s home province, has emerged as the epicentre of the battle for the ANC presidency.

With two weeks before the ANC is expected to formally open nominations, the undeclared race for leadership between Zuma and his deputy, Kgalema Motlanthe, reached fever pitch this week with lobby groups ramping up their activities.

The Sunday Tribune has established that important second-tier ANC leaders, provincial and regional chairs, have been strongly lobbied – and those contemplating voting against Zuma have been reminded that they would lose their access to influence government tenders.

“We were told that we would be out in the cold… that we would go hungry,” said one.

The “national coalition”, an informal structure formed to work for the return of Zuma to office, met in KZN this week to ramp up its activities. The coalition was expected to convene in the Northern Cape at the weekend where members were expected to lobby the provincial chairman, John Block.

Sources said Block would be told corruption charges against him would be dropped in return for his support for the Zuma lobby. In KZN fraud and corruption charges were dropped against ANC heavyweights Peggy Nkonyeni and Mike Mabuyakhulu in a case that involves Block. The Sunday Tribune has it on authority that the national coalition includes KZN Premier Zweli Mkhize, Free State Premier Ace Magashule, Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza and SACP chairman and Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande.

In Limpopo, Zuma lobbyists include Joe Paahla and Joe Maswanganyi. In the North West, the national coalition key member is provincial chairman Supra Mahumapelo.

The Sunday Tribune understands that one of the main reasons the pro-Zuma lobby was in KZN was to deal with divisions in what was thought to be a fully Zuma province.

A number of regional leaders have been upset by utterances from Sibongiseni Dlomo, chairman of the eThekwini region, who pronounced the structure would support Zuma’s re-election.

Working for the accession of Motlanthe to power is a group called the “change coalition”, which includes senior leaders from KZN, Gauteng, Limpopo and North West.

The group wants Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale as Motlanthe’s deputy.

The coalition is built around Motlanthe, who is said to have expressed a desire to be ANC president, but not president of SA.

He wants to be an ANC president based at party headquarters Luthuli House, with the mission of building the ANC.

This scenario would be attractive to a running mate – the person who would emerge as ANC deputy president at the Mangaung elective conference. While Sexwale is the front-runner, this position is regarded as “open”.

Several sources revealed members of the change coalition as Motlanthe, Sexwale and leading ANC officials in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KZN, Limpopo and the North West.

Government has the capability of constructing a developmental state that is also able to root out poverty, deliver quality services, fight corruption, improve access to quality education, ensure economic growth, and create more jobs in the economy, North West Premier Mme Thandi Modise asserted on Saturday.

Delivering her Turfloop Graduate School of Leadership Public Lecture on Service Delivery and a Developmental State in South Africa hosted by the University of Limpopo at the Bolivia Lodge in Polokwane, Premier Modise said that state intervention should play a major role in terms of growth, if it seeks to create democratic developmental state. 

The Premier highlighted that the developmental state in South Africa has the objective of actively intervening in the economy to drive investment in targeted areas to achieve a long term vision of a higher value added, labour absorptive and racially integrated economy.

Modise emphasised that state intervention in society and the economy would ensure the “common good” such as upgrading public service skills because the country is facing significant economic challenges and needs to accelerate the growth rate to create wealth that enhances the standard of living for all South Africans

.She said that this will dramatically increase employment creation; develop industrial capabilities to decrease the country’s dependence on commodity exports; and transform the ownership and management profile of the economy to reflect that of the broader South African population.

“Development is about improving quality of life…about equity and justice. It entails a growing economy in which redistribution is a critical element. The role of the state is to ensure democracy and popular participation. A strong state should have intellectual resources to plan, monitor and stimulate high growth.

It should mobilise and deploy capital into sectors unattractive to private industry in order to address the challenges of poverty, high unemployment, and HIV/AIDS and play an important role in promoting democracy, justice and a human rights culture,” Modise stressed.

She added that the New Growth Plan emphasises that we need to be facilitating the continuous emergence of concrete compacts between government and private interests to pursue specific projects that will take us closer to the achievement of our national goals and further that the National Development Plan places us on a forward—looking trajectory and requires all of us, not just Government, to commit to concrete programmes that will improve the lives of the South African people.

The Premier called on the universities to come on board in producing graduates that will make difference in the public sector, underlining that the National Development Plan emphasises this point and states that “higher education is the major driver of the information/knowledge system, linking it with economic development”.

“It goes on to say universities are pivotal to developing a nation. They produce new knowledge, critique information and find new local and global applications of the existing knowledge. They also set norms and standards, ethics and philosophy underpinning a nation’s knowledge capital,” she stressed. 

The Public Lecture was attended by academic staff, over 200 Masters in Public Administration and Masters in Development and other dignitaries that included MEC for Finance in Limpopo David Masondo.

”The lecture was thought provoking, insightful and should shape the academic discourse in the disciplines of economics, public administration and development studies,” said Executive Dean at the University, Professor Pumela Msweli in summing up the standing ovation that the Premier received after delivering her lecture.

The address was attended by academic staff and over 200 Masters in Public Administration and Masters in Development and other dignitaries that included the MEC for Finance David Masondo.

Twenty-three year old Shike Kleinkie Maripane, an Honours student said that he was impressed with the Premier’s lecture as she raised some of the pertinent challenges facing municipalities to deliver services. He supported the Premier’s call for communities, councillors and other stakeholders to work together to ensure that government provides services to reduce strikes and protests.
