M-Net pulls Pistorius ads

ImageJohannesburg – Pay TV channel M-Net is pulling campaign adverts featuring “Blade Runner” Oscar Pistorius off air with immediate effect, a company official said on Thursday.

Pistorius was due to appear on Thursday, but the court appearance was later moved to Friday.

The man known as the ‘Blade Runner’ will spend the night in jail, police confirmed.

This was after the shooting at his home of model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp.

“We are at this stage as the SA Police Services not able to disclose why are we opposing the bail,” said Beukes.

Pistorius was held at the Boschkop police station on Thursday morning, then taken to the Mamelodi Day Clinic for forensic tests.

Pistorius was co-operating with police, she said.

Beukes said there had been other incidents of domestic violence at his place.

“I confirm there had been previous incidents of a domestic nature at his place but this will form part of the investigation,” she said.

She said there was no sign of forced entry into Pretorius’ house and reports that the woman was shot after she was mistaken for an intruder were not coming from the police.

“As SA Police Services we do not have a report based on those allegations. We only heard over the radio that the woman was shot after she was mistaken for an intruder.”

Beukes said forensic detectives were busy collecting evidence from the crime scene and journalists would not be allowed in until the police handed over the scene to the estate’s security company. – Sapa, Reuters, AFP

Three cops held over car thefts

ImageTHREE policemen who are alleged to have been part of a long-running car theft
and hijacking syndicate were arrested in a series ofpre-dawn raids on their
homes in Soweto

The arrests, led by the Hawks, come after 14 months of investigations and sting operations where investigators bought eight stolen vehicles from the syndicate to strengthen their case.

The policemen were arrested in Protea, White City Jabavu and Jabulani. One of them is believed to be a ring leader and the other kingpin is a civilian.

When officers arrived at his home, his children were preparing for school.

The man’s youngest daughter broke into tears as police searched the home.

“The cells are cold, can I take a jacket?” the suspected rogue cop pleaded with his colleagues before being frog-marched out of the house.

The other officer was not at his home and police had to detain his sister, who led them to another property where he was arrested.

The third officer was due to be arrested at Protea police station just before he knocked off at 6am. But he had left work earlier.

He was nabbed elsewhere later in the morning. The operation netted nine of 10 targeted gang members.

Hawks spokesman Captain Paul Ramaloko said the officers, who faced charges of defeating the ends of justice and corruption, would trace stolen vehicles and instead of registering the recovery with the SAPS, they passed them on to vehicle thieves who would sell them.

The rest of the syndicate will face charges of hijacking, vehicle theft and housebreaking.

Ramaloko said many of the vehicles were stolen from yards at night and others were hijacked.

He said in one incident the officers recovered a stolen vehicle and then sold it back to the legitimate owner.

One other suspected stolen vehicle was recovered.

Ramaloko said the gang was expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate’s court tomorrow.

NUM president re-examined

Image

The president of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) returned to the stand at the Farlam commission of inquiry in Rustenburg on Thursday.

Senzeni Zokwana did so because Karel Tip, for the NUM, sought clarity on a strike by rock drill operators in the North West in June.

The inquiry heard that the rock drill operators at Lonmin platinum’s Marikana mine met with rock drill operators from another mine who indicated they could not get a wage increase.

The morning’s procedures started with Dali Mpofu, for the injured and arrested miners, seeking clarity from Zokwana on the songs union members sung at protests.

Zokwana earlier testified they were threatening. However, on Thursday he said not all the songs should be taken literally.

Zokwana was finished by the tea break and Mpofu indicated he would call a new witness, one of the miners shot and injured in August.

The commission is probing the deaths of 44 people during an unprotected strike at Lonmin’s Marikana mine. On August 16, 34 striking mineworkers were shot dead and 78 injured when police opened fire while trying to disperse a group that had gathered on a hill near the mine.

Ten people, including two police officers and two security guards, were killed near the mine in the preceding week.

The inquiry continues.

Blade Runner’ Pistorius charged with murdering girlfriend

Image

South African Olympic and Paralympic track star Oscar Pistorius, known as the “Blade Runner” for his racing prosthetics, was charged on Thursday with murdering his girlfriend at his home in Pretoria.

Police said they had opened a murder case after a 30-year-old woman was found shot dead at the scene in the upmarket Silverlakes gated community on the outskirts of the capital.

Police spokeswoman Katlego Mogale said a 9 mm pistol had been found at the scene and a 26-year-old man was taken into custody. In South Africa police do not identify suspects until they are charged in court.

“There are witnesses and they have been interviewed this morning. We are talking about neighbours and people that heard things earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place,” police brigadier Denise Beukes told reporters outside the residential complex in Pretoria.

“At this stage he is on his way to a district surgeon for medical examination and will be appearing at the Pretoria Magistrate Court at 2 pm this afternoon.”

Johannesburg’s Talk Radio 702 said Pistorius was believed to have shot his girlfriend, a model, in the head and arm, although the circumstances were unclear. The radio had said before the murder charge that he might have mistaken her for a burglar.

Reeva Steenkamp was reported to have been dating Pistorius for a year. In the social pages of last weekend’s Sunday Independent she described him as having “impeccable” taste.

“His gifts are always thoughtful,” she was quoted as saying.

Some of her last Twitter postings indicated she was looking forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day on Thursday with him.

“What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow???” she posted.

“We are all devastated. Her family is in shock,” Steenkamp’s agent, Sarita Tomlinson, told Reuters, in tears over the incident, which happened in the early hours of the morning.

“They did have a good relationship,” she said. “Nobody actually knows what happened.”

Track star

Pistorius, who races wearing carbon fibre prosthetic blades after he was born without a fibula in both legs, was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics and reached the 400 metre semi-finals in London 2012.

In last year’s Paralympics he suffered his first loss over 200 metres in nine years. After the race he questioned the legitimacy of Brazilian winner Alan Oliveira’s prosthetic blades, though he was quick to express his regret for the comments.

South Africa has some of the world’s highest rates of violent crime, and many home owners have weapons to defend themselves against intruders.

In 2004, Springbok rugby player Rudi Visagie shot dead his 19-year-old daughter after he mistakenly thought she was a robber trying to steal his car in the middle of the night.

Pistorius’s lavish home is in the heart of a large estate surrounded by a three-metre-high stone wall topped by an electric wire fence.

“It is difficult to imagine an intruder entering this community, but we live in a country where intruders can get in wherever they want to,” said one Silverlakes resident, who did not want to be named.

“Oscar is a good guy, an upstanding neighbour, and if he is innocent I feel for this guy deeply,” he said.

Pistorius did not answer his mobile phone on Thursday. His South African agent told Reuters he had not spoken to Pistorius but his lawyers were with him.

He is sponsored by British telecoms firm BT, sunglasses maker Oakley, sports apparel maker Nike and French designer Thierry Mugler.

“We are shocked by this terrible, tragic news. We await the outcome of the South African police investigation,” a BT spokeswoman said before Pistorius was charged.

A Nike spokesman in London said before hearing of the murder charge that the company was “saddened by the news, but we have no further comment to make at this stage”. -Reuters

Woman shot at Oscar’s house identified

Image

Pretoria – The woman shot dead at Paralympian Oscar Pistorius’s home early on Thursday has been identified as model Reeva Steenkamp, 30.

Shiri Reouveni, of Steenkamp’s PR agency, said they had been told it was Steenkamp who had been shot, but did not want to say more.

Asked if she could confirm if it was Steenkamp who was shot, she said: “Yes”.

They would issue a statement later.

Steenkamp was reportedly shot in the head and upper body in Pistorius’s home in the Silver Lakes Golf Estate in Boschkop.

A convoy of about 10 police cars arrived at the Boschkop police station in Pretoria following the shooting.

Oscar’s sister, Aimee, was among those arriving at the station.

Police said a case of murder has been opened.

“I can confirm to you that a 26-year-old suspect will be appearing in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court this afternoon following a shooting at Oscar Pistorius’ house,” Mogale said.

Police would not confirm who the suspect was as he had not yet appeared in court but Beeld newspaper earlier reported on its website that Pistorius had allegedly accidentally shot dead his girlfriend after mistaking her for a robber.

Police spokeswoman Captain Sarah Mcira confirmed this to Beeld. – Sapa

Dikwena Want Phala To Stay

Image

Platinum Stars are planning to keep Thuso Phala at the Phokeng-based club, despite the speculation linking the 26-year-old with an exit.

Phala has returned to the club following an impressive campaign with Bafana Bafana during the recent Africa Cup of Nations.  The former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns player was linked with a move back to the Amakhosi at some stage, following his rich vein of form.

However, news reaching the Siya crew is that the player is in coach Cavin Johnson’s plans and he sees him as a key player in his side.

“There has been a lot of speculation about Thuso going to Chiefs and stuff like that. Thuso has a contract that is running with Platinum Stars. If you ask me about Thuso and his current situation, I will state it clearly to you that the player has an obligation with Platinum Stars. Thuso is our star from the Afcon and no one gave him a chance,” said a source.

Phala’s contract with Stars ends in June. The Phokeng-based side is set to open talks with the player for a new deal. Recent reports linked the player with an overseas move.

Chippa Still Waiting On Maazou

Image

Moussa Maazou is yet to join Chippa United despite the club’s concerted effort to have the Niger international in their ranks.

The Chilli Boys have been waiting for Maazou’s arrival since the start of the season, with the Cape-based side claiming that they have already paid the transfer fee for the Niger captain.

Maazou was recently in South Africa for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and Chippa officials visited the player in Port Elizabeth during his stay. However, he has since returned home with the rest of the squad.

A well-placed source within the Chilli Boys camp told the Siya crew that Maazou was expected to start the second half of the season with the team.

“This Maazou issue is frustrating now. We booked him a ticket and arranged everything, expecting his arrival this past Saturday. He didn’t arrive. He is telling us about sorting out a few issues with the club he played for in Tunisia.

“Apparently, he is being owed money by that club. The whole thing is tiring. It’s not the first ticket that we have booked for the guy, wasting money in the process. We booked him a ticket to fly all the way from Niger. We are waiting for him.

“I suspect that something isn’t going well here. We paid the guy’s transfer fee long ago. The whole thing makes us look like clowns. It makes us look like we don’t know what we are doing,” said the source.

Maazou played for Etoile du Sahel in Tunisia. The player’s arrival in Cape Town has been delayed several times already, and it now appears that the club may finally give up on him.

Baxter: Dropping to second is not an issue

Image

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter insists he is not looking over his shoulder, despite the prospect of losing top spot if Orlando Pirates beat SuperSport United this evening.

Chiefs have been top of the League standings since the first day of the season but could surrender that top spot tonight if Pirates – who have not lost in 10 League matches – take advantage tonight and pick up maximum points, after Amakhosi and Mamelodi Sundowns played out a goalless draw last night.

“It is honestly immaterial that we have been leading in the League for such a long time because I know it was never going to mean we would win the League,” Baxter says.

“I know being second in the League for one round, two rounds, five rounds or 10 rounds doesn’t matter as long as at the end of the season when they are giving out the medals we are top of the League.”

Baxter says he only needs to make sure his team does not get uneasy even if they lose top spot tonight.

“We can do what we have to do only with the players that we have. We have to make sure that we are not nervous because ‘oh, now we second’ or ‘oh, now we are third’. We have to make sure we perform in every game and that is the main thing.

“Everything else is immaterial because it doesn’t matter. What matters is that when we cross the finish line we are first, that is what this whole season is all about – finishing first.

“Manchester City against Manchester United last season … City crept over the finish into first position on the last day and it didn’t matter that United had the history. Who is first or second now doesn’t matter and I am sure Pirates and Platinum Stars are thinking the same way. This is not rocket science.

“I am not looking over my shoulder yet but looking at my team and trying to prepare this team. I have to try to keep my eyes away from looking at other teams thinking about what they have and how many points they have and whatnot. If I am to do that I will drive myself crazy. I have got to try and get both eyes on trying to help my players achieve the maximum they can,” the coach adds.

Hunt slams ‘defensive Pirates’

Image

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt says only one team went out to play football at the Orlando Stadium last night, and it wasn’t Orlando Pirates.

The Buccaneers won the match 1-0 courtesy of Oupa Manyisa’s early goal – a result which takes them back to the top of the standings – but then missed a penalty and a number of chances.

MATCH REPORT: Orlando Pirates 1 SuperSport United 0

Hunt insists it was never a penalty, and also lamented Pirates’ defensive, counter-attacking style.

“I am very disappointed as we were the only ones who wanted to play; they were defensive and waited to catch us on the counter, even though they were playing at home,” he said after the match. “This is one of the reasons that our national team is struggling.”

On the penalty, Hunt adds: “They were awarded a penalty, but if it was a penalty then it should also have been a red card. So what does that say about a penalty?

Do you agree with Hunt’s views?

NUM to visit Marikana miners’ families

Image

Rustenburg – The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) intends visiting the families of Marikana miners killed last year, union president Senzeni Zokwana said on Wednesday.

“I will go visit the families of dead mines after the commission,” he told the Farlam commission of inquiry in Rustenburg.

“I am avoiding going to a place and saying something while I am under oath…. We care about the people.”

Tshepiso Ramphile, representing families of murdered security guards at the mine, concluded his cross-examination of Zokwana late  on Wednesday afternoon.

He said the NUM could have done more to protect miners and to avoid the deaths of 44 people during a violent strike in August.

During Wednesday’s proceedings, Zokwana defended the NUM’s decision, at the time of the strike, to tell its members to go to work to avoid losing their jobs.

During the cross-examination, he did not dispute calling Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa’s office for an additional deployment of police.

He said the reason for a police presence was to ensure law and order, and not to negotiate.

The commission heard that the situation at Marikana had been volatile and that workers had needed protection.

“NUM doesn’t have an army to go in when people are violent,” Zokwana said.

He said rumours and reports that the NUM was working with the mine had added to the NUM’s loss of control of its members.

“All the stories that the NUM was colluding with the employer added to us losing control,” Zokwana said.

“When violence was used it was difficult for us to call on shop stewards to return to work…. We did not only lose control, we lost lives.”

Ramphile wanted to establish whether the conduct of the NUM, its  members and officials was in the best interest of resolving the issues at the mine, and the nature of the NUM’s role in the strike violence.

The NUM had done a lot of good for miners, but the commission had been established to find out if weaknesses in the union had led  to the deaths of mineworkers, he said.

Ramphile asked Zokwana about the grades used to determine the wages of rockdrill operators.

Zokwana said the NUM was in talks with the Chamber of Mines to negotiate better wages for the rockdrill operators.

“We can deal with the industry. We have been engaging on the issue of grades,” he said.

Ramphile responded: “Could it be that the rockdrillers lost confidence?”

Zokwana said that before the union agreed to wage increases it consulted with its members, and rockdrill operators had agreed to the previous increase.

“I understand if rockdrillers were angry about these wages, but there should be ways of dealing with it. Violence is not the way to  deal with it,” Zokwana said.

The commission is probing the deaths of 44 people during an unprotected strike at Lonmin’s Marikana mine.

On August 16, 34 striking mineworkers were shot dead and 78 were injured when police opened fire while trying to disperse a group which had gathered on a hill near Lonmin’s Platinum mine in Marikana.

Ten people, including two police officers and two security guards, were killed near the mine in the preceding week.

Dali Mpofu, representing the miners injured and arrested during the strike, is expected to call his first witness to testify on Thursday.

Mpofu indicated that he would call a miner who was shot and injured on August 11.

Karel Tip, for the NUM, asked to re-examine Zokwana for clarity on one matter on Thursday morning. The commission was adjourned until 9.30am on Thursday. – Sapa
