Lekgwathi in hot water at Bucs

Football - 2013 MTN 8 Semi Final First Leg - Kaizer Chiefs v Orlando Pirates - FNB Stadium
Lucky Lekgwathi’s future at Orlando Pirates looks uncertain, after he was left out of the squad for tomorrow’s match against Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Bucs travel to Nelspruit for a Telkom Knockout last 16 clash with Amazayoni on Tuesday evening.

Lekgwathi has not seen any action for three matches, after claiming in his column in the Daily Sun that “sinister forces” were behind his omission from the squad for the MTN8 Final.

The club captain was then absent from Pirates’ CAF Champions League fixture against Esperance, although Roger de Sa insisted he left Lekgwathi out purely for footballing reasons.

But according to our sources at Pirates, Lekgwathi’s comments did not go down very well with club boss Irvin Khoza, and the veteran skipper was hauled before a club disciplinary committee.

‘Phinda Mzala’ has already sent a letter to the club apologising for his outburst.

“Lekgwathi has sent an official apology to the club about his statements made in one of the daily newspapers. The club is yet to respond and lay charges against the captain,” says our source in Parktown.

“He is not included in the squad to play Aces and will not be until he faces the club DC.”

Bucs administration manager Floyd Mbele insists he is not aware of any issues with regards to Lekgwathi as he was out of the office preparing visas for the team’s upcoming trip to Tunisia.

Women’s rights must be protected – ANCWL

cdba26129f794f0a952aba9258115b21
Johannesburg – The ANC Women’s League is calling for a party election manifesto with more women-orientated pillars, its president Angie Motshekga said on Monday.

“Our fundamental demand is that South Africa must be safe for women everywhere and at all times,” she told reporters in Johannesburg.

“Cultural practices and traditions that promote the violation of women’s rights must be abolished and these include, among others, ukuthwala, ukungena, and virginity testing.”

Ukuthwala is the practice of abducting girls and forcing them into marriage, often with the consent of their parents. Ukungena is where a widowed woman becomes her brother-in-law’s wife.

Motshekga was briefing the media about the ANCWL national election workshop, which was held at St George’s Hotel near Pretoria at the weekend.

She said women’s rights had to be understood in the context of human rights, and the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender community needed to be supported and protected.

Economic inclusion

The ANCWL wanted the ANC’s manifesto to commit to greater economic inclusion of women and comprehensive allocation of resources to help fight gender-based violence.

It also wanted a revised broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) policy, also with a commitment to gender equality, Motshekga said.

She acknowledged the improvement in access to justice through the Sexual Offences Courts, but expected similar improvements in maintenance courts.

“The ANCWL has full confidence in the ANC to deliver against these aspirations of the women of South Africa,” Motshekga said.

“The significant successes made in promoting gender quality and women’s empowerment are a clear testament to the commitment of the ANC to the struggle for a non-sexist and inclusive society.”

She said the ANCWL’s election campaign programme would include listening to, engaging and mobilising women from all sectors in society to register to vote in next year’s election.

MEC: Youth must stop doing drugs

2013_10$thumbimg107_Oct_2013_082952450-ll
The Northern Cape has the highest prevalence of pupils who have driven a vehicle on a public road after drinking alcohol. The province’s 24.7% is much higher than the national average of 7.8%.

The MEC for transport, safety and liaison, Mac Jack, revealed the statistics during his department’s transport month career expo at the Mitta Seperepere Convention Centre at the weekend.

About 200 young people were spoilt for choice on the career paths available in the South African Navy, SA Army, SA Air Force, SA Military Health and the South African Police Service. “As though this is not enough, our province had the highest prevalence of 17.9 % of pupils who had been threatened or injured by someone with a weapon.

“Our province is renowned for the unfortunate plague of high levels of alcohol and drug abuse among its youth. This is a sad story to tell,” said Jack.

He said the province only had about 2.2% of the South African population and yet was faced with devastating challenges facing the youth and pupils in particular.

“The provincial government and its police department will remain committed to taking action against the scourge of alcohol and substance abuse because of their devastating impact on individuals, families, communities and society as a whole,” Jack said.

He urged the youth in the province not to throw their futures away, but to choose career paths in the defence and state security institutions, “because they speak directly to the creation of a safe and secured country and could be very exciting if you put your passion and dedication into it.”

Cop dies in accidental shooting

1550824704
A police constable, who was found dead next to his car on the N2 near the Winkelspruit off-ramp, may have accidentally shot himself.

The officer, 33, who was alone and on his way to work at the Cato Manor police station on Monday morning, had been shot in the thigh.

It appears the officer, who was driving at the time of the incident, got out his vehicle and fell alongside his car where he bled to death.

Police are investigating the possibility that the officer’s state-issued firearm may have gone off accidentally and hit him in an artery.

The area around the body was cordoned off while crime scene investigating scoured for clues.

A relative, who works at a nearby school, arrived at the scene and was comforted by officers. She was too distraught to speak to the Daily News.

Teen charged for mom’s death ‘under love spell’

2576831169
Cape Town – An 18-year-old woman who has been charged with her mother’s murder was under a “love spell” cast by her boyfriend, family friends say.

Rosemary Theron worked as a professional clown and stilt-walker. She went missing in March and her body was found in September in a shallow grave in Strandfontein.

Phoenix Racing Cloud Theron, her boyfriend Kyle Maspero and Godfrey Scheepers appeared in the Simonstown Magistrate’s Court last week on a charge of murdering the 39-year-old mother.

A friend of the mother described how Maspero “went everywhere” with Phoenix and even answered questions for her, the Sunday Argus reported.

Another family friend said Maspero began taking control of the family after he and Phoenix moved to Cape Town from Knysna in February.

Phoenix and Maspero also apparently married while the search was still on for her mother’s body.

Maspero was described as troubled young man who was addicted to tik and whose mother committed suicide.

Phoenix’s father Ivan Claassen told the Sunday Times that he didn’t know how his daughter could have murdered her mother, but suspects that she and her boyfriend were mixed up with drugs.

Theron, Maspero and Scheepers are due to appear in court again on 10 October.

SA needs more traffic officers – summit

metro-police
Johannesburg – The country needs more traffic officers, standardised traffic norms, and faster eradication of potholes, a recent road traffic summit resolved.

“It was recommended that a common approach for the recruitment and selection of traffic law enforcement officers should be adopted and that more officers should be recruited…” transport department spokesperson Tiyani Rikhotso said in a statement on Monday.

A recommendation was made that traffic law enforcement should be applied consistently across the country. Conditions of employment of traffic officers needed to be reviewed.

“There is a need for the standardisation of norms and standards and capacity building for both traffic law enforcement officers and road safety practitioners across the country.”

The statement followed the traffic summit held in Boksburg on Friday and Saturday, with the aim of making the country’s roads safer.

New legislation should be developed to introduce technology to help combat driver fatigue and distraction in goods and passenger vehicles.

Delegates agreed that a system was needed to ensure potholes were fixed quickly.

In her closing remarks to delegates, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said the plan being developed would inform the Road Safety Strategy 2014-2019.

“While the actual strategy is being finalised, we can put into action some of the recommendations. Issues such as potholes can be attended to right away without delay,” she said.
