A man sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for stabbing his girlfriend

3 September 2024- A man (44) was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the De Aar Regional Court for assault with intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBV). On 2 November 2023, the accused, Richard Scheepers and the complainant/victim, Sarah Jansen (43), were drinking in town.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson in Northern Cape, Mojalefa Senokoatsane said, later in the day, they went home, where they started arguing over an R20 and the argument escalated.

“Scheepers got angry and stabbed Jansen with a knife several times in her face. The accused also picked up a rod and hit the victim on her right arm. The victim managed to run out of the house and ask for assistance.

“The police were contacted and the accused was arrested and charged. During the trial, the prosecution led by state prosecutor, Xolisa March, handed in a victim impact statement compiled by the complainant and facilitated by the Court Preparations Officer, Sinazo Ndletyana.

“In her statement, the complainant said she is finally free and can live her life again since the accused person has been in custody. During the trial state provided the court with the accused records, which showed and proved that the accused person had a previous conviction of murder in 2015, and that he was a repeat offender,” he said.

Senokoatsane further said in sentencing, the court found that there were no compelling and substantial circumstances to deviate from the prescribed sentence and sentenced the accused person to 15 years of direct imprisonment. He added that the NPA, envisages that these sentences will provide some justice and closure to the victims and their families and remove violent criminals from the streets.

“This sentence will also send a clear message to perpetrators of GBVF that, the prosecution is serious about fighting the scourge of abuse and killings of women,” said Senokoatsane.

Broos: “We believe in ourselves”

3 September 2024 – Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos wants to keep the momentum going when his charges begin their qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) this week. Broos’ charges open their AFCON account when they face Uganda at home at Orlando Stadium on Friday at 6pm, and then they travel to South Sudan to play their second match in the group on 10 September 2024.

The Belgian mentor said it was important to start the campaign on a positive note on Friday.

“When we go back to the last eight months of this year, at the beginning of the year, I think we can be very happy with the results of Bafana Bafana.

“We had a very good AFCON, and came back with a bronze medal. After that, a friendly game against Algeria (3-3), very good and then the games against Zimbabwe (3-1) and Nigeria (1-1) in the World Cup qualifiers, also we had very good results,” he said.

Broos further said that means, they are confident, and believe in themselves to start those qualifiers for AFCON 2025. He added that it is very important that when they play qualifiers, they have a good start.

“When you have a good start, you put pressure on your opponents. When you do not, it’s just the opposite. We have to try to avoid that. We had 20 players in training on the first day of camp on Monday and were awaiting the arrival of the outstanding three.

“Elias Mokwana was expected on Monday night, while Sphephelo Sithole and Siyabonga Ngezana are expected on Tuesday morning. Gates will open at 3pm on Friday, and tickets are priced at R30 (Children, Scholars and Student), R60 for Adults, and R140 for Family (2 adults + 2 children),” said Broos.

Meanwhile, the tickets are available at TicketPro, all Spar supermarkets (QuickSpar and SuperSpar), SASOL, ENGEN, SHELL, PowerFashion and JAM Clothing.

After facing Uganda at Orlando Stadium, Bafana Bafana will travel to South Sudan to play their second match in the group on Tuesday, 10 September 2024.

Broos’ team are in Group K where they have been pitted against Uganda, Congo and South Sudan. The two top finishers will qualify for the tournament to be hosted in Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.

Intensive rabies awareness and vaccination campaign

The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development launched an intensive rabies public awareness and vaccination campaign across the province. The launch commenced on 1 September 2024, and throughout the month, state veterinarians and veterinary animal health technicians, in collaboration with the South African Animal Health Association (SAAHTA), will be vaccinating dogs and cats against the deadly rabies disease.

The North West MEC for Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Madoda Samabatha said the campaign will reach its peak on 28 September 2024, which will mark the 18th World Rabies Day. Sambatha said this year’s commemoration will be observed under the theme: “Breaking Rabies Boundaries”.

“This theme takes centre stage as the urgency to break barriers and limitations that hinder the fight against the deadly disease remains the department’s priority.

“We have taken a stern action to drive awareness of rabies and to achieve the goal of eliminating the disease. There are numerous boundaries that prevent us from achieving zero infections and transmissions,” he said.

Sambatha further said this has therefore become their priority as a department to break those barriers by ensuring that they join forces with all the necessary stakeholders, including pet owners to prevent the disease and transmissions thereof. He added that their state veterinary clinics, vets and animal health technicians, are ready at times to serve the people and give recommendations to the public when needed.

“During this month, I encourage all pet owners to make use of the free vaccination and deworming services that are offered at various designated venues in all four districts.

“It is everyone’s responsibility, particularly pet owners to ensure that they closely observe their pets for symptoms of the disease,” said Sambatha.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Director for Veterinary Services, Dr Langa Madyibi, advised that behavioural changes in pets like, aggressiveness, dumbness, paralysis or partially paralysis, or excessive salivation should be taken seriously and that owners should have their pets diagnosed and treated by a qualified animal health professional.

“Rabies is a preventable Zoonotic viral disease, which is found in domestic and wild animals, and occasionally in humans. It is transmitted from animals to humans/animals through bites by infected animals.

“The rabies virus is found in the saliva of an infected animal. A human can be infected through broken skin or mucous membranes coming into contact with the infected animal,” he said.

More than 800 suspects nabbed during Operation Shanela

More than 800 suspects were arrested for various crimes during Operation Shanela. The suspects were arrested in conjunction with the police and other law enforcement agencies, including other role players.

The North West police spokesperson, Colonel Adele Myburgh said 5454 actions, included amongst others, 11 roadblocks, searching of 167 premises, 2 831 persons, 1 271 vehicles, closing of seven unlicensed liquor premises and inspection of 92 others. Myburgh further said, 35 Second-hand-dealers were inspected, as well as 74 formal and 26 informal businesses involved in hospitality and retail (to ensure Labour Law compliance).

“Numerous patrols and stop and search actions were also conducted. The suspects were among others, arrested for crimes such as 9 for aggravating robbery, 9 for murder, 8 for rape, 136 for assault with intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) and 72 for common assault.

“Four for house and business robberies, 35 for malicious damage to property, 25 for burglary at residential and business premises, 50 for possession of drugs, 11 for illegal possession of firearms, 9 for illicit mining and 15 for dealing in drugs,” she said.

Myburgh added that 15 suspects were arrested for illegal dealing in liquor, 7 for theft out of/from motor vehicle and 16 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. She said moreover, 87 suspected undocumented persons were taken in for processing by Immigration Officials. 

“Of the 851 suspects, 369 were apprehended during detectives’ suspect raiding operations. During the operations, a variety of drugs, eight cell phones, 10kg of copper, 9 firearms, 83 rounds of ammunition, 25 litres of fuel, liquor, tobacco products, 5 vehicles and other items were confiscated.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, thanked all role players for their continuous hard work and collaboration to ensure safer communities.

A murder case against a rapist and alleged murderer, Bakang Katong and co-accused back in court

A murder case against alleged murderer and convicted rapist, Bakang Katong (32) and his co-accused, Thabang Lenyai (23) and Katlego Mosimege (31), and Phenyo Katong (34), will resume at Taung Regional Court today. The accused persons were nabbed two years ago for allegedly killing Thabiso Mothibedi (35) in cold blood.

This comes after they accused Mothibedi of stealing R20 000 cash and cigarettes worth R600 from Katong’s house in Manthe village, near Taung.

The North West police spokesperson, Capt Sam Tselanyane said the preliminary investigation revealed that on 29 April 2022, the deceased was at Longaneng village in Taung, when the accused fetched and ferried him back to Manthe village.

“Upon arrival, the deceased was allegedly chained to a generator and assaulted. After the assault, the victim was reportedly transported to a local clinic by the accused, however, he was declared dead upon arrival. The accused were arrested and charged with murder,” Tselanyane said.

On 1 May 2022, the community members were up in arms and torched three houses and a bakkie belonging to Katong’s family.

Meanwhile, the court heard that there was a letter from the community members requesting that the murder case be transferred to the North West High Court in Mahikeng owing to its nature, however, that was not entertained.

It is alleged that the state is set to call seven witnesses, while the accused persons will call four witnesses. There were also allegations that the accused persons intended to plead guilty. However, it is yet unknown if that is still their intention.

North West province launches Tourism Month

The North West Department of Economic Development, Environment Conservation, and Tourism (DEDECT) in collaboration with North West Parks and Tourism (NWP&TB), is excited to announce the launch of Tourism Month 2024. The department held a special event revealing the province’s plans and initiatives for this year’s celebration, embarking on a month-long journey to highlight the significance of tourism in the platinum province.

The North West MEC for Department of Economic Development, Environment Conservation, and Tourism (DEDECT), Bitsa Lenkopane said Tourism Month, celebrated annually in September, plays a crucial role in showcasing the importance of the tourism sector to the South African economy and its contribution to job creation. Lenkopane said this year, the theme for Tourism Month is: “Tourism and Peace – 30 Years of Connecting People, Places, and Culture.”

“The theme reflects the enduring impact of tourism in fostering connections and understanding across diverse communities over the past three decades. Attendees at the launch event had the opportunity to engage with industry experts and explore how the province is poised to enhance its tourism offerings to both local and international visitors.

“This month is not just a celebration, it is a powerful reminder of the richness that lies in our diverse landscapes, our vibrant wildlife, biodiversity, cultures and our warm, welcoming people. From the golden savannas of the Pilanesberg to the beautiful Magaliesberg, and the tranquil waters of the Hartbeespoort Dam, from the historical significance of the Taung World Heritage Site, to the vibrant rhythm of our local communities, to the hunting area of the province. North West is a province that tells a story like no other,” she said.

Lenkopane further said the public should join them as they have the power of tourism to bring people together and promote peace through shared experiences. She added that they are looking forward to their participation in making Tourism Month 2024, a resounding success.

“As we launch this month of celebration, I urge everyone of us to become ambassadors of this beautiful province. Let us share the stories of our unique destinations, promote our local businesses, and invite the world to experience the magic of the North West province.

“Tourism is more than just visiting places, but it’s about connecting with people. It’s reflected in the laughter of children playing in the village, the wisdom shared by our elders, the creativity of our artisans and the warm greetings from our local guides,” said Lenkopane.

She said these are the moments where visitors truly experience the unique essence of the North West as a destination. Lenkopane said South Africa, like most other countries, is currently navigating a period marked by significant challenges and opportunities.

“As the global community recovers and rebuilds from the effects of recent global events, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism industry has shown signs of gradual recovery.

“From 2021 to 2023, international arrivals increased from 415 million in 2021 to 917 million in 2022, and 1.286 billion in 2023. Despite this upward trend, the overall growth from 2019 to 2023, still reflects a 12% decline, indicating that the industry has not yet fully returned to its pre-pandemic levels,” she said.
