A young US woman who allegedly bit her bulldog during a drunken argument with her mother was charged with animal cruelty and domestic battery, police said on Monday.

Neighbours called police after hearing loud screaming and pounding coming from the family home in Lake in the Hills, Illinois.

Police said 19-year-old Analise Garner hit and scratched her mother’s face and bit her on the right hand during the altercation.

The family’s 80-pound English bulldog had three bite marks on its back that were visible through its white fur.

“The bulldog finally did bite her back in self-defence,” said Sergeant Mike Smith.

“There were no charges against the dog,” he quipped.

Garner, who was taken to hospital for treatment of the dog’s defensive bite, was also charged with underage drinking. She was released on $3 000 bond. – Sapa-AFP

Union ordered to pay workers R200k!!!

br nestlee 2404 (24830362)

The Pietermaritzburg High Court has hit the Food and Allied Workers Union with a hefty damages penalty for failing to champion the rights of two retrenched workers.

The workers, M Ndlela – who has since died – and M Mkhize, were sales representatives at Nestlé when they were retrenched in May 2002.

They argued they were unfairly dismissed as they were not told earlier about the retrenchments or that they were necessary because the company was restructuring certain divisions.

The two workers sued the union for failing to refer their cases to the Labour Court.

Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Kevin Swain ruled that the union had acted negligently and ordered that Ndlela and Mkhize be paid just over R100 000 each in damages.

He ordered that the union pay annual interest of 15 percent on the damages amount from August 2004, the date the summons was issued.

The union also has to pay Ndlela’s and Mkhize’s considerable costs of the application except the costs of one adjournment in 2009 as this was at the workers’ request.

According to evidence before the court, when Ndlela and Mkhize heard rumours from another employee of their possible dismissal, they went to a union office to fill in forms to have their membership reinstated.

However, their monthly union fees were not deducted from their salary. They enquired about this and a union representative assured them that their membership was guaranteed.

The union disputed the workers’ statement.

It said the men were chased away when they approached the union’s office to reapply because they had not followed the correct procedures.

Judge Swain rejected the union’s version of events as it was inconsistent and found that the men were proper members of Fawu.

Mkhize testified that after he was retrenched, a union representative referred to only as ‘‘Dhlomo’’ informed him that his and Ndlela’s cases had been referred to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

The matter was not resolved by the CCMA and was meant to be referred to the Labour Court. The union failed to do this.

Judge Swain said there had been an inordinate delay by the union in dealing with the cases as it failed to take any action for two years.

“The certificate of non-resolution was issued by the CCMA in June 2002 and the union was obliged to refer the workers’ cases to the Labour Court within 90 days.’’

‘‘Nothing, however, was done, with the only excuse being that the legal officer was ill in hospital and the files were locked in an office that no one had access to.

“In April 2004, the workers were advised that the union was no longer prepared to proceed with the case,” the judge said.

The union said it had decided not to proceed after attorney Jay Surju gave a legal opinion that the two retrenchments had not been unfair.

Judge Swain said that had the cases been sent to the Labour Court, Ndlela and Mkhize would have been successful in proving that their dismissals were unfair. – The Mercury

Hunt: Benni got away with murder!!!

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt says his team “totally dominated” Orlando Pirates on Tuesday, but the referee spoilt it for them.

Bucs won 2-1 on the night, but Hunt is adamant his charges didn’t deserve to lose had it not been for the referee Robert Sithole, who was also the man in charge when the two sides met in the first round when Pirates won 3-0.

“Shambolic display and I don’t have to tell you by who … it is an absolute disgrace. It is amazing that we got the same officials as we did in the first round. We should have had two penalties in the first round. It baffles me; I thought we moved on from this,” Hunt fumes.

“There was only one team in the game and that was us, but there will always be someone who will spoil it for us. It is worse than playing in the [CAF] Champions League.

“Benni should have been sent off in the first half when he went over the ball on Morgan [Gould] but nothing happened. He got away with murder.”

SuperSport midfielder Edwin Gyimah was later sent off after a coming together with Andile Jali, which saw the Ghanaian direct a slap toward his opponent, but Hunt has defended the player’s action saying his players were “despondent” because of the way the referee handled the match.

“What do you expect the players to do? Eventually something is gonna happen and we suffered at the end of the day. But we were magnificent and the much better side. We totally dominated,” Hunt insists.

Labour brokers are not human traffickers!!!

Cosatu march over labour brokers

CAPE TOWN – A labour expert on Tuesday said labelling labour brokers as human traffickers is wrong.

Cosatu’s Patrick Craven made the remark in a statement released by the trade union federation.

Craven said labour brokers are making huge profits by hiring out employees like commodities.

However labour analyst Tony Healy disagreed and said they help create jobs.

“They tend to use more employees than they would use if they were to employ those employees directly.”

Meanwhile, responding to Craven’s statement about 30 percent of the work force being casualise, Healy said, “Actualisation per say is not unlawful. There will be times when certain employers over weekend will employ casuals. I don’t think it is right to criticise that because any employment when u are unemployed is a good thing.”

Tshwane has new metro police chief!!!

Steven Ngobeni is the new sheriff in town.

Barry Bateman | 02 May 2012PRETORIA: Eyewitness News confirmed on Wednesday that the Tshwane municipality appointed Steven Ngobeni as its new chief of metro police, despite the fact he was never interviewed for the job.

In March, Eyewitness News reported that Ngobeni was already chosen to take up the position, raising concerns over the appointment process.

While the Tshwane municipality is keeping very quiet on the matter, senior Tshwane metro police sources confirmed Ngobeni’s appointment.

Suspended deputy chief Ndumiso Jaca was tipped to be appointed as the new chief and was shortlisted in the interview process.

Jaca was ruled out, following an Eyewitness News investigation that led to criminal charges.

Ngobeni however did not apply for the job.

The new chief started his career as a security guard in the old Pretoria municipality, before he became a metro constable.

He skipped several ranks.

After his promotion to commander he was ranked as director and now chief.

‘Mugabe will name a successor after elections’

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.

JOHANNESBURG – Sources from President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF told a prominent newspaper there, that he will only name a successor after elections.

Issues of succession rose in Malawi in the wake of President Bingu wa Mutharika’s death in April, and the same concerns have resonated in Zimbabwe, with President Mugabe being the only president since the country gained independence from colonial rule in 1980.

Mugabe, who turned 88 in February, has insisted that elections be held this year, although he recently appears to have agreed that a referendum on a new constitution will have to be held first.

Under the terms of a 2008 power-sharing deal between Zanu-PF and Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change, a referendum on a new constitution is supposed to be held before elections.

After the referendum, the bill will probably go before Parliament in January 2013, legal watchdog Veritas has said previously.

The two main contenders for Mugabe’s post are Defence Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa and Vice President Joyce Mujuru.

Both have insisted in April, that they do not plan to run for presidency, with Mujuru saying she would not do so while Mugabe was in power.

The respected Zimbabwe Standard reported that Mujuru made that statement became Mugabe previously told Mnangagwa and Mujuru to stop plotting against each other in the run-up to polls.

The Sunday newspaper claims that sources in Zanu-PF said the president would only name his successor after the elections, which he is determined to win.

One official is reported to have said Mugabe would even be willing to enter into another coalition deal, as long as he remained president.

We will miss Shiceka’s energy – Zuma!!!!

The late Minister of Cooperative Governance Sicelo Shiceka.

JOHANNESBURG – President Jacob Zuma on Monday said he will miss the energy of former Cooperative Governance Minister Sicelo Shiceka.

The African National Congress (ANC) confirmed his death on Monday morning.

The last year of his life was plagued by controversy after he was accused of corruption and abusing state funds.

He was placed on sick leave in February 2011, although the nature of illness was never disclosed.

In October 2011, President Jacob Zuma announced that Shiceka had been replaced.

This was prompted by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s findings that Shiceka had abused public funds.

It had emerged the late minister spent R600 000 on luxury travel, which included an overseas visit to his former lover, who was imprisoned in a Swiss jail.

Shiceka remained defiant to the end and insisted the findings of maladministration did not undermine his credibility.

The Democratic Alliance’s Mmusi Maimane said, “The allegations against him were quite strong. His performance was certainly not the best. But we really are sending our condolences to the family.”

Shiceka’s profile

Born on 8 June 1966, Shiceka was involved in politics at a very young age.

He became the leader of the Azanian Students Organisation in 1987.

By 1991, he had taken up a position as provincial secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and provincial secretary of Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in 1992.

After South Africa became a democracy, Shiceka became a member of the Gauteng Provincial Executive Council of the ANC.

He was also a director of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee.

Academically, Shiceka attained degrees in Arts, Political Economy and diplomas in Labour Relations and Economics.

Some of the tertiary institutions he attended were the University of the Free State, Wits, and Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in America.

He was most notably known for his position in the National Assembly as the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

Downs go top!!!

Source:

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to the top of the Absa Premiership table, when they downed Santos 3-1 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Wayne Sandilands made a return in between the poles for ‘The Brazilians’, while captain fantastic, Teko Modise missed the match as he is still nursing a knock he picked up in the match against Maritzburg United. Veteran Midfielder and Zimbabwean International Esrom Nyandoro captained the side and did so with flying colours.

Nyasha Mushekwi almost broke the deadlock within five minutes of kickoff, when he met Lebohang Mokoena’s well taken corner kick but sent his header slightly wide.

Mokoena and Punch Masenamela were proving to be a handful for the Santos defence on the left flank, with their neat touches which caused all sorts of problems for the visitors.

In the 20th minute the pair combined well to lay the ball back for Hlompo Kekana, who switched play to the right and found Elias Pelembe and the skilful Mozambican drove in a powerful cross which was deflected for an own goal by Santos defender, Pere Ariweriyai to give Sundowns the lead.

A few minutes later Mushekwi almost doubled Sundowns’ lead after connecting well with a cross by Walter Maponyane, who made a spirited run down the right flank.

Pelembe and Mokoena switched sides and Pelembe operated the left side, while Mokoena on the right dished the same devastating pace for the visitors, who were struggling to keep tabs on the speedy player.

Mushekwi was not to be denied for the third time and rose above everyone to slot Sundowns’ second goal in the 38th minute after meeting Mokoena’s well delivered cross.

Nyandoro took the responsibility of being captain in his strides, as he marshalled the midfield like a commander and lead by example in defending and attacking to prove why Coach Neeskens has put so much faith in him.

Sundowns had the lion share of ball possession for most of the first half and the match went into the halftime break with ‘The Brazilians’ leading by two goals.

In the 63rd minute Maponyane hit a long pass from the right to find Cheeseboy, who and the nippy player combined well with Kekana, knitting together a series of beautiful touches before Kekana hit a screamer that left the Santos goalkeeper left for dead, giving ‘Bafana Ba Style’ a 3-0 lead.

In the 68th minute Coach Neeskens made his first substitution of the match and brought in Musa Nyatama for Mokoena, who received a standing ovation from the crowd in attendance as he made his way off the pitch.

Santos pulled one back in the 75th minute through their danger-man Eleazar Rodgers to give the visitors some hope of a comeback.

Coach Neeskens made another change in the 79th minute bringing in Richard Henyekane for Pelembe, who was a headache to deal for the Santos defence.

For most of the second half the visitors struggled to get around the wall of resistance created by Nyandoro and ‘The Rock’ Kekana in the middle of the park, forcing the Cape side to resort to long balls and attacking via the flanks. That did not work too well either for the visitors because the Sundowns defence took no prisoners on the day.

Nyasha made way for Samuel Julies in the in the 87th minute of the match and by then match was done and dusted, resulting in Sundowns going back on top of the Absa Premiership table on goal difference.

Themba Zwane earned himself the man of the match award, with his work rate and overall contribution to the match.

Starting eleven:

Wayne Sandilands, Walter Maponyane, Clayton Daniels, Siyanda Xulu, Punch Masenamela, Esrom Nyandoro, Themba Zwane, Hlompho Kekana, Lebohang Mokoena (Musa Nyatama), Elias Pelembe (Richard Henyekane), Nyasha Mushekwi (Samuel Julies).

Subs:

Calvin Marlin, Surprise Moriri, Method Mwanjale, Thembinkosi Mdledle, Musa Nyatama, Richard Henyekane, Samuel Julies
