THE case against three suspects was postponed until 08 October 2015 by Lehurutshe Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Jacintah Mohasoa  (51), Kedifentse  Stephen (34),  and  Zandile  Sukazi  (33) appeared in Lehurutshe Magistrates’ Court for possession of  suspected stolen property Mohasoa and Sukazi were released on R1 500 bail each while Stephen received R3 000 bail.

Stephen was granted R3 000 bail because she has another criminal case pending against her.

North West police spokesperson, sergeant Kelebogile Moleko said the suspects were arrested on Tuesday after members of Vehicle Identification Section (VIS) in Lehurutshe received information about suspected stolen blue Range Rover en route to Zambia.   “The members were on patrol when they spotted the vehicle, and followed it until at Swartkopfontein Port of Entry where it was stopped. The vehicle had three women occupants inside. Upon questioning, the driver alleged that she was the fiancée of the vehicle’s owner.

“The owner was called and he informed the police that his vehicle was stolen in Sandton on Friday last week. The trio was then arrested and according to the information received, the suspects initially gave the police false information that they were on a business trip to Botswana although documents found inside their luggage indicated that they were travelling to Lusaka, Zambia,” she said.

The police also found five cellphones and fraudulent documents in their possession.  Preliminary investigation was conducted and established that a case of theft of motor vehicle was reported at Sandton Police Station.

Stephen was also linked to another case of Theft of a Land Cruiser in Middleburg.

R2K campaign welcomes Macia murder case ruling

The Right2Know Campaign welcomes Judge Bert Bam’s ruling on taxi driver Mido Macia’s murder case. R2K organization said they are elated that eight police officers accused of murdering Macia were found guilty on Tuesday.

R2K campaign spokesperson, Murray Hunter said: “We hope that the sentence in September will send a strong message that in a democracy, police brutality has no place.”

Macia was dragged behind a police van for about 200 meters while handcuffed. He died in police custody in February 2013.

“We believe this also shows the importance of citizen journalism and the right to film and photograph the police. The brutal attack on Mido Macia was first exposed when a bystander filmed the incident on his or her phone and sent the footage to The Daily Sun. If this footage had never come to light, would we even know Mido Macia’s name?” Hunter said.

R2K calls on ordinary people on every street corner to exercise vigilance and be ready to document police brutality and other rights violations whenever they happen.

Those wishing to know more about the right to film the police can download an advisory at www.r2k.org.za/filmthepolice
