KIMBERLEY MAN ARRESTED FOR THEFT OF CELL PHONE SIGNAL BATTERIES

A 44 year-old man was arrested for stealing batteries from a cellphone signal tower near N12 in Kimberely. The police members reacted promptly to a call regarding a possible house breaking on Koppie Enkel, on N12 just outside Kimberley.

 

Northern Cape police spokesperson, lieutenant Olebogeng Tawana said the police spotted a red double cab Toyota bakkie at the scene.

 

“The bakkie sped-off from the scene when they noticed the police were on their trail. A high speed chase ensued between the police and the suspects.Two of the suspects fled the scene on foot and one suspect was arrested.

 

“During investigation, 11 cellphone signal tower batteries were found loaded in the back of the bakkie’s loading bin and 13 batteries on the back seat. The value of batteries recovered is estimated to R1 million,” he said.

 

The suspect appeared before the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on a charge of possession of suspected stolen goods.

 

Investigation continues.

Hartswater woman nabbed with mandrax

A 36-year-old woman was arrested after she was found in possession of 145 mandrax tablets, worth R6000 in street value. The woman was arrested on Wednesday, while boarding a taxi from Kimberley to Hartswater.

Northern Cape police said an information was received from a public member about a woman, who was about to board a taxi on N12 in Kimberley to Hartswater. The police reacted promptly to the information, and the woman was found inside the taxi. Police spokesperson, lieutenant Olebogeng Tawana said, and she allegedly dropped a plastic bag containing mandrax under the seat on which she was seated after realising police are on her tail.

“She is expected to appear before the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Monday. A case of being in possession of mandrax was opened,” Tawana said.

The Kimberley Cluster Commander Major General Jean Abrahams lauds the contribution of the members of the community in the fight against crime.

“Crime can only be uprooted within our communities when the communities become part of forces that eradicates crime within the neighbourhood”, she said.

Investigation continues.

‘Tubatse residents demand answers from Anglo Mines’

THE COMMUNITY leader in Greater Tubatse community said they have been denied their right to protest by the Greater Tubatse Local Municipality and Anglo Platinum Mines.

 

Elton Thobejane said that they will not stop them from protesting. “The community is going ahead with the protest but we will do it in a form of a picket. We will be picketing outside the municipality offices from there and then move to Anglo Platinum Mines and picket from 01:00pm until 03:00pm.
“We are picketing against Land grabbing by Anglo Platinum Mines. The mining company is illegally mining on the land we are using for farming. The community is not happy about this because we were not properly informed that the land has been sold off to the mining company.
“Our right to protest was denied at section 4 meeting that was called yesterday. The meeting was attended by the chief municipal manager, Mohlala and Safety Liaison Manager, traffic police; SAPS cluster Commander Maepa, public participation manager, municipality legal adviser, Anglo Platinum’s Lebang Gaobepe and ward councillor, Mphofele. Mohlala insisted that we should address and discuss the memorandum at the section 4 meeting and we refused,” Thobejane said.

 

He said they were asked to tell them what the march is about, but were not willing to address their memorandum at that meeting. Thobejane said this led to a big debate, and the mine representative said they cannot protest because it’s short notice to them. “We informed them that we have given enough time to plan all the logistics as we had submitted our notification on the 23rd of August 2015. This is more than the 10 days’ notice required by the Regulation of Gatherings Act. But Gaobepe insisted that we can’t march and as a result we were told that we did not have ‘permission’ to protest,” he said.
The community leader said this becomes a norm in Limpopo as it is not the first time where municipal managers insists that aggrieved people must discuss their memorandum in a section 4 meeting with the mines in order to stop people from protesting.  “The memorandum is a political matter between us and the mining company. The municipality does not have a legal right to involve itself in what demands we are making of the company.

 

“Our picket will be supported by the Right2Know Campaign, which continues to fight to ensure our democratic right to protest is respected. We will not be silenced. The right to organise, protest and speak out is central to all community struggles for social justice,” he concludes.

‘Torrential rains hit Lichtenburg’

The Democratic Alliance in Lichtenburg  convey their message of support and thoughts to everybody who was affected by a hail storm that hit the area last night, Thursday 3 September 2015. The DA said they have already started an on-site investigation and can report that houses, buildings hosting national companies and various small businesses suffered infrastructure- and water-damage due to the severity of the storm.

DA Jacqueline Theologo said the economic hub of Lichtenburg was hit the worst and the town’s newly built mall, banks, retail stores, offices as well as smaller businesses flooded, lost their roofs and it is alleged that, in some cases, businesses will suffer further financial losses while repairing buildings.

“The DA can confirm that the roof of the hall at the local high school has considerable damage, hence making the building unsafe. Water damage was also reported at other schools in the area. At 8:00 Friday, the hail was lying as deep as 30cm at places,” Theologo said.

Local DA councillors will visit the disaster struck areas during the course of the week and conduct their own in-depth investigation.

“We will furthermore oversee that the Ditsobotla Municipality follow the disaster management plan as prescribed in the Disaster Management Act of 2002. The DA will urge them, in writing, to inform the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality of the storm. The local councillors will also monitor to ensure the District Municipality does a proper assessment of all damages,” she said.

According to the Disaster Management Act, the District Municipality must determine whether it was indeed a disaster. Then the necessary contingency plans and emergency procedures that is applicable must be initiated.

The DA said they will also oversee that efforts are initiated to assess the magnitude and severity of the storm as soon as possible.

Ditsobotla municipal spokepserson, Pius Batsile confirmed that the torrential rains caused damages that worth R1m and as the municipality, they monitoring situation.

MEC for Tourism Department in the North West Desbo Mohono will on Tuesday, lead the department’s celebrations of the 2015 Tourism Month in Marikana near Rustenburg. Mohono is expected to amongst other things unveil activities for the Tourism month and narrate in details, systems put in place by the department to promote tourism in Villages, Townships and Small Dorpies.

This year’s Provincial Tourism month is celebrated under the theme “A Re Yeng Bokone Bophirima where a million New Experiences lie a Sho’t Left Away”

Pretoria accident leaves man critically injured

A man is in a critical condition after a side – impact accident along Steve Biko Road in Pretoria at around 00h59 this morning.

Reports from the scene indicate that the one vehicle struck the other vehicle on the passenger door.

Netcare 911 paramedics arrived and found that the one person had sustained life-threatening injuries. The advanced life support paramedics and his crew worked tirelessly to stabilise the critically wounded man at the scene before transporting him to a specialised facility for the care that he required.

‘Communities laud provincial government over Setsokotsane programme’

Residents of Boskop farm and Promosa Ext 3 outside Ikageng township in Potchefstroom say Setsokotsane is a good approach for accomplishment of speedy and better delivery of services. This was said recently as residents braved the chilly and wet weather for Setsokotsane service delivery outreach, which is being implemented in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District’s Tlokwe Local Municipality.

One of the locals, Josephine Maila, 20, a mother of two, who does not have an ID, expressed her happiness after submitting her application for a Smart Identity card to the Department of Home Affairs.

“Life is going to be a lot better soon. I will be able to apply for the child support grant for my daughters, look for a job and provide for my children. I am happy to have benefited from Setsokotsane which came to our area”, said Josephine.

Some of the services provided during the outreach included amongst others, registration of unemployed youth on the provincial database, bursary applications, health screening services, vaccination of domestic animals and processing of social grants applications.

Premier Supra Obakeng Ramoeletsi Mahumapelo says through implementation of Setsokotsane, the Province shall continue and intensify its efforts in making the government felt by people.

“The Setsokotsane integration and convergence approach employs government efforts to accelerate service delivery as departments, municipalities and state owned entities bring the much needed services to the people, for radical socio – economic transformation and better livelihood to be realised”, maintains Premier Mahumapelo.

The second week of Setsokotsane in Tlokwe Local Municipality will see services being taken to various areas as follows:

Tuesday, 08 September, the service delivery outreach will be in Matlwang village

Thursday, 10 September, the service delivery outreach will be in Lindequestdrift Ward 2

Friday, 11 September the service delivery outreach will be in Klipdrift Ward 3

On Saturday, 12 September, a unique Cultural Street Festival and Exhibition will be staged at Memorial Park, Ikageng township, and will be attended by local farmers and artists who will showcase their products and the economic benefits of Agriculture, Culture and Tourism which have been positioned as strategic drivers of the province’s economy.

Teen pregnancies hit 99 000 a year

The number of schoolgirls falling pregnant every year is rising and rising.

Stats SA figures indicate that in 2013 the number of schoolgirls impregnated reached 99 000 – which translates to 271 girls for every day of the year. 

In 2012, the number was 81 000 and in 2011 68 000. 

The department of education’s Elijah Mhlanga said: “It is an alarming situation, and is unheard of.” 

He called on all parents, guardians and schools to work together to solve the problem with the department. 

Perhaps more shocking is that among the impregnators of these 99 000 are some of the educators who should be helping to solve the problem, but instead they are perpetrators.

Bafana walloped by minnows, Mauritania

A 10-man Bafana Bafana were put to sword by Mauritania in an Africa Cup of Nations encounter on Saturday which leaves coach Shakes Mashaba’s charges with a mountain to climb if they are to qualify for Gabon 2017.

Going into the match on the back of goalless draw against Gambia at home, Mashaba knew the importance of getting back to winning ways and put the qualification back on track.

But two big moments meant South Africa would find the going tough in blazing heat in Mauritania.

First, captain Itumeleng Khune gifted the hosts with an easy goal before debutant Siyabonga Zulu was given the red card soon after resumption after he was adjudged to have committed a professional foul.

The hosts were the first to threaten in the very first minute but captain and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune pushed the cross to safety.

Mauritania took the lead in the 5th minute when Khune was beaten by a long range shot, slipped out of Khune’s hands into the net. That was an early and unexpected setback for Bafana Bafana who sat back in the opening minutes.

Much as Khune’s howler was unexpected, the visitors really struggled in stifling heat and hardly conjured up any opening in the opening 45 minutes.

For most of the first half, it was the home team which looked comfortable on the ball and created a handful of gilt-edged chances.

Bafana Bafana then suffered a huge setback moments into the second half when Siyabonga Zulu was shown the red card for what the Senegalese referee deemed a professional foul meaning South Africa had to play the entire second half with 10 men.

In the 65th minute, substitute Bongani Zungu who came in for Dean Furman could have done better when he ballooned the ball over the bar from inside the box with only the keeper to beat.

There was a glimmer of hope in the 69th minute when Thamsanqa Gabuza headed the ball into the net when he responded ahead of two defenders to make it 1-1.
Moments later, Gabuza made a run on the right before making a telling cross on the 73rd minute but the hosts defence stood firm.

Despite being a man down, it was the visitors who showed great urgency and purpose but the disadvantage of a man down meant they could not pour forward and leave gaps at the back. And it had to tell when Erick Mathoho was left for the dead by Babacar Bagili who slotted the ball past Khune.

It was soon 3-1 when Diakite Ismael weaved past the entire South African defence before slotting the ball past Khune.

Ntsiki Mazwai calls women in ANC ‘panties’, ‘idiots’

JOHANNESBURG – Singer and poet Ntsiki Mazwai on Saturday tweeted that she thinks women who support ANCYL are ‘idiots’.

This followed an announcement of the new ANCYL top five leadership that included only one woman.

 

Mazwai cited a picture of scantily-clad women who wore the ANCYL logo on their buttocks at an ANCYL rally last year.
