North Gauteng High Court Judge, Portial Phahalane who is facing corruption and money laundering charges grated R50 000 bail

By KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

26 November 2025- A sitting Judge of the North Gauteng High Court, Portia Phahlane (57), the leader of the International Pentecost Holiness Church, Mike Sandlana (64),  the current spokesperson for the church, Vusi Ndala (49) and Kagiso Phahlane (32), briefly appeared in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court today following an operation conducted last night, 25 November 2025 by the Serious Corruption Investigation assisted by the National Intervention unit of the SAPS, which resulted in their arrest on charges of corruption and money laundering.  The court additionally charged the four with the doctrine of common purpose.

The Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale said the takedown operation stems from serious allegations of corruption involving attempts to influence a civil case currently before the Pretoria High Court. Mogale said the matter relates to a well-known South African church embroiled in a long-standing succession dispute.

“It is alleged that a presiding judge received gratification from the main accused in exchange for delivering a favourable judgment in the succession matter. This prosecution led investigation has further uncovered the involvement of three additional suspects in the alleged corruption and money laundering scheme. As a result, warrants of arrest were authorised for the identified individuals.

“The investigation revealed a money trail amounting to millions which allegedly exchanged hands amongst the accused. The four have appeared in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 26 November 2025, where Portia Phahlane was granted R50 000 on seven counts, Kagiso Phahlane R10 000 on two counts and five counts on Vusi Ndala with R10 000.  The trio’s case was postponed to 6 March 2026,” she said.

Mogale further said the accused persons were given strict bail conditions such as to attend court at the set date. She added that they were also instructed not to interfere with police investigation or witnesses directly or indirectly.

“The accused persons should hand over their passports and all other travel documents no later than 4pm on 28 November 2025 to the Investigating Officer (IO). They are prohibited from applying for travel documents. Accused are cautioned not to commit similar offences whilst on bail.

“Additionally, the judge is prohibited from entering the High court premises of both new and old buildings. Breach of bail conditions without cause, the accused’s bail will be revoked and a warrant for their arrests authorised for execution. An application for postponement was put forward by the State, wherein the presiding officer, found in favour of the postponement,” said Mogale.

She said the case against Mike Sandlana was postponed for seven days for formal bail application. Mogale said his case will continue on 3 December 2025, for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the acting National Head of the DPCI, Lieutenant General Siphosihle Nkosi, welcomed the arrests and commended the collaborative effort between the Hawks and the NPA. Nkosi said this demonstrates the DPCI’s unwavering commitment to tackling corruption at all levels.

“The meticulous work by the Serious Corruption Investigation team, supported by our partners in the National Prosecuting Authority, reflects the strength of our collective resolve. We will continue to pursue all those who abuse positions of trust and undermine the rule of law,” he said.

A man sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for murder

By REGINALD KANYANE

26 November 2025- The SAPS management in the ZF Mgcawu District welcomed the sentence handed to a man (48) for murder by the Keimoes Regional Court. The incident occurred on 10 August 2024, when the deceased, Cedric Pretoors (25) had a braai with his family at home, and the accused Denzil Bosman arrived and entered the yard.

The ZF Mgcawu District police spokesperson, Sergeant Omphile Masegela said the deceased reprimanded the accused as there was a protection order, restricting him to enter the premises. Masegela said an argument ensued between the deceased and the accused.

“The accused took out a knife and stabbed the deceased on his head, and the blade of the knife broke and remained lodged on the head of the deceased. The deceased was hospitalised and ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The case was assigned to Warrant Officer Abraham Johnson for further investigation. He reconstructed the scene and retraced the steps as the incident was not reported prior to death.

“The suspect was traced and arrested by Warrant Officer Schalk Oberholster and Sergeant Victor Katz. His bail was successfully opposed and later granted after an appeal. The trial was heard in the Keimoes Regional Court and the accused was found guilty of murder and was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment,” she said.

Masegela further said the commendable work by the members was acknowledged by the District Commissioner of ZF Mgcawu, Major General Monica Sebili, recognising the investigating officer who continuously produces excellent convictions.

Four suspects arrested for corruption and money laundering

26 November 2025- The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team based at the Head Office has arrested four suspects, the Judge, the leader of a well-known church and two others aged between 32 and 64 on charges of corruption and money laundering during an operation conducted last night. Committee concerned about unresolved allegations of discriminatory admission practices

By KEDIONE MOLAETSI

26 November 2025- The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education has expressed concern over unresolved allegations of racial profiling and discriminatory practices in school admissions in the Western Cape. The committee on Tuesday received a briefing from the Department of Basic Education (DBE) on its performance in the first and second quarters of this financial year.

The Chairperson of the Committee, Joy Maimela said members stressed that these allegations are neither new nor vague and were formally presented during a previous meeting attended by the department. Maimela said the committee reminded the department that it had been explicitly instructed to investigate the allegations and report back.

“The committee does not accept the department’s response that it cannot proceed without individual cases being provided by the committee. The parents’ complaints were recorded months ago.

“The committee’s directive was aimed at determining whether patterns in school admissions suggest that certain schools are effectively reserved for particular races. With the academic year ending, the committee has been overwhelmed with placement complaints,” she said.

Maimela further said the department must clarify its position unambiguously. She added that, if it is unwilling to investigate, it must state so formally so that the committee can respond in terms of its constitutional oversight mandate.

“In addition, the committee was also concerned about the department’s quarterly reporting and the pace of progress on several key performance indicators. Although some performance indicators are measured annually, we stressed that quarterly milestones are important for monitoring whether the department is on track to achieve targets.

“We flagged several areas where the department had provided no quarterly updates despite the committee’s repeated requests. This includes requests to report on the percentage of learners achieving 60% or above in Mathematics and Physical Sciences,” said Maimela.

She said to assess whether this annual target is realistic, the committee needs term-test performance data and clarity on the baseline number of learners enrolled for these subjects.

“Members also wanted to know how many learners participated in the recent bilingual Grade 4 pilot assessments, the level of preparation across centres and the extent of curriculum support for teachers,” she said.

Maimela said the committee welcomed this milestone, but members stressed that they need to understand whether the initiative was implemented equitably and adequately. She wanted to know why the number of districts monitored for foundation phase teacher training has been reduced.

“We flagged this as contradictory, as the department has issued warnings about weak reading-for-meaning outcomes and yet it decided to reduce monitoring from 40 to 27 districts.

“Monitoring is critical for identifying gaps in teacher capacity and designing appropriate interventions,” said Maimela.

By REGINALD KANYANE

26 November 2025- Sasol Banyana Banyana has officially reconvened for national team duty as they assemble for the final international window of 2025. The Senior Women’s National Team returned to camp this week with renewed energy and focus, fresh from securing qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) last month.

A group of 23 locally based players reported for camp on Monday, bringing together a strong contingent of domestic talent. However, the squad was dealt a minor setback after experienced defender Lebohang Ramalepe was released from camp due to medical reasons.

The players wasted no time settling in, completing their first training session on Monday in Boksburg. The session marked the beginning of an intensive week-long programme as the team sharpens its tactical and physical readiness ahead of their upcoming international match.

Coach Desiree Ellis’ charges are scheduled to continue preparations throughout the week before departing for Morocco on Friday, where they will finalize their work for this camp window. The squad will be further strengthened later in the week when the international duo of Linda Motlhalo and Bongeka Gamede link up with the team in Morocco.

With qualification secured, Banyana Banyana will be aiming to close out 2025 in strong fashion as they begin building toward their 2026 WAFCON campaign.

The match will be played in Agadir on 2 December at 7pm GMT+1 (20:00 SA time)
