24 October 2025- The John Taolo Gaetsewe District Police Management welcomed the conviction and sentencing of Renhard Jonkers in the Kathu Regional Court recently. On 2 November 2017, Siyathemba Police attended a complaint of murder in Chris Hani Street in Siyathemba.
The Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane said it was reported that the deceased and accused had an altercation that led to the fatal stabbing of a victim, Emial van Dyk (23). Shemane said the accused who was 18 years-old at the time of the incident was arrested immediately and appeared in court.
“On 21 October 2025, Kathu Regional Court convicted and sentenced Renhard Jonkers to eight years imprisonment, of which two years were suspended for five years,” he said.
Meanwhile, the acting John Taolo Gaetsewe District Police Commissioner, Brigadier Kenneth Baloyi, applauded Detective Warrant Officer George Miles from Kathu Detective for ensuring that the accused is convicted and incarcerated for this heinous act.
24 October 2025- The ANC said it has noted with grave concern the incidence of violence that took place on 16 October 2025 against a pupil in the Milnerton High School in Cape Town, Western Cape. The party said it has noted the contents of the video that showed pupils of the said school actively involved in this incident.
The ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu said they welcome the statements made by the Western Cape ANC Women’s League, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Basic Education and commends the school, education district and the Western Cape Provincial Department of Education for the actions that have been taken thus far. Bhengu said they are awaiting the outcome of these good efforts.
“The ANC is also aware of allegations by some learners that Milnerton High School has on several occasions not acted when incidents of bullying and racism were reported to relevant authorities. These allegations deserve to be investigated by neutral parties and acted upon by the school management, if found to be true.
“The ANC condemns all forms of violence. In the same breath, it condemns incidents of violence in schools and subsequent demonstrations that disrupt learning and compromise the atmosphere where the doors of learning are open to all,” she said.
Bhengu further said it is unacceptable for anyone to dismiss these incidents or to accept them as bad behaviour that reflects the moral decadence of society today. She added that every community, society or state has a duty to constantly improve itself to become the best.
“The ANC call upon all stakeholders in education, firstly to parents and family members to play their part in the cultivation of a culture of respect and discipline amongst their children, as the family is the most important unit that instils good values into these youth and learners and secondly to the learners, teachers, school governing bodies and all other stakeholders such as teacher unions, to play their part in contributing to the cultivation of a culture where respect, good conduct, punctuality, diligence and maintenance of law and order in schools and educational institutions becomes the norm.
“The ANC calls for a thorough investigation of this incident of violence against a learner, which happened at the Milnerton High School in Cape Town on 16 October 2025. The ANC also calls upon all stakeholders in education to work together to find sustainable solutions that will assist all schools, education districts, provincial departments of education to put in place a simple and effective system that will restore discipline, respect and law and order in schools permanently in schools across the length and breadth of our country, South Africa,” said Bhengu.

23 October 2025- The Vryburg Regional Court has sentenced Osvaldo Julia Cumbane (32), a Mozambican national, to an effective 25 years’ imprisonment following his conviction on multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit an offence, murder, attempted murder, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping, two counts of pointing a firearm, and possession of ammunition.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson in the North West, Sivenathi Gunya said the court heard that on 2 May 2022, Cumbane left Welkom in the Free State, where he was residing, and travelled with a group of men to Ganyesa in the North West. Gunya said upon their arrival, they conspired to commit a robbery.
“The police investigations led by the Warrant Officer Calvin Koope from the Mahikeng Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit (Hawks), revealed that on 4 May 2022, the group proceeded to Tlaakgameng Trading Store to execute their plan to rob a Fidelity Security Services cash-in-transit vehicle.
“When the vehicle arrived at the store, the robbers ambushed the guards. During the robbery, gunfire was exchanged, and one of the security officers, Lebogang Leager Kakgola, was shot. He was rushed to a nearby clinic, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Following intensive investigations, Cumbane was arrested on 15 January 2024,” he said.
Gunya said he was denied bail and remained in custody throughout the trial. He said during proceedings, Cumbane pleaded guilty to all charges in terms of a plea and sentence agreement with the state.
“Advocate Ayanda Mzamo told the court that the accused was driven by greed when he planned to rob the cash-in-transit vehicle, an act that resulted in the senseless loss of an innocent life performing his duties. The court sentenced Cumbane seven years imprisonment for conspiracy to commit an offence, 25 years’ imprisonment for murder, 7 years imprisonment for attempted murder and 15 years imprisonment for two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
“He was also sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for kidnapping, 15 years imprisonment for two counts of pointing a firearm and 7 years imprisonment for possession of ammunition. In accordance with Section 280 of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977, some sentences will run concurrently, resulting in an effective 25 year term of imprisonment,” said Gunya.
Welcoming the sentence, Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr Rachel Makhari, commended both the prosecution and the investigative teams for their diligence and dedication. Makhari reaffirmed the NPA’s commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring justice for victims and their families.
23 October 2025- The Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting in Mmabatho has sentenced Tsakani Rhulani Hlongwane (37) to a R10 000 fine or 12 months imprisonment, wholly suspended for three years on condition that she is not convicted of theft during the period of suspension. Investigations revealed that on 15 May 2024, the Office of the Premier in the North West Province issued a request for quotation (RFQ) to five potential suppliers registered on the Central Supplier Database.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson in North West, Sivenathi Gunya said Hlongwane, the sole director of Goiutsemedi Trading Enterprise, was not among the companies invited to submit quotations and did not submit one. Gunya said the selection process was finalised by the department’s Supply Chain Management (SCM) unit on 24 May 2024.
“However, on 30 May 2024, a purchase order was erroneously generated in favour of Hlongwane’s company instead of Goitsemedi Trading and Projects, which had been appointed to supply protective clothing. Despite not being awarded the contract, Hlongwane’s company received the purchase order, delivered goods as per the order and submitted an invoice to SCM for payment.
“The department subsequently paid R109 636.20 to Goiutsemedi Trading Enterprise in error. When notified of the mistake, Hlongwane indicated that she had already spent the money. She was arrested on 18 August 2025, and later released on bail,” he said.
Gunya further said in court, Hlongwane pleaded guilty to the charge of theft. He added that by the time of sentencing, she had repaid R63 000 to the department.
“In aggravation of sentence, senior state advocate Theo Moetaesi argued that the accused acted knowingly and unlawfully when she used funds she knew did not belong to her.
“Welcoming the outcome, Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr Rachel Makhari, commended the prosecution team for their work in bringing the matter to a finality. She reaffirmed the NPA’s commitment to combating commercial crimes and ensuring accountability in public sector transactions,” said Gunya.

23 October 2025- The North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi expressed satisfaction with the third day of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) final examinations, commencing with the learners writing English Paper 3. Motsumi today went to motivate learners and monitor examinations at MpheBana Secondary in Koster, where 189 matric candidates sat for examination.
Following the examination monitoring, Motsumi called a meeting with the School Management Team (SMT) and School Governing Body (SGB) to deliberate on the proposed strategy for the incubation of all candidates. She further said the incubation process is arranged to start on 26 October 2025.
“During this examination period, the North West will station subject advisors to assist the school with the incubation programme to support all candidates, as they have consistently performed below 80% throughout the year.
“The school must work closely with the parents during the incubation camp for teachers to be able to concentrate on the curriculum. The incubation camp will allow teachers to give more time to curriculum delivery, while parents partner with the school to foster a conducive environment for learners,” said Motsumi.
She added that they remain committed to supporting every candidate and will continue to monitor examination processes until the last paper is written. Motsumi said candidates are scheduled to write a three-hour examination, Afrikaans Paper 3 on 24 October 2025.
