SCOPA to Hold PFMA Public Hearings with Arts and Culture, Social Development and Health Departments Over 2024/25 Audit Outcomes

13 October 2025- The North West Provincial Legislature Standing Committee on Provincial Public Accounts will hold Public Finance Management Act public hearings with the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation, Department of Social Development and Department of Health over the 2024/25 audit outcomes and to seek clarity from responses on questions emanating from the Auditor General’s reports. 

The Chairperson of SCOPA, Smuts Matshe said PFMA public hearings are scheduled to take place at Legislature Auditorium on Tuesday. Matshe said between 11h00 – 13h30, they will engage the North West Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation.

“From 2pm to 4pm, we will engage the North West Department of Social Development, while the North West Department of Health will be engaged between 4pm and 6pm.  

“The North West MEC for the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation, Virginia Tlhapi, Department of Social Development, Basetsana Dantjie and Department of Health, Sello Lehari and senior management of the departments are expected to attend the public hearings,” he said.

Four bogus Hawks members nabbed

13 October 2025- Four men briefly appeared before the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court facing multiple charges, including kidnapping, fraud, robbery with aggravating circumstances, impersonating a police official, unlawful possession of an automatic firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

It is alleged that on 10 October 2025, at approximately 10am, the accused who were wearing Hawks T-shirts, stopped a vehicle in which the victim (42), was travelling. They allegedly pointed a rifle, forced him out of his vehicle, handcuffed him, covered his head with a T-shirt, and drove off with him in a white Golf GTI.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson in Gauteng,

Lumka Mahanjana said while driving along the R80 highway, members of the Tshwane Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU) noticed the suspicious-looking Golf GTI with four occupants and the victim. Mahanjana said upon inspection, the officers discovered that the registration number on the Golf belonged to a different vehicle.

“A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, several rounds of live ammunition, dashboard blue lights, cable ties, a vehicle siren, and T-shirts with police emblems.

“The police immediately arrested all four suspects and rescued the victim. The matter was postponed to 20 October 2025, for bail information,” said Mahanjana.

Committee to be briefed by AGSA on 2024/25 audit outcomes

13 October 2025 – The Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies will on Tuesday, be briefed by the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) on the 2024/25 audit outcomes of the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) and its entities, as well as the Government Communications and Information System (GCIS) and Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA).

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies, Khusela Diko said they will be briefed on the annual reports and financial statements in the year under review by the DCDT, South African Broadcasting Corporation, Sentech, Broadband Infraco, State Information Technology Agency, and Universal Services Access Agency of South Africa together with the Universal Services Access Fund.

Diko said the meeting will take place on Virtual platform (Link will be shared before the meeting starts) on Tuesday at 9am until 5pm.

‘A body of a woman discovered in a pool of blood’

13 October 2025 – A body of a woman (44) was found in a pool of blood by the police in Galeshewe Township, near Kimberley. The police said the body of Mmasabata Anastacia Monareng was found lying in a pool of blood at Patosi Street, Galeshewe Township, near Kimberley on 8 November 2022.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Timothy Sam said Monareng was found with extensive injuries on her body that resulted in her being transported to the Robert Mangaliso Hospital for medical attention, where she succumbed to her injuries. Sam said the police request the assistance of the public in solving this case and request anyone with information to contact the Galeshewe SAPS or contact Detective Sergeant Chrisna von Wielliegh at 082 469 0547 or the SAPS Crime Stop line 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS App.

“All information received will be treated confidentially,” he said.

Zimbabwean couple nabbed for operating illegal pharmacy

13 October 2025- The alleged Contravention of Sections of Medicine control Act case against Zimbabwean couple, Takundn Maturure (34) and Lydia Mapepeta (34), was postponed to 21 October 2025, by the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court for formal bail application. This comes after they were arrested for allegedly operating an illegal pharmacy and dispensed medicine without any qualifications.

The Hawks spokesperson in Northern Cape, Lieutenant Colonel Tebogo Thebe said Kimberley Public Order Police (POP) received a tip-off regarding suspicious activities taking place in Galeshewe Township, near Kimberley. Thebe said upon their arrival after assessing the scene, they summoned Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation’s Serious Organised Crime Investigations standby team.

“The police discovered a large consignment of medicine (tablets and bottled mixtures) as well as cash amounting to just below R160 000. The consignment included 114 bottles of Painogon syrup, 100 bottles of Stilpaine syrup, 100 bottles of Broncleer syrup, 30 bottles of lenazineforte syrup, 431 of mylon tablets.

“Each bottle was being sold for R60. The team felt a very strong smell of high-grade dagga coming from another room in the same yard prompting a search, a large quantity of  dagga contained in black plastic bags estimated to be worth at least R90 000 was discovered and seized for further investigation,” he said.

Thebe further said the police could not link the dagga to anyone as no one was found in the room, but the investigation on linkage is continuing.
